If you're maintaining a custom RTV silicone mold, you're doing daily face care plus a scheduled look at keys and the jacket — not a laminated steel PM slogan. Daily work keeps sugar, pectin, and cocoa butter off the split. Scheduled work photographs keys, checks jacket rock, and recasts the skin before the weekend scrap spike. Storage rules keep a mold that ran well from coming back set and drifted after the off-season.

This guide is for platinum and tin cavities: master, box, A/B, keys, inner core, mother mold. They don't take the same oil as steel, and they don't have shutoff lands in the steel sense. If your PM sheet lists heaters, cold-runner seals, and water flush, you're on a molded-*part* tool — different RFQ.

Daily table-side care versus scheduled look

Daily (or each shift):

  • Clean the split of crumbs. They're grit on keys.
  • Look at flash at the named split. Growing flash is a recast/jacket work order, not only a trim problem.
  • Confirm you're on the mix traveler (which skin, which jacket), not memory.
  • Keep cavity IDs with the dumps. Mixed bags hide one dying pocket.

Scheduled (cadence tied to dumps and dump temperature, not a lucky calendar slogan):

  • Inspect keys, tears at logos, jacket rock. Photograph versus the incoming set.
  • Sticky-face check (inhibition doesn't get better in storage).
  • Finish/texture: don't "brighten" a specified grain with abrasive.
  • Recast trigger list: tear to logo/key, key play, tin size drift, warped jacket.

If PM only happens after a customer reject, you don't have PM.

Cleaning chemistry that doesn't swell the rubber

Use cleaners the RTV and the dump can stand. Aggressive solvents that swell leftover gum also attack the face. Food-contact tools have a shorter list: residues that would pass a consumer visual can fail an extraction. Write the allowed chemistry on the traveler.

Don't sand a textured cavity to "clean" it. You'll bald the grain. Don't round keys with a steel scraper. Plastic or brass tools beat knives that nick splits.

Release sprays, if used at all, are a process input. They're contamination on certified lots. Maintenance shouldn't add a secret spray that first dump never had.

Common mix-up: oiling RTV like a steel plate

A lot of RFQs treat rust preventive as universal mold care. In the shop that usually means you've swollen a food cavity. Platinum RTV: clean of cure poisons, store unstressed, cool, dark, away from sulfur. Tin-cure: assume dimensional drift with age. Neither type wants the steel-tool oil ritual. Water-out-of-circuits checklists don't apply — there are no circuits.

Who is allowed to recast should be named. A press-side "repair" with kitchen silicone at 2 a.m. is how a split becomes a ridge. Crumb removal is operator work. Recast is pour-shop work, followed by a mini first-dump pack.

If the dump changed to a hotter or more aggressive recipe after SOP, reopen the PM plan. Maintenance can't invent tear resistance the RFQ never bought.

What to ask when you're buying

  • Allowed cleaner on the traveler for this dump?
  • Storage: cool, dark, unstressed, who nests the jackets?
  • Recast triggers in writing, and who holds the master?
  • Photos of keys at incoming that we'll compare at PM?
  • Food-contact: first dumps after storage not mixed into sale cartons until residues are gone?

When this PM guide is the wrong sheet

Steel LSR/HCR tools need land, heater, and water PM — different article. A 15-dump tin art glove can skip a production traveler if you write the kill date. Geometry can override cadence: hot pectin on a 24-cavity bear needs a shorter look than a room-temperature resin jewelry glove.

Worked example

A 24-cavity gummy, 22 mm, platinum skin, fiberglass jacket, a few thousand dumps/month. PM got real when they stopped stacking jackets in a warm packing room, wrote a food-safe cleaner (no sink powder), and recast two torn ears against the still-registered master instead of running mixed bags. Incoming key photos made the recast argument short. Oil from a steel-tool crib was the contamination that started the sticky-face week.

We would not recommend oiling RTV like a steel plate

We would not recommend rust preventive, sink powder, or a 2 a.m. kitchen-silicone “repair” on a food cavity. We would not sand a textured face to clean it, or mix start-up dumps after storage into sale cartons. We would not copy a water-circuit PM sheet onto a glove mold. Recast is pour-shop work with a mini first-dump pack.

FAQ

How do I set a PM cadence without a fake dump count? Tie it to observations: flash width, key play, jacket rock, dump temperature. Start conservative after freeze, then stretch only if those stay still. Hot pectin and abrasive sugar need a shorter look. Easy room-temp resin can run longer. The traveler should show the last actual inspection.

Can I use the same rust preventive I use on steel tools? Usually no. Many preventives contaminate food-contact dumps and swell RTV. Prefer dry, closed, dark, unstressed storage. First dumps after storage shouldn't go to sale cartons until residues are gone.

What should a start-up dump after storage include? Jacket rock, key look, then dumps from each cavity compared to the retain for flash, appearance, and size at 23 °C. Document the dump as start-up, not mixed production. If a cavity is wild, stop; don't blend it.

Is ultrasonic cleaning safe on textured RTV? Sometimes, if chemistry doesn't swell the face or round the grain. Test on a non-show pocket first. When the risk is unclear, stick to the written chemistry and soft tools.

Do I maintain a printed-master prototype the same way? You maintain it as a short-life bridge: no heroic recast program if the print will be replaced, careful demold, honest retirement when layer lines were never the brand grain. Clean and store the jacket; expect to recut the master.
