Why Silicone Molds Stick on Demold (And Which Fix to Try First)

A pectin gummy brand hit us after week three: every pull tore letter islands, and the tray needed two people. They had already ordered a hotter spray and dropped pot temperature. Scrap still climbed. The mold was not "bad silicone." They were fighting the wrong cause of why silicone molds stick on demold.

What Sticky Actually Looks Like

Buyers say "sticky" for four different failures. Name yours first:

  • Peel force high, cast intact - tool grips; cast survives
  • Cast tears at logos / thin webs - grip plus weak geometry
  • Matte patches or fisheyes after spray - release film problem, not Shore alone
  • Gets worse after 50-200 cycles - aging, buildup, or wrong Shore for cycle life

Five-Minute Diagnosis Order

  1. Geometry - draft under 1 degree on walls taller than ~8-15 mm? Logo wells deeper than ~0.4-0.6 mm with sharp islands?
  2. Shore A - flat chocolate tray near 45-50A fighting soft pectin? Or 20A resin figurine tool used as a flat coaster tray?
  3. Cast chemistry - pectin vs gelatin, epoxy vs polyurethane, high-fragrance wax - each loads the wall differently
  4. Surface - pinholes on gloss faces, flash lips, sugar/oil film left in cavities
  5. Release - only after 1-4 look honest. Spray is a patch, not a redesign

Shore A Mismatch

Wrong hardness is the most common sticky story we see on brand trays.

  • Sticky gummy / deep undercut resin: bias Shore A 20-30 so the wall peels without tearing letter islands
  • Flat chocolate / baking / wax trays: bias Shore A 32-42 so the sheet stays flat and edges stay crisp
  • One hardness for every SKU: usually fails - a soft figurine tool and a firm logo tray should not share one compound

Numbers and tables: Shore hardness guide. Soft is not always "easier demold" on a wide flat pour - the tray oil-cans, flash grows, and operators fight the sheet instead of the cavity.

Draft, Undercuts, Logo Wells

If peel force is high on day one with a clean platinum tool, look at geometry before chemistry:

  • Draft 1-3 degrees on vertical walls when height allows
  • Logo depth - keep brand marks in a band your cast can leave; deep sharp wells act like barbs
  • Undercuts - soft silicone forgives mild undercuts; severe ones need a peel path or a two-part tool
  • Wall thickness - webs under ~2.5-3 mm tear when sticky loads hit

Cast Chemistry vs Tool

The same tray can feel free on tempered dark chocolate and lock on pectin gummy.

  • Pectin / sticky confection: expects soft Shore + clean faces; oil spray dependency is a plant smell - brands should not live there
  • Polyurethane resin: often grips platinum harder than epoxy - release may be required even on a correct Shore
  • Fragrance-heavy wax: can leave a tack film that reads as "sticky mold" after a few cycles
  • Hot pours into soft trays: temporary grab that eases as the piece cools - do not confuse with wrong Shore

Food programs still need the right grade and docs: FDA vs LFGB. Sticky demold does not mean the certificate failed.

When Release Helps (and When It Lies)

Use release when diagnosis points to cast chemistry (especially polyurethane) or a temporary production bridge while you wait for a remake. Do not use release to hide zero draft or 0.9 mm logo barbs.

  • Over-spray causes fisheyes, matte islands, and food-face rejects
  • Changing spray brands mid-lot changes gloss and gram feel
  • If sticky returns right after a deep clean, the tool geometry or Shore is still wrong

Pits, Flash, and Dirty Faces

Porous cavity faces from skipped vacuum read as sticky and dull on gloss chocolate or resin. Fix the tool, do not sand food faces. Background: vacuum degassing.

Flash lips act like tiny undercuts - operators feel "stick" when they are fighting a burr. Care and storage matter for cycle life: lifespan and care. When scrap and tear signals say the tool is done, plan the remake: when to reorder.

Is sticky always a release problem?
No. Start with draft, Shore A, and cast chemistry. Spray is last, not first.

Can I change Shore A on a reorder without a new tool?
Treat it as a revision. Hardness change means a new tool path and usually a new prototype pour.

Why did the sample demold fine but production stick?
Sample pours often use a different formula, cooler temps, or fewer cavities. Match production chemistry on the approval pour.

Do food-grade trays allow release sprays?
Only approved food-contact releases when your market allows them. Many chocolate lines prefer dry demold from correct Shore and draft.

How fast can we test a fix?
