The choice between:

  • one-piece peel;
  • controlled slit mold;
  • two-part keyed mold;
  • multi-part mold;
  • outer support shell

should be based on two independent problems:

  1. Can the candle be released?
  2. Can the filled silicone hold the correct shape?

A mold can solve the first and fail the second.

When a slit mold gives the cleanest candle

A one-piece silicone skin with a controlled slit can reduce seam visibility.

It works best when:

  • most of the candle can peel from one flexible skin;
  • only one opening is needed;
  • the slit can sit on a hidden edge;
  • the wax has enough strength at demold;
  • the slit can close consistently during pouring.

A slit is not just "cut the mold after cure."

The cut path should be planned so it does not:

  • run through the logo;
  • create a thin tear starter;
  • pass through high-pressure wax regions;
  • make reassembly inconsistent.

When a two-part mold is the safer production tool

A two-part mold is often better when:

  • undercuts occur on both sides;
  • the part is full 3D;
  • wax is fragile at demold;
  • a long slit would need excessive stretch;
  • a controlled seam is easier to trim than repeated distortion.

The mold then needs:

  • parting line;
  • registration keys;
  • closure method;
  • seam support;
  • possible pour gate/vent.

The cosmetic seam should be deliberately placed on a back edge, natural ridge or texture valley where possible.

Tall sculptural molds can bulge under hot wax

A mold can stand upright while empty and still deform when filled.

Bulging depends on:

  • height;
  • widest unsupported span;
  • silicone Shore;
  • local wall section;
  • wax fill mass;
  • pour temperature;
  • support condition.

A taller/thinner mold may need:

  • rigid sleeve;
  • tray frame;
  • printed shell;
  • FRP mother mold.

The support should hold shape while the silicone remains flexible enough to demold.

Support shell and split are separate decisions

A one-piece slit silicone skin can sit inside a two- or three-section rigid shell.

A two-part silicone mold can also sit inside a rigid sleeve.

Do not assume the silicone split and shell split must match.

The shell is designed around:

  • rigidity;
  • access;
  • handling.

The silicone split is designed around:

  • release;
  • seam;
  • tear risk.

The display face should drive seam placement

Mark:

  • front/hero face;
  • logo;
  • high-gloss face;
  • fine texture;
  • edges that can hide finishing.

Then compare candidate splits.

The best split may be slightly more complex to manufacture but save cleanup on every candle.

Prototype with full wax fill

A dry empty mold test proves only assembly.

The prototype pour should use:

  • normal wax;
  • intended fill height;
  • actual support;
  • normal cooling;
  • real demold sequence.

Inspect:

  • bulging;
  • seam flash;
  • wax leakage;
  • wick location;
  • surface detail;
  • mold strain;
  • operator effort.

Use wax shrinkage rather than fight it blindly

Wax shrinks as it cools.

That can help release in some shapes and create sink/void behavior in others.

The mold structure should not be based on one fixed "wax shrink percentage" across all formulas.

Use actual wax and cooling practice.

When the support shell becomes mandatory

Strong candidates:

  • tall soft mold;
  • large sculptural candle;
  • heavy filled mass;
  • deep undercuts requiring low Shore;
  • multi-part skin that must register precisely.

The shell is especially valuable when raising Shore enough to stop bulging would make demolding too aggressive.

Keep:

  • existing seam article = merge or narrow around seam cosmetic/flash troubleshooting.

The older generic candle guides contain repeated fixed draft/wall/Shore values and old MOQ 50 references. They should be rewritten or consolidated after GSC review.
