Sulfur in some sculpting clays (and in some sulfur-vulcanized rubber leftovers on the same bench) inhibits platinum RTV. The cavity face against the clay stays greasy; the flask back snaps. Tin-cure can be more forgiving of a dirty sulfur master, which is why sculptors still reach for it — and why we still would not switch a chocolate well to tin "so the clay works." Food stays platinum on a quiet, sealed, non-sulfur master. Craft can be: barrier-coat the clay, recast the master in a sulfur-free clay or a print, or name tin on purpose. A 20 g slug tells sulfur (tack maps to the sculpted face) from latex fingerprints and from SLA wells.

RUUIPON pours platinum as the default in Bao'an, Xinhe Blvd, Shajing, since 2018. Tin is a named craft choice. Prototype is 3–7 business days after CAD lock. Production is MOQ 20 pieces per design. Does not apply when the clay is a named sulfur-free polymer clay that already slugged clean, when the tack is winter undercure (control puck also soft), or when you wanted a vulcanized jewelry pack. We would not claim a factory "FDA-approved" blessing on a sulfur-clay food pour.

Why sculptors still use sulfur clay

It takes detail, it stays put, and decades of FX shops already own it. Those shops often run tin or they seal the clay and coupon platinum. The clay is not evil. Unsealed sulfur against addition-cure platinum is.

Barrier coats: a compatible sealer *fully cured* on the clay, then a slug. Some "clear coats" stay wet in pores and become their own inhibitor. Name the sealer. Hairspray as a personality test is not a sealer.

Recast the master: scan or $50 CAD when that scope applies, print or CNC a quiet master, slug, pour platinum. That is how food and production SKUs leave a sulfur maquette behind.

Tin: named craft only. Tin shrinks differently in storage. Do not keep a platinum 0.1–0.3% number on a tin PO.

Sulfur vs SLA vs latex on the same bench

FX benches have all three. Map the tack:

  • Face-wide against the sculpture, not in UV shadows, not in fingerprints → clay/sulfur until proven else.
  • Letter counters on a print → SLA.
  • Pads and powder → latex.

Do not "fix" sulfur with more UV. Do not "fix" SLA with a tin switch on food.

ISO 3302-1 M2 is a rubber class on the dump. It is not a clay grade. CAD lock waits on a quiet master.

Wood and sulfur-clay *on the same board* is a double risk — seal both stories or remodel.

Sulfur-vulcanized rubber crumbs on the same bench are a cousin poison. A jeweler who just cut a vulcanized pack and then handles a platinum master with the same fingers can inoculate a food well without any clay in sight. New nitrile, separate tools, slug. We would not "clean the clay" and ignore the cutter.

Tooling charge is not unrestricted ownership of the CAD remodel we built to escape the maquette. Write who keeps the quiet master so the next reorder does not return to the sulfur tub.

Failure: platinum food well from a sulfur maquette

Symptom: chocolate tray from a clay sculpt, face greasy, back cured.

Cause: sulfur clay, no slug, hope pour.

Fix: retire that cavity. Remodel a quiet master (USD $50 when that CAD scope applies), slug, recast platinum food. We would not tin-substitute food.

Sulfur habits we would not recommend

We would not recommend platinum food against unsealed sulfur clay.

We would not recommend tin as a food workaround.

We would not recommend hairspray as the barrier.

We would not recommend skipping the slug because "we always use this clay."

We would not recommend keeping platinum shrink numbers on a tin craft PO.

Worked example: sulfur maquette, chocolate SKU

80 mm character, sulfur clay, buyer wanted a chocolate cavity. First platinum slug tacky on the face, PP control snap. We scanned, $50 CAD to a pour-ready master, sealed print, second slug passed, platinum 1:1 open-back. Prototype 3–7 business days after CAD lock. Production MOQ 20 of that design. The clay stayed a sculpture.

Mix-up: tin is "the same silicone, more forgiving"

Tin is a different cure. Forgiveness on a dirty master is not a food-contact argument, and it is not a reason to skip vacuum or keys. If you name tin, we will also name storage shrink so you do not keep a platinum 0.1–0.3% line on that PO. Related: platinum vs tin RTV, contact.

FAQ

Does sulfur clay inhibit platinum silicone? Often yes, unsealed. Slug a hidden land. Tack on the clay face with a snap control is the tell.

Can I use tin so I don't have to reseal? For a named craft dump, sometimes. Not for food. Tin shrink is a different number.

Will a clear coat save the maquette? If it fully cures and the slug passes. Many coats fail in pores. Remodel if the SKU is food or production.

Is the $50 CAD to copy my clay? USD $50 when that CAD scope applies — a pour-ready remodel, not unlimited sculpture cleanup.
