If you're trying to keep a custom RTV silicone mold alive, you're managing tear, swelling, UV, and jacket warp — not a steel shot count copied from SPI class language. Platinum and tin cavities die from nicks at splits and logos, the wrong cleaner, sun on a windowsill, compression set under stacked jackets, and inhibition on a dirty pour.

Unmix the object. This is the flexible cavity you dump gummy, chocolate, wax, or resin into: master, mold box, RTV A/B, keys, inner core, mother mold. If the PDF is full of heaters, cold-runners, and shutoff lands, that's a different RFQ for a molded silicone *part*, not this RTV mold.

Match rubber and jacket to the duty

Life starts at the RFQ. A Shore 10A skin with no jacket against a hot pectin dump will balloon and tear at the lettering even if the platinum grade is “high tear” on the TDS. Name the duty with the shop:

  • Platinum addition-cure when you need the cavity to hold size in storage and to recast next season against the same master.
  • Tin condensation-cure when the master is dirty or sulfur-bearing and the run is short. Don't store tin as a library tool.
  • Jacket material (plaster, resin, fiberglass, or a printed shell) matched to pour head and dump temperature.
  • Split count and keys (pips, bushes, CNC bosses) that still register after heat cycles.

Coatings and food-release films, if you use them, are named extras with a recoat plan. They don't replace a jacket on a floppy cavity, and they need a chemistry the food or resin dump can stand.

Don't specify a production platinum skin and then store it like a disposable tin glove. You'll pay for stability you throw away.

Stop tears from becoming the process

Tears start at sharp letters, un-drafted bails, dry splits, and aggressive demold. Over-stretching a high-undercut chocolate on every dump grows a nick into a logo failure. If you're running production dumps, the shop rules that actually add cycles are pretty mundane:

  • Dust or a named food-safe release only if the PO allows it; random kitchen oil is a swelling event.
  • Demold along the designed pull path, especially on inner cores for hollow pours.
  • Inspect keys and logo faces on a cadence, not after a rejected lot.
  • Recast the RTV skin while the master and jacket still register. Waiting until the split no longer shuts is how you buy a new master.

Multi-cavity trays often fail one pocket first. Running the rest while one cavity is torn trains the dump into a mixed bag.

Gummy tables and chocolate wheels are hot relative to a room-temperature pour. Thermal cycling plus sugar, pectin, or cocoa butter is the duty. Platinum RTV poisons against sulfur, some tin-cure residues, certain latex gloves, amines, and a long list of 3D-print and UV-resin leftovers on the master. A sticky face is chemistry; more oven time won't un-poison it.

Common mix-up: treating SPI class as a dump warranty

A lot of RFQs treat SPI/SPMA 101–105 language (or a TDS tear number) as how many dumps you'll get. In the shop that usually means you're scoring steel construction intent against a rubber glove. RTV doesn't have a shutoff land in the steel sense. Easy food grades, a rigid jacket, and an honest recast clause will outrun any warranty sentence; abrasive sugar, stacked storage, and a dirty SLA master will miss it.

If you later need thousands of molded silicone *parts* instead of a casting cavity, that's a new RFQ: HCR compression or LSR injection with a cold-runner, new shrink, new steel. Keep that quote on a separate line.

What to ask when you're buying

Before you lock the PO:

  • Platinum or tin, and is a recast of the skin included after wear or a logo change?
  • What's the Shore of the cavity, and is there a rigid jacket behind it?
  • Who stores the master, and are we allowed to sand it “to clean it up”?
  • What cleaner is written on the traveler for food or gummy soils?
  • Where will the mold live between seasons — cool, dark, unstressed, away from sulfur?
  • If one cavity of a 24-pocket tray tears, do we recast that skin or run mixed bags?

If the quote only says “long-life silicone mold” and a price, you haven't bought a life program.

Storage, recast triggers, and a worked example

UV, stacked weight, and ozone kill more RTV tools than the last thousand dumps. A cavity left in a sunlit window, or stacked so jackets warp, comes back with a drifted split and a set face. Store cool, dark, unstressed; nest jackets so they don't creep. Skip the steel-tool oil ritual — oil is contamination, not rust preventive — and keep the mold away from sulfur (some cardboard, rubber bands, curing HCR in the same room). Put pour date, RTV lot, last recast, and who may pull the master on a traveler. A mold without a history is a mold someone will fold in half “to save space.”

Write recast triggers before the tool is desperate: tear reaching a logo or a key, sticky inhibition patches, jacket warp that shows as a tapered dump, tin-cure size drift past the drawing, or a dump temperature that now cooks the skin. When a trigger hits, recast against the same master, with the same keys and jacket, provided the master still exists and hasn't been sanded. A replacement RTV cavity is a recast, not a new steel tool. High-dump gummy programs should price that recast in the original PO.

If the dump compound changed to a hotter or more aggressive recipe after the first season, the original life intent is void. Recast against the new duty, or change the skin grade.

Worked example. A 24-cavity bear tray, 22 mm cavity height, food-contact platinum skin and a fiberglass jacket, ran a few thousand dumps a month on a depositing line. Life got better when the shop stopped stacking jackets in a warm packing room, switched from an abrasive sink powder to a written food-safe cleaner, and recast two torn cavities from the still-registered master instead of running 22 good pockets and two bald ones. The master stayed in the buyer's custody; the shop kept a scan for the next recast only because the PO said so.

Tear, swell, stick: confirm then recast

When a life program is the wrong buy

If you needed thousands of molded silicone *parts*, recasting RTV skins won't get you there — that's HCR compression or LSR with a cold-runner on a parts OEM. A disposable tin glove for ten resin casts also doesn't want a PM traveler. Geometry can override quantity: a deep undercut chocolate will tear a 50A skin that a shallow muffin tray would outlive.

We would not recommend scoring an RTV glove against SPI/SPMA 101–105 language, or oiling the cavity the way you oil a steel plate. We would not stack jackets in a warm packing room, and we would not keep dumping a 24-pocket tray with two torn cavities “until the week is done.” Raising Shore A first is usually the wrong life fix; match Shore to the pull path, add the jacket, and recast while the master still registers.

FAQ

Do TDS tear-strength numbers predict how many dumps I'll get? They're a grade comparison, not a cycle warranty. Sharp letters, hot pectin, dry splits, and stacked storage will miss any published tear figure. Easy dumps, a jacket, and a recast clause can exceed it. Buy the chemistry, then maintain the face.

Will a harder Shore A double mold life? A harder skin can resist some nick growth and some slump, and it can also tear at undercuts that a 10A–20A skin would stretch around. Match Shore to the pull path and the jacket, then prove it on a first-article dump. Treat hardness as a named choice, not a life multiplier you can quote.

Should I oil the cavity the way I oil a steel tool? Usually no. Oil is a swelling and food-contact problem, and it isn't how RTV is stored. Keep the face clean of cure poisons, store it unstressed, and retire tin-cure tools when dimensions drift.

How often should I recast a production gummy mold? On a cadence tied to tear, key fit, and dump temperature, not to a brochure number. Start with an inspection after the first production week, then stretch only if logos and keys stay intact. Abrasive sugar and hot tables need a shorter look. The traveler should show the last actual inspection.

Is a platinum RTV mold maintained the same way as an LSR steel tool? No. RTV dies from tear, swelling, inhibition, and compression set, not from shutoff-land wear. Keep it clean of cure poisons, store it unstressed, and recast when the skin is done. You don't flush water circuits that don't exist.
