Low-MOQ Custom Silicone Manufacturers: Finding the Right Production Partner
A low MOQ is a setup-cost policy, not a kindness. Check compound min-buy, press cell time, cavitation, and whether LSR, HCR, or RTV is the actual process.

Treat a homepage MOQ of 50 as a setup-fee policy. Shop the math that produced it.
Custom silicone factories do not enjoy small lots. They accept them when the cell, the compound, and the tool can be staged without wrecking the week. “Low MOQ” is the policy that falls out of that math. Shop for the math, not for the smallest number on a homepage.
What MOQ is covering
A minimum order is the factory’s way of not running a press for an hour of parts after three hours of changeover.
Typical covers, in the order they actually bite:
Compound minimum. LSR pails, HCR mill lots, color masterbatch, and platinum catalyst systems come in vendor pack sizes. If your 50 parts use 200 g and the pail is 20 kg, someone owns 19.8 kg of leftover. A “low MOQ” shop either (a) already stocks that grade, (b) charges you the rest of the pail, (c) runs a shared grade you did not specify, or (d) hides the leftover in a high unit price. Ask which.
Press and oven setup. Heat the tool, purge the last grade, set vacuum, map first offs, then post-cure a tiny load in an oven sized for production racks. The oven is often the joke: a 50-piece post-cure still occupies a recipe and a slot.
Quality release. First-article discipline does not scale down as fast as you want. A drawing, a hardness check, a visual standard, a material cert: that packet is similar at 50 and at 5,000. A shop that skips it to hit your MOQ is not cheaper. You are the incoming inspection department.
Tool ownership and storage. A 1-cavity aluminum tool for 50 parts a year is a storage fee with a birthday. Confirm who stores it, how it is oiled, and whether “MOQ 50” assumes the tool stays in *their* rack.

Process first, MOQ second
Low MOQ means different physics in each process. Mixing them is how buyers get a sample they cannot produce.
RTV vacuum casting (tin or platinum room-temp rubber, poured parts). Naturally low quantity. Labor-heavy. Dimensional scatter is a craft variable. Fine for form and some fit. A bad predictor of LSR flash and heat-shrink.
LSR injection, soft tool. Real compound, real heat, real flash behavior. MOQ is limited by pail size, tryout shots, and whether the shop will dirty a press for you. This is the low-volume path that still teaches production.
LSR injection, steel, multi-cavity. High MOQ is rational. You do not want this partner for 80 pieces unless they have a dedicated sample cell.
HCR compression / transfer. Can do low lots if the preform is simple and the shop already mills that hardness. Color changes and mill time will set a floor.
If a manufacturer advertises “MOQ 1” and their photos are steel 8-cavity LSR tools, you are looking at a marketing page. If they show vacuum chambers and glove molds, you are looking at RTV. Both can be competent. They are not interchangeable partners.
Signals of a shop that can actually run small
Ignore adjectives. Look for cell design.
- A sample or R&D press that is not the 300-ton production machine.
- Willingness to quote setup as a line, MOQ as a *result*, and leftover compound as a *choice* (you buy it / they stock it / you change grade).
- 1-cavity aluminum as a normal offering, not a reluctant exception.
- A stated trim method: hand, tumble, cryo, or “parting line will be too clean to need it.” If they cannot say, flash will be your labor.
- Document control that works at low qty: lot travelers, material certs, and a place to put a ballooned drawing.
Red flags that rhyme with “we do low MOQ”:
- One unit price, no setup line, no scrap assumption.
- “Any color, any hardness, MOQ 10” with no grade family named.
- Steel tool quoted as mandatory before a single LSR sample.
- No answer on who owns leftover compound.

How to compare two low-MOQ quotes
Align process, then align the hidden floor.
Ask both:
- Process (RTV / LSR / HCR) and why it matches the end-use.
- Tool type and cavity count for *this* MOQ, not for a fantasy year-two volume.
- Grade, pack size, and leftover policy.
- Setup fee vs unit price, and how they change at 3× and 10× the MOQ.
- Lead time as gates (DFM, cut, tryout, FAI), not one calendar promise.
- What happens on reorder of the same 50 if the tool is already at the shop.
The cheaper MOQ is the one where setup + leftover + scrap + freight to your real release qty is lower. A shop with MOQ 200 and a stocked medical LSR can beat a shop with MOQ 20 that special-orders a pail.
Partner, meaning the boring parts
A production partner at low volume is a shop that will still be able to run the *same* grade and the *same* tool in six months. That requires:
- The tool drawing and steel/aluminum ownership in writing.
- The compound named as a manufacturer grade, not “transparent 50A.”
- A reorder that does not restart DFM charges without a CAD change.
You do not need a factory that “specializes in startups.” You need one whose sample cell is a real cell, and whose production cell you can graduate into without recutting every insert.
Put this on the RFQ: “State MOQ as a function of setup, compound pack size, and 1-cavity run time. Split setup from piece price. Name the process and the grade. Do not quote a steel multi-cavity MOQ against a sample request.”
