Can You Order a Custom Silicone Mold From Photos Only?
When photos are enough to order a custom silicone mold, when you need STEP, what measurements to send, and how volume error shows up on the first pour.

A resin buyer sent us six phone photos of a competitor piece, asked for fifty trays, and wanted production shipping in two weeks. The photos looked sharp. The piece weight was wrong by almost 18% once we modeled the real volume - logo wells that looked shallow in the photo were deep enough to hold extra resin, and the outer silhouette hid a hollow base they never mentioned. That is the photo-only briefing problem: you can start from images, but you cannot treat images as a finished tool brief.
You can order a custom silicone mold from photos. Plenty of first jobs at RUUIPON start that way. The decision is not "photos vs nothing." It is whether photos plus measurements are enough to hold your piece weight, or whether you need STEP before you lock MOQ 50.
The Photo Brief Trap
Photos compress depth. A cavity that reads as a soft scoop on a phone screen can be 1.5-2.5 mm deeper once you caliper the physical part. Perspective also warps length - a coin in frame helps, a coin held at an angle does not. Buyers who skip scale references force the shop to invent a size, then argue about weight after the sample pour.
We see the same pattern on chocolate and gummy briefs: marketing sends beauty shots, purchasing wants a unit price, and nobody writes target grams. The tray arrives looking "right" and the depositor or tempering line misses the dose. If you are building branded trays for custom silicone chocolate molds or gummy work, photos are a start - not a closed RFQ.
Another failure mode is mixing reference photos from three different products. One shot shows the logo face, another shows a competitor tray density, a third shows packaging art. Without a written hierarchy - "master geometry from photo A, logo from photo B, ignore cavity count in photo C" - the CAD rebuild becomes a collage. Collages fail weight checks.
When Photos Work
Photo-led jobs succeed when the shape is simple, the buyer owns a physical master you can measure, or the brand accepts a reconstruction pass before production. Typical cases:
- Flat or shallow cavities under about 12 mm deep with clear top-view and side-view shots
- Existing hard master you can ship or caliper yourself (length, width, height, logo depth)
- Repeat of a prior RUUIPON tool where you only need a small logo or wall tweak
- Prototype first - you want one tray in 3-7 days after we rebuild CAD from photos, then decide on production
In those cases we rebuild a solid in CAD from your images, send you a dimensioned preview, and you approve numbers before we cut a master. That approval email is the real brief. Photos got you into the queue; dimensions lock the cavity.
If you are still shaping the RFQ language, steal fields from the custom silicone mold RFQ template and paste gram targets next to every photo set. A complete photo pack plus that template usually gets a first reply within about 24 hours.
When You Need STEP
Send STEP (or a clean solid export) when any of these are true:
- Undercuts, stacked logos, or deep lettering where photo depth is guesswork
- Piece weight tolerance tighter than about +/-5% of target grams
- Multi-cavity layouts where cavity-to-cavity match matters for depositor timing
- Retail packaging already printed with a net weight claim
- Matching an injection-molded plastic part or CNC metal master already in production
STEP removes the reconstruction gamble. We still ask for Shore A band, demold method, and food-contact market, but we are not inventing the solid. For dense sheets, cavity count advice still follows output math - see how many cavities your silicone mold actually needs - photos alone never answer that question.
STL can work if the mesh is clean and manifold. A noisy scan mesh with holes forces us back into the same guesswork as photos. If your "CAD" is a pretty render PNG, treat it as a photo and send measurements.
Measurements to Send With Photos
If you must brief from photos, send this list in the same email as the images:
- Overall length, width, and height of the finished piece (mm), measured with a caliper if you have a master
- Target finished weight in grams and the tolerance you will accept on the sample pour
- Logo or emboss depth - for chocolate and gummy we usually keep emboss in the 0.3-0.6 mm band unless you specify deeper branding
- Wall intent - solid pour vs shell; shell wall thickness if known
- Edge margin plan for the tray - most small shapes want 8-20 mm between cavity edge and tray edge
- Shore A preference - soft flex demold often sits in the lower-mid band; stiffer trays for hot pours sit higher; say a band, not "whatever"
- One photo with a ruler flat on the table next to the piece, camera square to the top face
- One side photo with the ruler vertical against the tallest feature
Missing grams is the most expensive blank field. Silhouette without weight is how you get a pretty tray that doses wrong. If you only know packaging claim weight, say so - we will design to that claim and you will verify on the sample pour with production formula.
Volume Error Risk (Plant Case)
A pectin gummy brand sent top-down photos of a 4 g bear sketch and a competitor tray photo for "look and feel." No caliper numbers. We rebuilt from the images and hit a sample that poured at 4.7 g with their real gel - about 17% heavy. Packaging already claimed 4 g. They rejected the sample for weight, not cosmetics.
Fix: they shipped a hard 3D-printed master with caliper notes, we remodeled cavity volume to the gram target, and the second sample sat at 4.05-4.15 g across six pours. Production then ran on the usual 2-4 week band after written approval. Cost of the photo-only first pass: one wasted prototype cycle and a delayed launch week. Cost of a STEP or measured master up front: usually less than the scramble.
