Food-Grade RTV Myths That Fail a Flask
Platinum-cured, translucent, BPA-free, and one oven number are not food-grade proofs for an RTV cavity. The flask, the simulant, and the sensory panel are.

If you're buying a custom RTV food mold on carton adjectives, you're letting marketing do a lab's job. Platinum-cured, translucent, odorless, BPA-free, dishwasher-safe, and "oven to 230 C" get treated as a compliance stack. They aren't. Food-contact for molds is a finished-article result under 21 CFR 177.2600 and/or LFGB / BfR XV. Platinum RTV is the usual chemistry. Tin-cure RTV is still mold-making rubber. Heat limits are grade-specific. Abrasive pads still cut the face. An LSR spatula report still isn't your chocolate cavity.

The myths that actually fail flasks
Platinum is an addition-cure catalyst system. It isn't 177.2600. A platinum pour with short post-cure, dirty pigment, or recycle oil fails flasks and sensory. Translucent is a look; industrial gums are often translucent. Odorless is a hope — if you can smell the carton, BfR XV sensory is already interested. BPA-free is a polycarbonate story. One oven number for muffins, mats, ice tools, and chocolate is a carton error. Dishwasher-safe isn't green-pad-safe. A spatula report covering the chocolate mold is the most expensive myth in OEM: injection LSR plaque isn't a platinum RTV pour.
Two purchasing myths: "we washed it, so it's food grade now" (wash is required; wash doesn't add a method) and "LFGB is the strict one, so we only need LFGB for the US too" (parallel, not nested). "More expensive silicone is automatically safer" is the cousin of platinum-as-certificate. Read the specimen line.
Common mix-up: the spatula report as the chocolate file
A lot of RFQs attach one factory flask to every kitchen SKU. In the shop that usually means an LSR plaque or a natural HCR scraper is standing in for a pigmented platinum RTV cavity. The article is the unit.
What to ask when you're buying past the myths
- Method and specimen on *this* cavity, color, pour, post-cure?
- Platinum RTV or tin-cure — not "platinum-colored"?
- Heat claim written for this duty, not copied across the catalog?
- Care card: does it forbid grit on the face?
- Are ISO 10993, BPA-free, or ISO 9001 being sold as the food file?
Worked example: hotel "dishwasher-safe" muffins that smell
A hotel bought platinum-cured translucent RTV muffins with a dishwasher pictogram and a BPA-free badge. Stewarding scored the face with a green pad. Fat in the cut is the stain. Change the care line and the pad, not the catalyst slogan. If they also inherited a muffin oven pictogram on a chocolate tool, that's a second myth — most chocolate SKUs shouldn't need that heat.

If platinum-cured translucent RTV smells a little, is it still food grade? Smell is a sensory issue. German files care. Short post-cure is the usual cause. Don't call it food-grade because it's platinum and clear. Retest after a real bake.
Is BPA-free plus dishwasher-safe enough for a US retailer? No. Ask for 21 CFR 177.2600 on the article, food type matched to flasks, and a dishwasher claim only if that grade ran it.
Can chocolate molds inherit a muffin oven pictogram? Only if you qualified that chocolate SKU at that heat, which most shouldn't need. Heat limits are grade-specific. Wrong pictograms create misuse and warped tools.
