When to Reorder Custom Silicone Molds

Do not wait for the last usable mold to fail.

A practical reorder decision combines:

• current mold condition
• output quality
• remaining usable mold inventory
• production demand
• manufacturing lead time
• shipping time
• approved revision status

There is no universal cycle count that tells every buyer exactly when to reorder.

Watch for:

• tears
• damaged cavity detail
• permanent deformation
• repeated sticking
• damaged parting surfaces
• lost logo/text detail
• dimensional/weight drift outside actual requirement

Ask:

• how many usable molds remain?
• how many are approaching replacement?
• how many production days of capacity remain?
• is the SKU seasonal?
• how long will reorder + shipping take?

For critical SKUs, keep a buffer rather than waiting for zero usable molds.

Buffer level depends on:

• production demand
• mold use rate
• variability in life
• lead time
• shipping risk

Before reorder, decide:

• exact repeat?
• logo update?
• cavity-weight adjustment?
• stronger edge?
• new split/core?
• packaging/SKU change?

Do not silently change the mold while calling it a reorder.

Keep:

• approved sample
• CAD revision
• master/tool record
• material/process
• cavity count
• packaging/SKU

If the same failure repeats:

• tear at same corner
• tray warps
• logo feature fails
• operator cannot demold consistently

review DFM before repeating the same mold.

Our molds are 2–3 years old. Should we reorder now?

Age is one signal, not the only one. Evaluate condition, output quality and remaining production capacity.

One mold tore but the others are fine. Should we replace all of them?

Not automatically. Inspect the batch and the tear origin.

Can you make the reorder exactly the same?

Yes, if the approved revision/master/tool record is still available and no change is requested.

Send:

• project/SKU
• old PO or revision
• quantity
• photos of current mold condition
• requested changes
• target date
• ship-to destination

Is mold life guaranteed in cycles?

No.

Can replacement molds use a different silicone?

Only after review/approval; material changes should not happen silently.
