Soft Candy Mold Production Beyond One Cavity
Soft candy molds cover gummies, jellies, and pectin cups. Starch moguls and platinum RTV trays are different deposit-set-dump systems, not one cavity

If you're producing molds for soft candy, you're tooling deposit, set, and dump for gummies, jellies, pectin cups, or other gelled sweets — not one cavity style.

A starch mogul bear, a platinum RTV pectin fruit, and a rigid jelly cup are three systems. Gelatin and pectin disagree at dump. Vitamin SKUs add piece-weight. Food-contact on reusable RTV is 21 CFR 177.2600 extractives and LFGB/BfR XV. An RFQ that just says "soft candy mold" without a gel and a motion will get a kitchen heart tray.
Gummies, jellies, and pectin cups aren't one pocket
Gummy in plant talk often means a chewy gelatin or hybrid piece with a 3D mascot — deep cavities, ears, logos, dump is the hard part. Jelly may be a shallower cup; draft is easier; piece-weight may still matter. Pectin pieces can be stickier and more temperature-sensitive at dump; high polish a gelatin bear loved can smear pectin. Foam, marshmallow, and aerated masses compress and rebound — say so; a bear tray is the wrong analog.
Starch mogul versus RTV tray
Industrial soft candy still runs heavily on starch moguls: print, deposit, set in starch, demold, recycle starch. Production of that "mold" is the stamp, not an RTV pour. Platinum RTV tray production (master, mold box, A/B, jacket, post-cure) shows up when starch dust is unwelcome, logos/undercuts exceed what starch prints, runs are short and branded, or the plant already owns a plate depositor. Rigid plastic remains for simple cups. Mixed production is normal: mogul hall for commodity, tray hall for branded. Don't drop an RTV tray onto a mogul line without changing deposit and dump — you produced a different machine interface.
Common mix-up: one production tool for every gel
A lot of RFQs treat gelatin gummies and pectin jellies as the same first article. In the shop that usually means you've frozen a glossy gelatin dump and you'll smear pectin at scale. Prove both. Volume and dump have to work for the stickier case. Water-fill maps catch master scatter; slurry trials catch physics. Set is cooling; tray thermal mass is second-order — don't sell a compound as a cooker.
Fill rules for viscous shots: path into thin features or don't design them; land width that doesn't bridge; don't trap air on the show face; inclusions sized below the smallest channel. Produce the dump motion in the CAD (flex axis, jacket, knock face). A floppy sheet will cool the candy and refuse to run on Monday. Wash between SKUs matters in mixed halls; ASTM D395 screens set, the stack is the test. Flash fins that hold raspberry gel will contaminate lemon.
Color changeovers are fleet production as much as kettle production. Dedicated trays for dark colors, or a wash that lifts gel from logo trenches, keep lemon from tasting like cola. If the trench is too deep to wash, that's CAD. Shelf SKUs versus seasonal SKUs shouldn't share a master panic: house cup (maybe PC, maybe starch) for the forever line, RTV faces for the six-week mascot.
What to ask when you're buying soft-candy trays
- Gel: gelatin gummy, pectin, jelly cup, aerated — which dump is worst-case?
- Starch allowed, or reusable RTV/PC only?
- Target grams, cavity depth, dump height
- Nozzle pitch and tray size vs washer
- Shore / jacket if RTV; invert vs flex
- 177.2600 extractives / LFGB per color if pigmented
Example
A pectin fruit 24-cavity RTV tray, 12 mm dump depth, 2.3 ml, Shore 25A in a resin jacket, proven after gelatin bears already ran on a 40-cavity 18 mm invert tray. Same envelope, different face, stickier dump, more draft. Acid/color staining the *next candy* is wash and crevice design; a plate that smells is article sensory and a 177.2600 / LFGB conversation — split those tickets.
When this production map is the wrong factory
Aerated or hollow shell candies need fill geometry we have to know about — a dense gummy CAD will lie. Kitchen hearts belong on the bench, not the depositor. LSR injection of silicone *parts* isn't soft-candy mold production. If Halloween is six weeks out and the envelope wasn't frozen in January, you're buying panic, not a face set.

FAQ
Can one RTV production tray run gelatin gummies and pectin jellies? If volume and dump work for the stickier case, yes. Prove both. Don't assume a gelatin first article covers pectin smear. Geometry may need more draft for pectin.
Is a mogul stamp produced like an RTV master-and-jacket? It's metalworking for a starch print, not a platinum pour. Different shop skills. Qualify the hall that matches the process.
Do aerated soft candies need different cavities? They need fill geometry that doesn't trap foam and a dump that doesn't collapse the piece. Tell us it's aerated. A dense gummy CAD will lie.
How do we keep raspberry trays from staining lemon SKUs? Wash design, no crevices, maybe dedicated trays. Candy pigment isn't plate pigment. A tray that stains is a rubber sensory/migration issue — 177.2600 / LFGB — a different ticket.
Should kitchen heart trays sit in the production fleet? For bench work, maybe. For a depositor, no. Production trays copy pitch and dump. Hearts can still be the cavity shape inside that tray.
