Silicone vs Urethane Molds: Which Tool for Brand Short Runs?
Silicone vs urethane molds for Shopify and maker brands — demold, detail, heat, food path, MOQ 50 soft tooling when silicone wins. Decision table from RUUIPON Shenzhen.

On this page
A resin brand asked for “the harder mold” after a soft tray tore on undercuts. They meant urethane tooling. What they needed was a better Shore A and draft on platinum silicone — not a different polymer family. Wrong fork wastes a prototype week.
RUUIPON quotes custom silicone soft tooling for brands at MOQ 50, prototype usually 3–7 days after CAD lock. This page is only the silicone vs urethane decision for short brand runs — not a plant steel lecture.
The Buyer Fork
Silicone (RTV platinum trays) flexes for demold, copies fine logos, and supports food-contact grades when you name the market. Urethane molds (or urethane casting as the part) sit in a different workflow: harder shells, different release chemistry, often not the food path brands need for chocolate.
Do not confuse “cast urethane parts in silicone” with “urethane as the mold.” We make silicone molds. If your RFQ says urethane, say whether you mean the mold or the cast.
Decision Table
| Need | Silicone soft tray | Urethane mold path |
|---|---|---|
| Deep undercuts / flex peel | Usually better | Often needs splits or force |
| Fine logo emboss 0.3–0.6 mm | Strong with right Shore | Possible; release film common |
| Food / FDA-LFGB retail | Platinum food path on request | Usually wrong default |
| Hot wax / temper cycles | Matched Shore + grade | Check heat limits carefully |
| Very rigid multi-cavity sheet | Firmer Shore A band | Hard shells possible |
| MOQ 50 brand test | RUUIPON default | Different quote structure |
When Silicone Wins
- Resin coasters, jewelry blanks, chocolate, gummy, candle, soap short runs
- You need peel demold without destroying letter islands
- You may need FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 or LFGB sections 30/31 docs later
- You want prototype in days, then MOQ 50 — resin guide, Shore guide
When Urethane Still Fits
- Industrial non-food parts where a hard mold shell is specified by your engineer
- You are casting urethane parts into silicone — that is still a silicone mold RFQ
- Someone already locked urethane mold CapEx and only needs production parts elsewhere
If urethane is only “because soft felt weak,” try Shore and wall thickness first — design mistakes.
Food and Cert Path
Retail food claims need platinum food-contact compound and market docs — not a harder hobby plastic. Craft vs food: craft vs food-grade. Buyer checklist: food-grade buyer spec.
What to Put on the RFQ
- Mold material intent: silicone (default) vs urethane mold vs urethane cast in silicone
- What you pour and peak temperature
- Logo depth (mm) and undercuts
- Target piece weight and cavity count
- Food market if any (US / EU)

FAQ
Do you sell urethane molds?
We specialize in custom silicone soft tooling. If urethane mold is mandatory, say so early — we may not be the right shop.
Is harder Shore the same as urethane?
No. Shore is silicone hardness. Urethane is a different material family.
MOQ?
50 silicone mold pieces per design after sample approval.
Not sure which fork you are on?
Send the file and what you cast. We will say silicone Shore band — or tell you urethane mold is outside our lane.
