What 'Food-Grade Silicone Mold' Actually Means for Buyers

"Food-grade silicone" should not be treated as a color, Shore A or factory badge.

For a custom silicone mold, the useful evidence chain is:

intended use → exact silicone formulation → cure/process → pigment/additives → finished article → applicable food-contact evidence

A buyer should be able to connect the material used in the mold to the market and contact conditions the mold will actually see.

Food-contact suitability is use-specific

Before discussing documents, define:

• food type;
• contact time;
• temperature;
• repeated-use condition;
• cleaning method;
• destination market;
• pigment/color.

A silicone used for short chocolate contact is not automatically proven for a long acidic beverage immersion.

Likewise, an oven-use claim requires different evidence than a room-temperature candy tray.

"Platinum-cure" is chemistry, not automatic compliance

Platinum-cure silicone is commonly selected for food-contact applications because it is an addition-cure system and can be formulated for food-contact use.

But "platinum" alone does not prove:

• the formulation satisfies a specific regulatory requirement;
• the pigment is covered;
• the finished mold matches the tested material;
• the intended time/temperature is covered.

Do not use "platinum = FDA compliant" as a universal statement.

The exact compound and evidence matter.

United States: 21 CFR 177.2600 is a common reference

For U.S. repeated-use rubber articles, buyers commonly reference 21 CFR 177.2600, Rubber articles intended for repeated use.

The regulation covers rubber articles intended for repeated food-use conditions and specifies composition and extractive requirements.

Important procurement point:

• FDA does not issue a blanket "custom silicone mold approval."
• A supplier should describe the applicable regulation/test basis accurately.
• The buyer should confirm that the supplied formulation/article and intended use are within the evidence scope.

Use wording such as:

"Material/article tested or documented to applicable requirements of 21 CFR 177.2600"

rather than:

"FDA-approved factory."

European Union: start from the framework and GMP

For EU food-contact materials, key general legislation includes:

• Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 on materials and articles intended to come into contact with food;
• Commission Regulation (EC) No 2023/2006 on good manufacturing practice for food-contact materials/articles.

Regulation 1935/2004 requires that under normal or foreseeable use, materials do not transfer constituents to food in quantities that endanger health, cause unacceptable composition changes or impair organoleptic characteristics.

GMP requires documented quality assurance/control across manufacture.

Silicone does not have one simple EU-wide "silicone certificate" equivalent to a product registration.

Germany / LFGB buyer requests: understand BfR Recommendation XV

German and many EU buyers often use "LFGB" as shorthand in silicone RFQs.

BfR Recommendation XV addresses silicones and is commonly used as a technical reference for silicone food-contact assessment.

Important nuance:

• BfR Recommendations are not themselves binding legal standards;
• BfR describes them as scientific/technical recommendations that can support assessment of materials such as silicones;
• the actual legal framework includes EU and German law.

Do not market "LFGB" as a universal higher-tier certificate that automatically covers every EU use.

TDS, SDS and migration/test reports prove different things

TDS

Technical properties such as hardness, viscosity or mechanical data.

SDS

Handling and hazard information.

Material declaration / food-contact statement

Supplier statement relating the compound to specific requirements.

Third-party laboratory report

Shows what specific sample was tested under defined methods/conditions.

Finished-article test

Tests the actual molded article or representative finished product.

A TDS that says "food grade" is not a substitute for a report or declaration your compliance program requires.

The exact production material must match the evidence

Check:

• grade code;
• cure system;
• Shore;
• color/pigment;
• lot/batch where relevant;
• processing/post-cure requirement.

If the report is for natural/translucent silicone and production uses a different pigment package, confirm whether the evidence remains applicable.

Do not assume "same polymer family" is enough.

What a report does not prove

A test report does not automatically prove:

• every color;
• every temperature;
• every food type;
• every cleaning chemical;
• long-term immersion;
• dishwasher durability;
• dimensional performance;
• mold lifespan.

Keep regulatory suitability separate from functional durability.

What buyers should request before PO

Ask the supplier to state:

• exact material/grade;
• cure system;
• production color;
• intended regulatory basis;
• report/declaration number;
• test sample identity;
• test conditions;
• traceability method;
• whether finished-article testing is included or optional.

If your retailer/importer has a checklist, send it before material approval.
