Vetting a Custom RTV Food-Mold Supplier, Not Logos
Vet an RTV food-mold shop by SKU files for 21 CFR 177.2600 or LFGB/BfR XV, platinum pour control, master custody, and recast identity on the PO.

If you're hunting for the “best” custom RTV food-mold supplier, you're really hunting for a document trail and a pour table you can audit, not a star rating and not the lowest piece price on a translucent muffin tray. The shop you want can name platinum addition-cure RTV, freeze compound and pigment, pour against a controlled master in a registered box, jacket the cavity, post-cure by thickness, wash the article, and hand you a report on that SKU under FDA 21 CFR 177.2600, LFGB/BfR XV, or both.

They won't call the mold “FDA approved” as a product registration. They won't sell BPA-free as the whole file, because silicone isn't polycarbonate. They won't invent certificate numbers. They won't quote a cold-runner LSR *part* tool when you asked for a casting cavity. If those habits are missing, keep walking, however good the showroom looks.
Common mix-up: the factory tour, or the Alibaba logo wall, is the food-contact file
A lot of RFQs treat a clean hall and a food-grade badge as 21 CFR 177.2600. In the shop that usually means you get a spatula PDF, a tin-cure sample that smells, and a quote that only works if post-cure is skipped.
A clean hall is useful. It isn't the flask. Ask in writing for a redacted report that matches the process they propose for you: platinum RTV against a named master, not LSR injection and not platinum HCR compression unless you also commissioned a molded *article*. If they only have a spatula file and you're buying a chocolate mold, they don't yet have your article.
Paying a tooling charge doesn't, by itself, confer unrestricted transfer. Customer-owned masters with shop-owned jackets, shared bases plus customer inserts, amortized, and supplier-financed arrangements all exist; write the one you're buying.
What to ask when you're buying (and walking) the shop
- Which process will make this SKU: platinum RTV pour, tin-cure (wrong start), or are they actually quoting LSR/HCR *parts*?
- Who compounds, and is the formulation inside 177.2600 composition constraints?
- How is the master finished (CNC, SLA post-cure and barrier coat) so it doesn't inhibit platinum, and who keeps it?
- What post-cure time and temperature apply to this wall thickness, and is that oven load recorded?
- How is the article washed before pack? Will first article be the production cavity, not a plaque?
- Which market: US 177.2600, DE-EU LFGB/BfR XV, or both — and how is a recast scheduled when the face tears?
Listen for unmixed processes. A supplier who says “we do silicone” and then quotes tin-cure craft rubber for a bakery chain isn't a food-grade mold supplier. Mixing ISO 10993 medical language into a loaf-pan quote isn't careful either. Medical biocompatibility is a different route.
Capability that actually shows up in the flask
You're buying more than a pretty cavity: dedicated or controlled food-contact pour tables so industrial oils, sulfur, and tin-cure craft work don't contaminate platinum; thickness-aware post-cure ovens with load diagrams, not a shared paint oven; incoming pigment control; masters and jackets that release cake or chocolate without an unlisted spray; lot travelers that tie gum, pigment, pour, oven, master revision, and SKU; storage so jackets don't warp and RTV isn't stacked in UV.
Cycle-time bragging, fake life claims, and invented lab logos don't belong on the scorecard. Visit or video the post-cure oven. If it doesn't exist, the report, if any, was about a lab-baked unicorn.
Walk away, or at least stop the PO, when you see “FDA approved” as a product claim; a certificate number with no lab, method, or specimen; one report covering every color and process in the catalog; oily or strong-smelling samples; craft tin-cure offered as bakeware; LFGB described as “stricter FDA”; ISO 10993 offered instead of 177.2600; refusal to name post-cure; or a quote that substitutes LSR cold-runner steel for the RTV jacket you asked for.
Worked example: first-article pack for a 48-cavity gummy sheet
A vitamin brand asked three shops for a 48-cavity gummy sheet, cavities about 20 mm, sheet roughly 380 × 280 mm, platinum RTV skin plus rigid jacket, 1,500–3,000 dumps a month, US plus German retail.
Ask each supplier to send, with first article: cavity photo, traveler showing gum lot and post-cure, pigment code, master revision, jacket keys, and the lab report on that SKU or a scheduled lab PO. If the pack is a glossy catalog and a spatula PDF, you're not looking at your mold. For Shenzhen and similar export cells, add who owns the master, who can recast a logo without losing the freeze, and how they quarantine industrial work from platinum food-contact. A video of the post-cure oven with a load card is worth more than a wall of unread ISO 9001.
Price the report in the quote so it can't vanish as a “free certificate.” Dual-market buyers should see two method lines, not “FDA/LFGB included” as a blur. Keep your own lab as a spot check on the first production recast. The best supplier expects that. If two shops score equally on files, pick the one that will still name post-cure and master revision on lot 50 when you call unannounced. Put that audit into the quality agreement so purchasing can't trade it away for a cent on the piece price.
When this article is the wrong quote
If you need a parts OEM for LSR bakeware or HCR mats, walking an RTV pour table is the wrong audit. If you only need a tin-cure resin master, food-contact isolation and 177.2600 files are the wrong spend. A 50-piece platinum RTV chocolate tray still needs the same chemistry as 3,000 dumps; volume doesn't waive the flask. A shop that's excellent at one-piece ice trays can still fail a 64-cavity depositor sheet — geometry can override the brochure.

Should I pick the supplier with the most food-grade logos on Alibaba? Logos aren't 21 CFR 177.2600 extraction of your SKU. Ask for a report that names specimen, method, and post-cure. Invented certificate numbers are a disqualifier, not a bonus.
Is a cheaper tin-cure sample acceptable if I only need 50 RTV molds? Volume doesn't change chemistry. Tin-cure RTV isn't the typical food-contact path. Platinum addition-cure, post-cure, and article testing still apply at 50 pieces.
Do I need a German lab if I only sell these trays in the US? If the market is US-only, 177.2600 on the finished article is the rubber rule most buyers cite. LFGB/BfR XV is extra unless a customer uses it as a quality bar. Write the market; don't buy every acronym.
Can I use my supplier's spatula LFGB file for my custom muffin tray? The muffin tray is the article. A spatula is a different geometry, often a different process (LSR part vs RTV mold) and post-cure. First-article the tray.
What is the one factory-floor tell that the food-contact story is real? A routed, thickness-scaled post-cure with lot records, plus a wash step, plus a report that matches the SKU, plus a master you can still recast against. If those exist, the rest of the audit has somewhere to stand.
