A seam defect usually follows:
- parting geometry;
- registration;
- closure;
- support;
- flash.
Sticking may follow:
- wax condition;
- geometry lock;
- surface contamination;
- demolding timing;
- local texture.
Diagnose the pattern before changing silicone hardness or adding more release agent.
First question: does the defect follow the seam?
If the visible line is exactly on the mold parting line, inspect the closure system.
If the rough/stuck area appears away from the seam, investigate:
- texture;
- wax;
- contamination;
- cooling;
- undercut.
This simple location check avoids unnecessary tooling changes.
Seam mismatch starts with alignment
Inspect:
- registration keys;
- parting surfaces;
- debris/wax between halves;
- FRP/support shell seating;
- clamp/band pressure;
- stretched flange;
- damaged key roots.
A clean mold can still mismatch if the outer support forces one half sideways.
Flash is a closure/load problem
Flash increases when:
- the seam is not fully closed;
- wax is very fluid;
- support pressure is uneven;
- the mold bulges;
- the parting line is damaged;
- the rubber flange is distorted.
Do not solve flash by over-clamping one small spot.
The mold should be supported evenly.
Wax sticking can be a geometry lock
Before blaming chemistry, ask:
- Is there negative draft?
- Is the texture too deep?
- Is the candle being pulled instead of the silicone being peeled away?
- Is the wax still too soft?
- Does one decorative feature catch every cycle?
If the same feature locks in the same place, redesign may be better than spray.
Cooling condition changes release
Wax contracts during cooling, but the amount and timing vary by formula.
Premature demold can cause:
- surface smearing;
- wax tearing;
- texture staying in the mold;
- distorted candle edges.
Excessively cold or brittle demold can create other damage.
Record actual demold condition in the prototype process.
Surface contamination can mimic chemical sticking
Look for:
- fragrance residue;
- cleaning chemical film;
- dust;
- release-agent buildup;
- degraded silicone surface.
Clean and compare a known good cavity before replacing the mold.
If the silicone surface becomes tacky even when empty and clean, investigate chemical exposure or material degradation.
Peel the silicone away from the candle
A common operator error is pulling the candle while the mold stays fixed.
For deep texture or undercuts:
- release the rim;
- peel silicone away from the casting;
- support fragile wax sections;
- open split sections in sequence.
This reduces local stress on both wax and mold.
When more release agent is the wrong fix
Release spray can:
- contaminate surface finish;
- create buildup;
- hide a geometry problem;
- affect paint/coating after casting;
- complicate food/cosmetic claims in other applications.
For candles, use it only as a controlled process input if needed.
Do not use it as the default answer to a locked design.
Seam line can be cosmetically hidden rather than eliminated
For full-3D sculptural candles, some seam is often unavoidable.
Good seam paths use:
- back edges;
- natural texture valleys;
- clothing folds;
- facet edges;
- underside/base zones.
The buyer should mark the hero face before tooling.
