Food-Grade RTV Mold FAQs After You Read the TDS

If you're typing questions after the RTV TDS, the TDS won't answer them. Food-grade for a custom mold is a finished-cavity result under a named method, not a color or a Shore A. The US rubber rule is 21 CFR 177.2600. German files use LFGB and BfR Recommendation XV. Platinum RTV is the usual food-contact mold rubber. Tin-cure RTV is mold-making rubber for resin and many industrial jackets. Heat limits are grade-specific. Don't cut the food-contact face to clean it. LSR and HCR answers belong on a part quote.

The questions you type before you send a master

"Is it food grade?" isn't a specification. What we can answer: what food, what temperature, what market, what RTV family, what color, what post-cure, what jacket, what cavity SKU. If those are missing, any certificate is a cousin. A spatula report is the industry's favorite cousin, and it's usually an LSR plaque. Translucent isn't a grade. BPA-free is a polycarbonate badge. Platinum isn't FDA. Dishwasher, oven, and freezer are three claims, not a bundle. ISO 10993 doesn't file a muffin.

Common mix-up: the factory "has FDA and LFGB"

A lot of brands tell retailers the product is dual-market because the factory once ran a spatula flask. In the shop that usually means the cousin SKU is doing the talking. Both reports have to exist on this cavity (or a stated representative from this compound, pour, color, and post-cure).

What to ask when you're buying after the TDS

  • Whose report covers this cavity, color, pour, and post-cure — not a sister SKU?
  • Platinum RTV or tin-cure, and why?
  • Oven, freezer, dishwasher: which claims did *this* grade actually run?
  • Who keeps the reports if the molder changes?
  • Care: is grit forbidden on the face?

Worked example: private-label muffin tray not tooled yet

A brand wants a private-label 8-cavity Bundt, 180 mm, not tooled. Until there's a production SKU, color, pour, and post-cure, you can only screen a compound with a representative article and say so. After tooling, test the tray you'll ship. A new molder with the same master and a different bake is a new article until proven otherwise.

When this article is the wrong quote

If you're specifying a molded LSR spatula or HCR mat as a *part*, this FAQ is the wrong desk — those process identities don't cover an RTV cavity, and the reverse is also false. Medical ISO 10993 leftover isn't a muffin file. A non-food resin mold doesn't need this FAQ at all.

One-page filter you can keep on the sales desk

  • No drum is food-grade
  • No cousin SKU is the article
  • No badge is a flask
  • No grit on the face
  • No universal oven number
  • Master ownership and recast written on the PO

Send the food, the market, and whether you already have a master. We'll answer platinum vs tin, which flask, and which TDS claims to delete before you talk to a retailer.

We would not recommend telling retailers the factory "has both"

We would not recommend airing out a smelly shipment as corrective action, or using baking-soda grit on a stained face. We would not file a cousin spatula flask on a tray that is not tooled yet.

Typical shop values: what a serious RFQ already names

| Item | Typical shop value | | --- | --- | | Mix | Platinum 1:1 or 10:1 | | Food-cavity Shore | 10A–20A plus jacket | | 177.2600 aqueous / fatty | 20 then 1 water; 175 then 4 n-hexane | | Shrink | ~0.1–0.3% platinum | | Untooled private-label | Screen compound only; say so until the cavity exists |

Caption these as typical shop values. The TDS plaque is still not your SKU.

FAQ

Whose certificate covers a private-label muffin tray I haven't tooled yet? Nobody's. Until there's a production SKU, color, pour, and post-cure, you can only screen a compound with a representative article and say so. After tooling, test the tray you'll ship.

Can I tell retailers the product is FDA and LFGB because the factory "has both"? Only if both reports exist on this SKU (or a stated representative from this compound, pour, color, and post-cure). A factory that once ran a spatula flask doesn't baptize your ice tool.

What's an honest dishwasher answer when the jacket includes nylon? Qualify the assembly on a defined cycle, or don't claim it. Nylon and bond lines fail for reasons the rubber flask never sees.

Is airing out a smelly shipment an accepted corrective action? No. Odor is a post-cure and formulation problem. German sensory will fail it. Fix the bake and the compound, then retest.

May kitchens use baking soda paste as a mild abrasive on stained trays? If the paste cuts or scores the food-contact face, no. Soak, soft cloth, non-scouring method. Once the face is cut, fat lodges in the score.
