LFGB/BfR XV on a platinum RTV cavity catches volatiles and sensory a US hexane flask may miss. It is not nested 21 CFR 177.2600 or a factory badge.

If you're putting a custom RTV food mold into Germany or the EU, the benefit of LFGB isn't a shinier logo. It's a method stack on the finished platinum RTV cavity — largely BfR Recommendation XV under LFGB and Regulation (EC) 1935/2004 — that catches volatiles, simulant migrants, and smell or taste a US n-hexane flask may miss.

That's why dual-market chocolate, gummy, and bakeware molds often run LFGB *alongside* FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 rather than instead of it. The two don't nest. Platinum addition-cure RTV plus a real post-cure is the usual way to earn both. Don't invent LFGB certificate numbers, and don't call the mold FDA approved because it passed Germany. If the PDF is an LSR *part* with a cold-runner, you're not on this mold yet.
Common mix-up: LFGB is “stricter FDA,” so one German PDF covers the US carton
A lot of RFQs treat LFGB as nested 177.2600. In the shop that usually means a hexane report gets a German stamp, or a factory spatula file ships under a chocolate cavity, and the retailer quality team sends it back.
21 CFR 177.2600 extracts the food-contact surface in distilled water and n-hexane at reflux (mg/in² ceilings). BfR XV kitchenware work typically includes volatile organic matter, simulants matched to use (water, 3% acetic acid, 95% ethanol), and an organoleptic check. Acetic acid and ethanol aren't n-hexane. An under-baked platinum RTV recast can feel dry out of the box and still fail Germany on odor.
What to ask when you're buying the German path
- Is LFGB with BfR XV on *this* SKU, this color, this recast — or a factory halo / sister spatula?
- Which simulants and times match real use (chocolate ambient vs oven batter), not a copied kitchenware oven package?
- Are volatiles and sensory in the quote, and are PAHs/metals extras the buyer actually asked for?
- Same platinum RTV compound, master, jacket, and post-cure as the US 177.2600 specimen if you need both?
- Confirm current BfR XV text with the lab. Recommendations move.
What you're actually paying for
You're buying a volatiles number that punishes skipped post-cure on recasts, simulant conditions you can align to the claim, a sensory panel sales can't argue with, and pressure to freeze pigment and master revision. You're not buying a factory-wide halo. LFGB doesn't certify the building, every color, or tin-cure you didn't send.
If the same muffin tray must sit on a US grocery shelf and a German one, you want one platinum RTV compound, one master, one jacket, one post-cure, two reports. Running industrial gum for the US carton and a different “EU gum” for Germany doubles mix-up risk on the recast.
Worked example: 32-cavity chocolate coin for German retail
A confectioner sells a 32-cavity coin mold, cavities about 12 mm, keyed two-piece platinum RTV with a rigid jacket, 800–1,500 dumps a month, into German retail.
A retailer quality team typically wants a Declaration of Compliance pointing at BfR XV / LFGB supporting tests on the SKU, plus the report, plus GMP language under Regulation (EC) 2023/2006. They don't want a US hexane PDF translated with a German stamp. If the template adds PAHs or metals, budget them as extras. Translation of the DoC isn't a new test. Swapping in a prettier spatula to make the PDF look cleaner is a dishonest new test.
When LFGB is the wrong spend
Skip or delay the German stack when the mold never touches food; when the market is US-only and nobody asked for LFGB as a quality bar; when the SKU isn't frozen (weekly color or master recuts); or when you can't post-cure the thickness you actually pour. Forcing oven kitchenware scope on a freezer-only ice sphere wastes calendar. Geometry can override quantity: a 2 mm gummy skin and a 15 mm muffin wall don't share volatiles risk.

Does passing LFGB mean I can skip 21 CFR 177.2600 on a US listing of this tray? Different solvents, units, and sensory. Dual-market programs run both on the same SKU. A German pass isn't nested FDA.
Why do LFGB programs push platinum-cure RTV so hard? Sensory and volatiles. Platinum addition-cure with a real post-cure is the usual way to avoid odor failures that tin-cure and short bakes create. Tin-cure RTV is the wrong start.
Can I use one LFGB report for every RTV SKU in the catalog? The benefit is article-specific. Color, thickness, recast recipe, master, and post-cure change the specimen. A spatula file doesn't cover a chocolate mold.
Is “LFGB certified factory” a real status for a pour shop? Not as a substitute for testing the mold. LFGB applies to the article via methods such as BfR XV. Audit the report, not the banner.
Will LFGB sensory catch a mold-release oil that 177.2600 might also see? It can. Smell and taste are the German extra, and 177.2600 already expected a cleansed article. Wash production parts. Don't rely on either flask to excuse an unlisted spray on the master.
