Custom Resin Coaster Mold Design: Flatness, Lips & Demold Paths

A coaster tray that bows 0.8 mm across a 90 mm cavity rocks on every table - your brand looks cheap before the epoxy even yellows. RUUIPON builds custom resin molds at MOQ 50 with prototypes in 3-7 days. This guide covers flatness, lips, and demold paths for coaster trays that sit level after 200 pours.

Quick answer: Spec coaster cavities flat within ±0.3 mm across the pour surface, lip height 3-6 mm above fill line, 2-3° draft on sidewalls, Shore A 30-35 silicone, walls 2.5-5 mm, spacing 8-20 mm. Vacuum-degassed platinum silicone (~0.1% shrink) on a rigid master keeps warp down - thin 1.5 mm floor sections curl every time.

Coaster Cavity Anatomy

Four zones define demold success: floor (pour surface), lip (dam), sidewall (draft), and base (tray underside).

  • Floor - polished or matte per brand; texture copies from master. Surface finish.
  • Lip - contains resin meniscus; too low = spills; too high = resin waste and long cure blocks.
  • Sidewall - 2-3° draft minimum; zero draft sticks on deep 8 mm pours.
  • Base - tray sits flat on bench; stiffening ribs optional on 6+ cavity sheets.

Resin-specific bubble control: bubble causes & fixes. UV vs epoxy shrink differs - UV resin vs epoxy molds.

Flatness & Warp Control

Silicone cures with ~0.1% shrink; thin floors curl toward the open face. A 100 mm floor at 2 mm thickness can bow 0.5-1.2 mm - unacceptable for coasters.

Floor silicone thicknessTypical bow after cureRecommendation
1.5 mm0.6-1.5 mmReject for coasters
2.5 mm0.3-0.8 mmSingle cavity only
3-4 mm0.1-0.4 mmProduction standard
5 mm + rib grid<0.2 mmMulti-cavity 8-12 layout
Flatness gauge check on custom resin coaster silicone mold sample
Sample approval includes feeler-gauge flatness check across pour surface - not just OD caliper.

Master must be flat - CNC aluminum or ground glass plate backing during pour. FDM masters warp unless reinforced. Master model materials.

Lip Height & Pour Volume

Lip sets max resin volume and edge appearance. Calculate fill weight before cavity layout.

Coaster ODFill depthApprox epoxy volumeMin lip height
90 mm5 mm~32 ml3 mm above fill
90 mm8 mm~51 ml4 mm above fill
100 mm6 mm~47 ml4 mm above fill
80 mm5 mm~25 ml3 mm above fill

Embedments (flowers, logos) reduce effective volume - test on prototype. Pour spout placement: pour spout & vent design.

Demold Paths & Draft

Coasters demold face-down peel or edge-lift. Both need draft and no undercut on lip inner face.

  1. Edge-lift - flex lip outward; needs Shore A 28-35 and 2° draft.
  2. Face-down push - push through open base; needs open-back tray or cut base on single cavity prototype.
  3. Split tray - rare for coasters; use only for deep embedment lips >10 mm.

Undercut on decorative rim: keep <1 mm at Shore A 30. Undercuts & draft. Release agent on epoxy systems: release agent guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Matte or gloss coaster face?
Specify on PO - master finish copies 1:1. Gloss needs polished master or glass insert.

Why does my coaster tray warp in storage?
Stack weight on thin floors - store flat, no heat above 40 °C. Storage guide.

Can I do square coasters?
Yes - radius corners ≥3 mm to avoid tear at 90° corners.

UV resin vs epoxy - same mold?
Often yes at Shore A 30-35; UV exotherm is lower - watch thin lip brittleness over 500 cycles.

MOQ for coaster trays?
MOQ 50 molded pieces per design.

Lead time?
Prototype 3-7 days; production 2-4 weeks after sample sign-off.

Custom logo embossed on floor?
0.3-0.5 mm depth max - logo detail limits.
