Self-Lubricating Liquid Silicone Rubber: Reducing Friction in Moving Mechanical Parts

Self-lubricating LSR is platinum liquid silicone with a designed, incompatible fluid that blooms to the surface after vulcanization. The film cuts the coefficient of friction so a connector seal slides into a housing, a slit valve does not self-heal, or an O-ring turns without a secondary grease.

It is not a spray. It is not a harder grade. It is not an oil you stir into a 1:1 RTV cup. The fluid type, the amount, and when it reaches the surface are the compound. Bloom too soon and the steel fouls. Bloom never and you bought an expensive standard LSR. Mechanical parts care about that clock.

Bloom is a migration, timed on purpose

After the network forms, a portion of the free silicone fluid (often a phenyl-containing or other mismatched siloxane fluid) moves to the surface over hours to a day or more. Supplier literature for healthcare self-lube LSR commonly describes delayed bloom starting on a clock measured in hours after cure, not in the cavity. That delay is the difference between a clean tool and a weekend spent scrubbing plates.

What the film does:

  • Lowers sliding friction against plastic and metal
  • Reduces stick-slip on assembly robots
  • Keeps a slit in a needle-free valve from closing back up (self-heal)
  • Replaces a secondary lubrication step that is hard to dose evenly

What it does not do:

  • Turn the bulk into a bearing grade with infinite wear life
  • Stay identical after a solvent wash or a plasma treat
  • Guarantee food-contact or implant status (the fluid is part of the test article)
  • Bond well to overmolds, inks, or adhesives without a plan

Coefficient of friction is measured on a named method and a named counterface (ASTM D1894-style film friction language, or a device-specific insertion-force test). Do not print “low friction” without the mate material and the wait time after demold.

Moving parts that actually earn the grade

Needle-free / slit valves. Standard LSR wants to heal a cut. The bloomed film keeps the slit an opening. This is one of the healthcare reasons the grade family exists. Post-cure, sterilization, and extractables still belong to the device file.

Connector and harness seals. Automotive and appliance housings want a seal that slides on dry and then stays put. Grease on the line is mess and variation. Self-lube LSR is a controlled mess, later.

Stoppers, plungers, and sliding seals. Insertion force and breakaway force are the metrics. If the part is a static gasket that never moves, you are paying for oil you do not need, and you may contaminate a paint or a bond.

Consumer mechanicals. Buttons that must not squeak, lids that twist. Watch oil on cosmetics and on food-contact claims.

HCR oil-bleed compounds exist for millable parts. They are not LSR. RTV mold rubbers with added fluid are a different, usually accidental, contamination problem. Keep the families unmixed.

The tool stays the same steel. The process does not.

You can often run self-lube LSR in the same cavity as the dry twin. That is the commercial pitch. The process window still changes:

  • Fouling. If bloom is not delayed, plates go slick, vacuum cups fail, and dimensions pick up a film. Choose a delayed-bloom grade or a cleaning interval you can live with.
  • Handling. Fresh parts can look dry and then go oily in the tote overnight. Pack after the specified bloom window, or specify a dry window for inspection.
  • Painting, printing, bonding. Oil is a release. If you need adhesion, do not use self-lube, or mask, or use a dry LSR and a controlled external lube only where needed.
  • Cleanroom / optics / medical particulate. Oil holds dust. Anti-static and self-lube fight each other in spirit.
  • Food and skin. The fluid is an extractable. 21 CFR 177.2600 or a wearable file is a new test article, not the dry LSR’s paperwork.

Compression set of many self-lube LSRs is quoted as good even without post-cure, because the grades are built that way. That does not erase a post-cure your medical or volatile spec still wants. Confirm the bloom still meets the friction target after the bake you actually run.

Spec friction on the assembly, not on a slogan

Insertion force into the production housing at a stated speed and temperature is worth more than a plaque COF. Counterfaces differ: unfilled PP is not glass-filled PA, and not anodized aluminum.

Write:

  • Grade family: self-lubricating platinum LSR, delayed bloom
  • Shore A
  • Bloom window (no visible film before [t]; functional film by [t2] at [T])
  • Functional test: insertion / rotation / slit leak at [t2]
  • Forbidden secondary operations: bonding, printing, unless a qualified clean
  • Sterilization method if healthcare
  • Explicit ban on substituting dry LSR plus shop oil

Wear is a separate test. A blooming film can be wiped off in a high-cycle dry slider. If the part is a dynamic seal at high cycle, you may need geometry, a harder grade, or a true bearing design, not only more oil.

When not to buy self-lubricating LSR

Skip it when:

  • The part is bonded, overmolded as a second shot that must adhere, or inked
  • The part is an optical or dusty medical surface
  • The only “friction” problem is a sharp plastic edge; fix the edge
  • You needed conductive or self-lube and a pristine bond line
  • The product is a poured RTV mold. Oil in a mold rubber is contamination of the casting.

A thin dry-film or a metered grease can still be the right process for a low-volume metal slider. Self-lube LSR wins when the lube has to be on every shot, in the right amount, without a person with a brush.

FAQ

How does self-lubricating LSR reduce friction without greasing the mold?

A mismatched silicone fluid is mixed into the compound and migrates after the network forms. Delayed-bloom grades are designed so most of that migration happens after demold, so the cavity stays cleaner than an immediate-bleed oil.

Can I add silicone oil to standard LSR or RTV to get the same effect?

Not as a production control. Shop oil changes cure, tear, and bloom timing, and it will coat the tool immediately. Buy a formulated self-lube LSR with a stated bloom window.

Will the same steel tool run dry LSR and self-lube LSR?

Often yes, which is why the upgrade is a compound change. Plan for possible plate filming, different handling tack, and a qualification of insertion force. Do not assume bonding and printing still work.

Does blooming oil make a slit valve leak?

The oil is there to stop the slit from healing shut, not to open a leak path by itself. Seal performance is still geometry, hardness, and compression. Qualify leak and opening force after the bloom window and after sterilization if the device is sterile.

Is self-lubricating LSR automatically biocompatible or food-contact?

No. The fluid is part of the finished article. Use supplier biological or food-contact data on that exact self-lube grade, then let the device owner complete ISO 10993 or 21 CFR 177.2600 work on the real part. Dry-grade files do not cover it.
