Most mold quotes I review start with shape and cavity count. Shore A gets mentioned last - or not at all. That is backwards. Hardness decides whether your logo stays sharp on cycle 200, whether a candle pulls without tearing the wall, and whether soap sticks in the corners after a hot cure.

What Shore A Means on a Production Mold

Shore A is a durometer scale for soft elastomers. Higher number = firmer silicone. Lower number = more flex.

On molds, that flex is your demolding tool. Too soft and cavities distort under pour weight or lose logo edges. Too firm and deep undercuts fight you every pull - tear risk goes up, cycle time goes up.

Ranges we actually build for custom work:

  • Shore A 10-20 - very soft; deep undercuts, soft soap, fragile masters that need gentle release
  • Shore A 20-30 - soft production default for candles, soap bars, complex resin pulls
  • Shore A 30-40 - mid-firm; chocolate trays, gummy sheets, flatter resin pieces with logos
  • Shore A 40-50 - firm; flat food trays, high logo fidelity, less flex needed
  • Shore A 50+ - uncommon for flexible silicone molds; only when the part is nearly draft-free and you want a rigid pour surface

The Buyer Problem Shore A Fixes

Stock molds force one hardness onto every material. You buy a marketplace tray for chocolate, then pour soy wax. The cavity may demold - or it may fight the heat cycle and stretch. Your logo looks soft. You blame the wax formula. Half the time it is the Shore A.

Buyers come to custom when:

  • Logo or micro-text must stay crisp at retail photography distance
  • Deep undercuts tear soft stock molds after 30-80 pulls
  • Hot wax (soy/paraffin around 60-80°C pour) softens a too-soft cavity and rounds edges
  • Soap sticks in sharp corners because the wall cannot flex enough locally
  • You need 50+ identical cavities - not one lucky Amazon tray

How Hardness Shows Up: Demold, Logo, Heat, Soap

Demolding

Softer silicone (Shore A 20-30) peels around undercuts. Firm silicone (Shore A 40-50) needs cleaner draft - typically 1-3° on vertical walls, more on deep bosses. If your CAD has 0° walls and a 12 mm undercut, do not specify Shore A 45 just because you like sharp logos. You will tear cavities.

Logo fidelity

Raised or recessed logos under 0.4 mm stroke width want firmer silicone - usually Shore A 35-45 - so the edge does not smear under pour pressure. Soft Shore A 15-20 will copy the logo on day one and blur it as the cavity fatigues.

Wax heat

Candle pours heat the cavity. Soft compounds flex more when warm. For tall pillars and textured walls we often hold Shore A 25-35 with wall thickness 3-5 mm so the mold keeps shape but still opens. See custom candle molds.

Soap release

Cold-process soap likes flex. Hot-process and high-stearic bars need enough firmness to hold geometry but enough give to break vacuum in corners. Most soap trays we ship land Shore A 20-30. Details: custom soap molds.

Geometry Rules That Override Your Preferred Shore A

Hardness is not free. Geometry wins arguments in review meetings.

  • Wall thickness: production cavities usually 2.5-5 mm. Under 2 mm at Shore A 40+ tears early.
  • Draft: aim 1-3° on walls taller than 15 mm. Zero-draft deep pockets need softer silicone or a two-part mold.
  • Undercuts: under 1 mm soft undercut can live at Shore A 30. Deep hooks want Shore A 20-25 or a split tool.
  • Cavity count: 6-12 cavity trays for small brands; 24+ for food sheets. Dense trays want enough firmness so the sheet does not flop during pour - often Shore A 30-40 for chocolate/gummy sheets.
  • Revision cycles: first sample usually settles Shore A. Budget 1-2 hardness tweaks if your material is sticky or heat-heavy. Most jobs lock after one prototype revision.

There is no single best number. Most custom production molds land Shore A 20-40. Match hardness to undercuts, heat, and logo needs - not a blog average.

Is softer always better for demolding?
No. Softer helps undercuts. It hurts logo sharpness and heat stability. Over-soft molds also flop on multi-cavity sheets.

Can I change Shore A after the first sample?
