Silicone Mold Smell: New Platinum vs Tin | RUUIPON

A new platinum RTV tray often smells like the shop for a short rest after demold. That odor usually drops after a wash, a cavity-up dry, and time — not after a kitchen myth (sun for three days, freezer, vinegar bath). A sour tin leftover, a rancid food film, and a solvent note from a resin wipe are different molecules. You sort them with your nose at the face vs the jacket, and with whether the smell survives a clean, dry rest. Baking a food-contact tray to "burn off" odor is how you warp it.

Does not apply when the smell is the chocolate or the fragrance oil you just poured, when you are qualifying a medical-part post-cure, or when the "odor" is actually an inhibited, uncured face (that is chemistry failure, not odor). Don't treat this as an FDA-approved-factory claim; 21 CFR 177.2600 is extraction of the finished article.

Smell as a diagnostic, not a recipe

Faint "new rubber" on a platinum tray, stronger at the sprue, fading over a rest. Cause: leftover volatiles from a fresh platinum pour. Confirm: jacket and face smell similar; a wash + 24–48 h open rest drops it; the face is fully dry, not tacky. Fix: wash per the food or craft cabinet, dry, rest. We can post-cure platinum tools when the RFQ asks for a lower starting odor. We would not recommend a backyard sun-bake as the process.

Sharp, lingering, "old tin / vinegar-sour" that never leaves. Cause: tin-cure rubber, or a platinum recast against a master that lived in tin. Confirm: the PO or the vendor said "cheaper silicone"; odor is in the bulk, not only the well; shrink may still be moving in storage. Fix: we would not spec tin for a food cavity. Recast in platinum from a cleaned master. Don't perfume it.

Smell only in used wells, not on a brand-new spare from the same PO. Cause: food film, pectin, fat, fragrance oil, or resin solvent. Confirm: the spare smells like shop-new; the used well smells like the last pour. A swab picks up film. Fix: clean correctly. Do not oil. If fragrance oil has swollen the craft tool, that is a compatibility recast conversation, not an odor hack.

Sweet-solvent or amine note, face slightly tacky. Cause: inhibition or a resin attack, not "new mold smell." Confirm: stick test on face vs jacket. Fix: stop using it for food. Remake. See the inhibition article.

Odor appears after the dishwasher, even on a platinum food tray. Cause: detergent film and trapped dirty water in micro-texture, sometimes mixed with other plastics in the same rack. Confirm: hand-washed twin from the same lot does not smell. Fix: change wash spec. Recast only if the face is already etched.

Worked example (anonymized)

A pectin gummy sheet, platinum ~25A, buyer said "smells like rubber, customers will taste it." Unused spare vs used sheet: spare was faint shop-new; used sheet smelled like last week's pectin and dishwasher. Hand-washed spare, rested, first dump with a documented food-contact path. Taste complaint left. We did not recast, did not switch to a perfume, did not oven-bake. The next PO added a hand-wash line. Geometry already locked — no $50 3D.

One procurement mix-up

"Unscented food-grade" is not a lab method. Name platinum vs tin, the wash, and the article test (177.2600 / LFGB). A trader's "no smell" photo is not a document. Tooling charge is not unrestricted ownership if you then store trays in a cardboard box with sulfur rubber bands.

• Platinum or tin, in writing, for this SKU?
• Will a post-cure be quoted if odor-at-receipt is a CTQ?
• Wash method on your line, so we don't fight dishwasher film later?
• Storage: away from latex, sulfur, cardboard with rubber bands?
• Article tests vs "unscented" marketing?
• Who owns the master if we recast from tin to platinum?

FAQ

Should a new platinum mold smell like nothing on day one? A faint shop odor is common. It should fade after wash, dry, and rest. A sour, lasting tin note or a tacky face is not "new rubber."

Will sunlight take the smell out? We would not use sun-bake as a process. UV yellows some clears and warps thin trays. Wash, dry, rest, or a quoted post-cure.

Can I use baking soda or coffee grounds in the cavities? Don't pack food wells with pantry deodorizers. You add a film you then have to rinse, and you still haven't named platinum vs tin.

Does LFGB mean odor-free? LFGB/BfR is a document pack on the article, not a smell marketing claim. Name the test. Don't treat it as a factory stamp.
