If you're shopping "gummy molds," you're usually shopping a cavity: something a depositor can fill to a target volume, a gel can set in, and a dump station can empty without tearing ears or smearing a logo.

The recipe isn't the mold. Gelatin, pectin, acids, colors, and any vitamin or botanical load stay with the candy or nutraceutical plant. Search results mix kitchen hearts, starch mogul starch, polycarbonate cups, and platinum RTV trays, and those aren't synonyms. On this site the production object is a flexible platinum RTV tray: master, mold box, A/B pour, keys if it splits, and a support jacket so the cavity stays flat under the nozzles. Food-contact for that rubber is 21 CFR 177.2600 extractives on the finished article after post-cure and a thorough wash, plus LFGB/BfR XV when that's the market. Tin-cure hobby RTV isn't that article. A PDF full of cold-runners and heated manifolds is a molded silicone *part* tool — different RFQ.

Plant language versus a cartoon nickname

Call it a mold, a tray, a plate, a mogul board, or a depositing tool. The functional unit is one cavity with a known volume, a fill face the head can hit, walls the slurry will wet, and a release path the set gel can take.

Piece weight on a vitamin line is mostly that volume plus slurry density and fill height. A mascot that looks right in a render can still starve at the legs, flood the belly, or lock a logo trench. We don't formulate the gummy; we freeze geometry that a stated slurry and a stated depositor can fill and dump.

Kitchen language ("bear mold", "heart mold") is a shape nickname. Plant language is milliliters, array pitch, tray envelope, dump method, and wash temperature. If a quote only lists the cartoon, you don't have a production RFQ yet.

Four forming systems that all get called gummy molds

Classic candy bears at volume often never see silicone. A starch mogul prints a negative in dry starch, the depositor fills that impression, and the starch is recycled. That's the right answer for many drafted, starch-tolerant SKUs.

Reusable trays show up when starch dust isn't welcome, when logos and undercuts need a sharp rubber face, when the run is short, or when the line already registers a plate on the depositor.

Polycarbonate (and similar rigid plastics) owns simple, drafted cups: invert-and-knock, boring dimensions, chocolate-style handling. Platinum RTV earns the tray when you need flex dump, a peelable undercut, or a rubber face in a rigid jacket. A mogul hall and an RTV tray can sit in the same factory on different SKUs; you can't swap them without changing deposit, set, dump, and hygiene. Kitchen one-ups are a fourth SKU: hand fill, hand peel, useless as a servo plate.

Deposit, set, dump on the RTV cavity

Deposit. A servo or piston head places a shot. Fill is volume plus aim point. Deep ears and letter counters starve if the slurry is viscous and the blob lands in the belly. Tight pitch plus a fat shot bridges land. Air at the bottom of a blind pocket becomes a void on the show face. The tray doesn't pump slurry; it either presents a fillable pocket or it doesn't.

Set. Gelatin and pectin set on time and temperature, not on Shore A. The cavity can't wrinkle or shed particles while the gel is weak. A floppy kitchen sheet won't sit flat on a cooling belt. Production RTV needs a jacket, or enough self-stiffness, so geometry at dump matches geometry at the nozzles.

Dump. Invert-and-knock, flex over a roller, or peel a one-up by hand. Undercuts a cook can peel will trap a piece on a line that only flexes a few degrees. Draft, radii, and a slightly open mouth do more than a spray bottle of oil. Oil is a plant decision; it isn't a substitute for geometry. Tears at thin ears are cavity *and* gel-strength together, so don't blame the mold until you know dump temperature and dwell.

Common mix-up: a retail heart tray is a line plate

A lot of RFQs treat a kitchen heart mold as a 4×10 depositing tray. In the shop that usually means you've sent envelope-free artwork and we'll have to stop you before we pour a floppy one-up that misses every pin. Retail trays lack depositor pitch, locating, a dump motion other than peel, article identity after post-cure, and a spare fleet. Lab cups are fine for a formula freeze. Co-pack needs arrays that match the head you already own.

What to ask when you're buying (so we know which object you mean)

Send these before you award a "gummy mold" PO:

  • Are we talking starch impressions, a rigid PC cup, a platinum RTV tray, or a kitchen one-up?
  • What's the depositor pitch, pin pattern, and tray envelope — or is this still a bench pipette trial?
  • Target cavity volume (ml) and dump method (invert, flex roller, peel)?
  • Platinum RTV with a jacket, or are you expecting us to quote an LSR injection tool with a cold-runner? (That's a molded *part*, not this tray.)
  • Food-contact path: 21 CFR 177.2600 extractives on *this* article, LFGB/BfR XV, or both — not a logo that says "FDA approved"?
  • Who owns the master and the jacket, and is a recast of the face in the price?

Food-contact sits on the tray you wash

If the tray is silicone and it touches the gummy, it's a repeated-use rubber article. US programs point at 21 CFR 177.2600 (water and n-hexane extractives as the section states, thoroughly cleansed). German and many EU buyers point at LFGB with BfR XV, including volatiles and sensory. Dual-market trays run both. A spatula certificate doesn't cover a 12 mm jacket with 2 mm cavity walls.

Chemistry here is platinum addition-cure RTV, poured against the master and post-cured at production thickness. Tin-cure is the wrong start. Pigments stay in the food-contact package. Starch isn't 177.2600. PC has its own plastic file. Don't paste folders.

Example

A first production tray on this route is often a 4×8 platinum RTV array, 32 cavities at about 2.2 ml, 16 mm dump depth, Shore 20A–25A face in a resin or aluminum jacket, built for a few thousand dumps a month on a servo head that already has pins. The mascot lives in the master; the jacket is what keeps pitch when the belt moves.

When this article is the wrong quote

If you actually need a starch mogul stamp and a starch process, this RTV-tray explainer is the wrong asset — hire a mogul OEM. If you need thousands of vulcanized silicone *parts*, quote HCR compression or LSR injection with a cold-runner on a parts PO, not a depositing tray. A kitchen one-up you will peel by hand can skip the jacket and the pin pattern; a servo head cannot. Geometry and the hall (dust allowed or not) override "silicone sounds premium."

We would not recommend treating a kitchen heart as a line plate

We would not recommend quoting a retail heart tray as a 4×10 depositing plate, or raising Shore A first to "make it stand up" under a servo head. Add the jacket and copy nozzle pitch. We would not cut an LSR cold-runner tool "so you own steel later" while the line still needs a cavity to dump pectin into. We would not freeze a mascot outline before milliliters.

FAQ

Is a starch mogul a gummy mold? Yes in the plant sense: the starch impression is the cavity the depositor fills. It isn't a reusable platinum RTV tray and it isn't a 21 CFR 177.2600 rubber article. Vitamin and logo-heavy SKUs often leave starch for hygiene or geometry, not because starch failed as candy equipment.

Does the gummy recipe change what the mold is? The recipe changes viscosity, set time, and how the piece releases. The mold is still a cavity with a volume, pitch, and dump path. Send slurry behavior as fill and dump constraints, not as a request to formulate vitamins or botanicals.

Are silicone baking molds the same as gummy trays? No. A muffin cup is oven geometry. A gummy tray is a depositor target with a dump station and a piece-weight volume. Food-contact chemistry can overlap (platinum RTV, 177.2600 extractives, LFGB). Register, stiffness, and fill rules don't.

Can I use a kitchen heart tray on a servo depositor? Almost never. Soft one-ups flop, miss pitch, and tear. Prototype the shape in a one-up if you must; production is a jacketed RTV tray or a framed insert that copies the line envelope.

Who is the "article" for 177.2600 and LFGB on a silicone gummy tray? The poured, post-cured tray you'll wash and fill, not a generic plaque and not the gummy itself. 21 CFR 177.2600 is extractives on that rubber article after cleansing, not an "FDA approved" stamp. The gummy has its own food rules.
