How Buyers Choose a Custom RTV Silicone Mold Maker
Choose an RTV mold manufacturer by vacuum, master finish, and platinum-versus-tin control, not by a LIM brochure. HCR and LSR parts are a different quote.

If you're choosing a custom RTV silicone mold manufacturer, pick the process on the floor, not the photos on the website. You need a shop that can finish a master, build a box, mix platinum or tin RTV, vacuum-degas, pull, and fit a jacket. A trader with a showroom of trays can forward a PO. That isn't the same as a pour bench. A Shenzhen factory with a real vacuum chamber is a manufacturer. A pretty catalog from the same city isn't. A LIM cell video proves they might mold *parts* — that's a different WYD-style quote, not this cavity.

This is a practical evaluation list for an RTV jacket shop. It isn't a ranking, and it doesn't award "best" on adjectives.
Process capability before brochure photos
Ask which process they will run for *this* object, then ask to see that cell.
- RTV mold-making (this site): vacuum, jackets, master finishing, platinum versus tin control, keys, recast practice. Useful when the silicone is the cavity.
- LSR / LIM: pumps, mixer, injection press, hot tools, cold-runner or dump-runner practice. If they say they "pour LSR," they mean RTV or they don't know. Different RFQ for a molded *part*.
- HCR: mill, press, flash trim. Peroxide and platinum millable grades aren't interchangeable files. Different RFQ.
A shop can honestly do one or two of these well. A shop that claims all three at infinite cavity counts without naming machines is selling a brochure. Request a vacuum-chamber photo and a master-finishing bench for this product, not a drone video of a sister LIM hall.
Ask also how they store opened RTV kits. Platinum that sits open, A/B weighed in a dusty cup, and tin next to a platinum bench will all pass a photo audit and fail a first pour. Compound control is process capability. It just lives in a storeroom instead of on a press.
If your *casting* is food-contact, you want a compound path to FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 or LFGB, plus how they prevent mixed drums. Photos of white trays don't answer that. ISO 13485 is a quality-system question for medical *devices*, not a silicone grade and not a mold-making certificate.
Questions that separate a trader from a pour bench
Useful questions:
- Where does the master and jacket live after SOP, and whose name is on them?
- Who finishes the master, and is that in the same building as the pour?
- What does first article include: fill-weight or named dims, peel photos, RTV lot, jacket material?
- Can they name the grade family they intend to use, not "food grade 20A"?
- What will they refuse to substitute (explicitly: no RTV billed as LSR, no HCR for LSR, no tin RTV for platinum RTV)?
A trader answers with "our factory" and a WeChat album. A manufacturer answers with a tool number, a vacuum log, and a person who will own the recast. Video walk-throughs of *your* pour cell beat a polished tour of a sister company's warehouse.
For China-origin programs, add time-zone mechanics: who is the technical contact after 17:00 China time, in writing, not a salesperson's personal chat. Add English drawing control: revision letters, not "latest file." Add a sample of how they mark a rejected cavity. If they can't show a reject, they may not have a record system.
Samples, packs, and what certified usually means
"Certified factory" on a website isn't a certificate. Ask for the document name: ISO 9001, a test report to FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 or LFGB from a named lab, on a named grade, at a date. Then ask whether *your* color and thickness sit inside that document. A food-contact report doesn't certify a new pigment package automatically. Don't ask for a fake SGS report number; ask for the real file name and date.
First-article packs should look boring: ballooned drawing or fill-weight table, measured values, compound COC, mix ratio, cure. PPAP language is automotive; many RTV shops won't run a full PPAP. You can still ask for the subset you need (dimensional or fill-weight, material, appearance). Don't demand a 17-piece PPAP from a chocolate-tray pour if you won't read it.
Paid samples are a filter. Free samples from a catalog tray tell you they have a warehouse. Paid samples from *your* cavity tell you they can freeze a file.
Communication that survives a 12-hour offset
Put decisions in email or a shared tracker: freeze date, shrink owner, split location, open issues. Voice notes disappear. A manufacturer that only negotiates in chat will lose a revision. Require a written NCR format for stick, shorts, and sag. Require a named engineer, not a rotating "Dear customer" desk.
English CAD notes beat English marketing. If the DFM comes back as "OK, no problem" with no parting sketch, they didn't do DFM. Ask for a screenshot with the split marked. That one picture separates shops faster than a factory audit slideshow.
Red flags that aren't about price
- One quote covering RTV, HCR, and LSR as interchangeable lines.
- Cycle-life numbers with no duty, no compound, no measurement method.
- "Medical grade" as a Shore A.
- Master ownership that silently stays with the shop.
- A sample that is a catalog tray while the PO says custom.
- Refusal to name the pour town.
- A price that only works if you skip the witness dump.
- ISO 3302-1 waved as "precision" instead of a drawing class.
Price is a later column. If the process, the records, and the ownership are wrong, the cheap tool is the expensive one after the recast and the missed season.
Export paperwork is part of the same evaluation. HS classification for silicone articles often lands in headings such as 3926.90 or 4016.99 depending on the article, not on the word mold. A manufacturer who has shipped your class of goods can name the documents they actually use. A trader who has never exported a custom tool will discover the heading after your cargo is booked.
Walk the floor or walk it by live video on the cell you will use: vacuum, master bench, jacket layup. Then choose. That's how you pick a custom RTV mold manufacturer, in China or anywhere else.
Common mix-up: auditing a LIM hall for a chocolate tray
A lot of RFQs treat a hot-tool video as proof the shop can pour a food mold. In the shop that usually means you approved a parts cell and received a forwarded RTV job — or the reverse. Ask to see the vacuum chamber and a master with a barrier coat. If they only show pumps and a cold-runner, you're in the wrong building for this product.
What to ask when you're buying
- Will you pour platinum or tin RTV for this PO, and can I see the vacuum chamber?
- Who finishes and who keeps the master after payment?
- What's in the witness pack (fill-weight, peel photos, lot)?
- What will you refuse to substitute?
- Is any HCR or LSR line on this quote a separate object?
Worked example: 12-cavity chocolate bar, about 800 pours a month
A confectionery buyer needed a 12-cavity bar, 100 x 50 x 10 mm, food-contact, about 800 pours a month. The honest manufacturer named platinum RTV, showed vacuum degas, CNC or post-cured SLA master finishing, and a rigid jacket so a 10A–20A skin wouldn't balloon. A trader returned a LIM brochure and a catalog ice sheet. Same city. Different object. The cheaper PDF wasn't a manufacturer of this cavity.
When this evaluation is the wrong list
If you need vulcanized silicone *parts* (gaskets, baby-care, keypad webs), don't audit an RTV jacket shop as a LIM cell. Quote a parts OEM — different WYD-style RFQ. A catalog ice sheet that already matches the cube also doesn't need this audit. Geometry can override quantity: one deep-undercut 80 mm resin figurine still needs a real split-and-jacket shop at 20 pieces.

Should I pick the cheapest China silicone mold quote? Not until process, master ownership, witness pack, and jacket match the other bids. The cheapest number is often a different object, such as a poured sample billed as a production tool, or a LIM line billed as a tray.
How do I know if a supplier is a trader? Ask where the master is finished, where the vacuum sits, whose name is on the jacket, and what the first-article pack contains. Albums and "our factory" without a pour bench are trader language.
Do I need ISO 13485 to pour a consumer chocolate mold? Usually no. ISO 13485 is a medical-device quality system. Consumer food-contact is a compound and test path (FDA 21 CFR 177.2600, LFGB) plus hygiene discipline. Don't buy the wrong certificate.
What should I audit on a video call? The cell for your process: vacuum, master finishing, jacket layup, compound storage, and a sample of inspection records. Skip the lobby. Skip the LIM hall unless you actually need *parts*.
Can one manufacturer own both my prototype RTV mold and my LSR steel? Yes, if they actually run both and keep the files separate. Many good LSR shops don't pour RTV. Splitting vendors is cleaner than forcing a LIM cell to pretend it's a jacket shop.
