Do You Need Mold Release for RTV Silicone? | RUUIPON
Release belongs on the master when we pour the tool, and sometimes on craft dumps. Do not grease a food-contact RTV cavity. Named resin exceptions.

You need mold release in two different places, and mixing them is how food trays fail. On the master: a compatible barrier or release is often what lets platinum RTV leave an SLA, a porous plaster pattern, or a previous silicone face without inhibition or mechanical lock. On the working cavity: a dry platinum food-contact well should dump chocolate or pectin without grease. Craft resin, PU, and some waxes are a different conversation — named release, not kitchen spray. RUUIPON, Bao'an since 2018. We will not spec oil on a food well. MOQ 20 per design. Release coatings on a steel LSR *part* tool are a WYD topic: wydsilicone.com. Don't copy a press-release SOP onto a 20A gummy sheet.
Does not apply when the dump is supposed to stay tacky (ganache fill), when you are bonding silicone to a substrate (primer, not release), or when the face is already chemically tacky from inhibition — more spray will not cure that skin.
Master: where release actually belongs
When we pour A/B against a pattern, the risk is platinum sticking to the pattern or inhibiting on it.
- Sealed SLA / DLP: wash, UV, barrier coat; then rubber. Release may sit *on* that sealer, not on raw photopolymer.
- Porous plaster, wood, print powder: sealer first, then a release the sealer can live with. Skip sealer and the rubber drinks the pore.
- Silicone on silicone (glove over a silicone master, or a second pour): inhibition and mechanical lock. A dedicated inter-coat or a tin/platinum pairing conversation — we would not guess from a TikTok petroleum-jelly demo.
- Sulfur clay, latex, tin leftovers: those are inhibitors. Release is not an antidote. Change the master.
Symptom after our pour: cavity face greasy/undercured, jacket back fine. Cause: inhibition, not "needs more release next time." Confirm: string test on the print side only. Fix: remake from a sealed master. Don't ship a food skin that never cured.
Mix is 1:1 or 10:1 by weight. Vacuum still happens. Release does not replace degas.

Cavity: food vs craft dumps
Food-contact (chocolate, gummy, ice, baking trays we build as tools). We would not grease, butter, or aerosol-cook a food well. Temper contraction, dry matte face, and geometry do the release. Oil fights the next wash, the document pack, and the gloss you thought you bought.
Craft resin / PU. Some systems stick to platinum. Then a *named* release the resin vendor lists, used as little as will still dump, and never shared with a food rag. If you need release every pour, also look at draft, Shore, and RUUIPON Mold Structure Decision: a missing split will feel like a "release problem" forever. Flat back → open-back. Undercuts that will not peel → two-part / plug / core. Large wet dump → mother mold.
Soap / wax. Fragrance oils already wet the face. Extra release is usually more film. If a soap loaf locks, check undercuts and jacket, not PAM.
Tin-cure craft tools. Tin can dump easier on a dirty master and still be the wrong food start. We would not spec tin plus heavy release as a food workaround.

ISO 3302-1 M2 is a rubber class, not a license to coat the well.

Worked example (anonymized)
A 10-cavity couverture bar, platinum ~25A. First witness released. Production kitchen sprayed a "food-safe" aerosol after a sticky weekend (temper was off). Next week: streaks, film, dishwasher wouldn't clear it. They asked for a coated recast. We had them dump an unoiled spare from the same PO with a verified temper — released. Recast of the sprayed skins for cosmetics, no Shore change, no $50 CAD. Traveler now says no oil. Tooling charge did not include a release coating we refused to add.
One procurement mix-up
"Silicone is non-stick so I never need release" and "I always need release" are both incomplete. Masters often need a barrier. Food cavities should not be greased. Resin may. Write the dump. A marketplace "mold release for silicone" can be the wrong chemistry for platinum food and the wrong solvent load for a clear craft tool.

FAQ
Do I spray the silicone mold before chocolate? No. Dry the face. Fix temper and moisture. Spray is a film you will fight for the rest of the SKU.
Then why did my resin figurine lock without spray? Undercut, missing split, or a sticky resin system. Name the resin; we look at structure before we look at cans.
Is PVA or acrylic sealer the same as mold release? No. Sealer closes pores on a *master*. Release is a sacrificial film. Order of operations matters; sealer first on porous patterns.
Will release help an inhibited sticky cavity? No. That skin did not cure. Scrap the food face; remake from a sealed master.
Does MOQ 20 change if I insist on a coated food tray? We would not spec that coating. MOQ 20 still applies to a standard dry-face food tool. $50 CAD is unrelated to spray.
