Custom Food-Grade RTV Molds From CAD to Tested SKU

If you're ordering a custom food-grade silicone mold, you're ordering custom geometry with the same food-contact rules as catalog bakeware. A logo, a branded gummy shape, or a one-off chocolate bar doesn't waive FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 or LFGB/BfR XV. The cavity you draw is the article you have to formulate, platinum-cure, post-cure, wash, and test.

Custom is CAD, master, box, pour, jacket, first article, then a freeze. It isn't a craft pour of tin-cure RTV with a BPA-free sticker. It isn't FDA product approval of your mascot-shaped pan. If the shop can't test this SKU, you don't yet have a custom food-grade mold. You have a custom shape. If they quote cold-runners, they're quoting a molded *part*.

Common mix-up: same gum as a catalog pan, or a 3D-printed master, skips the flask

A lot of RFQs treat custom as a sandbox food law left open. In the shop that usually means a spatula file, an inhibiting SLA master, weekly logo recuts, and a trade-show sample poured in tin-cure while steel (or the production master) is still in CAM.

Write the use before the spline: chocolate, cake, gummy, ice; temperatures; markets. That sentence picks hexane vs water under 177.2600 and picks BfR XV simulants. Custom undercuts don't change the law. They change demold, wash, and whether you need a keyed split. Sister-SKU logic almost never holds. Your mascot isn't the factory spatula. Your red seasonal run isn't last year's natural sample.

What to ask when you're buying a custom food-grade RTV

  • Use and market on the RFQ before anyone cuts a master
  • Process: platinum RTV (not tin-cure; not LSR *parts* unless that's a parallel PO)
  • DFM: draft, radii, even walls, dry release, jacket, keys
  • Who pays for 177.2600 and/or LFGB/BfR XV on *this* article
  • Who owns the master, jacket, and recast; NDA and photo rights for the logo
  • Freeze list: compound, pigment, post-cure, cavity revision, claimed oven/dishwasher/freezer

From CAD to first food-contact sample

Typical custom sequence: (1) use-case and market, (2) DFM, (3) master in a registered box, (4) compound and pigment freeze, (5) first article on the production pour, (6) production post-cure and wash, (7) lab on this article, (8) freeze traveler for recasts. Skip step 7 and you have a custom industrial-looking kitchen shape. Skip step 2 and step 7 fails because the cavity only comes out with spray.

Fifty branded chocolate trays are still food-contact articles. Low volume isn't a chemistry waiver. It may change cavity count, not platinum-cure, post-cure, or the need for a report. When the custom tool later adds cavities, confirm pour balance and post-cure still match the specimen. A 1-cavity first article doesn't automatically qualify an 8-cavity production jacket if thickness or heat history changes.

IP: custom logos are drawings you should control with NDA and ownership terms. Food-contact doesn't replace IP. IP doesn't replace food-contact. If the customer iterates logos weekly, each food-contact face change is a new article.

Worked example: 35 mm mascot, 8-cavity, 200–500 dumps/month

A brand wants an 8-cavity 35 mm mascot chocolate, two-sided logo, fatty food, US plus a German specialty account, 200–500 dumps a month.

RFQ has to include food and temperature, 177.2600 + LFGB/BfR XV, platinum RTV, color freeze (or natural first article then color), dry release mandatory, who pays for the lab, master ownership, photos allowed or not. Lab hold is a gate, not optional polish after the marketing launch. If they ship trade-show samples from a craft pour while the production master is still in CNC, those samples set a false food-contact story. If a sample will touch food, it's an article: platinum-cure, post-cure, wash, and a file.

When custom food-grade is the wrong project

If you need 100,000 molded LSR *parts*, custom RTV is the wrong asset. If the shape is resin-only, don't buy food flasks. If the brand will recut the logo every Friday, you don't have a freeze — don't pretend the first PDF still applies. A one-cavity ice sphere can be a two-piece RTV with a core; a 64-cavity depositor sheet is a different custom job. Geometry can override quantity.

Copy this. A ZIP of CAD alone will get quoted as industrial RTV by somebody.

  • Target process: platinum RTV; not tin-cure; not FDA approved as a product registration
  • Color freeze or “natural first article, then color”
  • Dry release mandatory; split/jacket/core notes
  • Who pays for the lab; master ownership and revision control
  • Photos allowed or not (IP)

Send the STL, the use sentence, and who owns the mascot. We'll review the split and whether first-article testing is in the price, and we won't treat a sister spatula file as transferable.

We would not recommend launching the mascot on an untested cavity

We would not recommend a 3D-printed master plus tin-cure as this program, or transferring a catalog-pan spatula file onto a custom SKU. We would not cut 8 cavities before a one-cavity slug if undercuts need oil.

FAQ

Can I skip testing if my custom mold uses the same gum as a catalog pan? Not if color, thickness, process, or geometry (hence post-cure and wash) differ. Same gum isn't the same article. 21 CFR 177.2600 extracts the finished part.

Who pays for LFGB and 177.2600 on a custom SKU? Put it in the quote. Dual-market custom should budget both. Don't assume the factory's spatula file is included and transferable.

Is a 3D-printed master plus platinum RTV a valid custom food mold? Only if the RTV is food-contact platinum, the master doesn't inhibit cure, you post-cure, wash, and test that article. Many 3D resins inhibit platinum. Tin-cure pours on printed masters are a craft workflow, not this program.

How do I protect a custom candy logo and still allow factory photos? Contract the IP, control the CAD, limit photo rights. Food-contact reports will describe the specimen; they don't have to publish your artwork. Don't skip the report to hide the shape.

When I recut the master to fix a logo, is the old report dead? If the food-contact face changed, treat it as a new article unless quality documents why extraction would be unchanged. Recuts that add oil-needing sharpness also change the process. Retest when in doubt.
