RTV Mold Safety Standards: FDA, LFGB, Not ISO

If you're writing a safety callout for a custom RTV mold, name the method, then name the cavity. "Safe silicone mold" isn't a standard. For a tool that will touch food, safety is a finished-article result under 21 CFR 177.2600 (US) or LFGB / BfR Recommendation XV under Regulation (EC) 1935/2004 (Germany/EU), plus a pour that doesn't put the wrong chemistry on the plate. Medical, toy, and flammability stamps don't substitute. If the mold only casts non-food resin, skip the food flask and use tin-cure RTV against a master and mother mold.

What the flasks actually measure

177.2600 is repeated-use rubber. Aqueous: water reflux, 20 mg/in² then 1. Fatty: n-hexane, 175 then 4. The article must be cleansed first. A water pass doesn't cover fatty chocolate.

LFGB isn't "FDA plus 20 percent." BfR XV typically adds volatiles, simulants (water, 3% acetic acid, 95% ethanol), and organoleptic. Sensory is why a short-baked platinum RTV, or a tin-cure skin, can squeak through hexane and still fail Germany. Platinum RTV with a ventilated post-cure is the usual dual-market path; it isn't automatic. ISO 10993 / USP Class VI are medical. UL 94 is a burn class. BPA-free is a polycarbonate story. ISO 9001 is a quality system, not milligrams per square inch.

Unmix tin-cure RTV, platinum RTV, LSR, and HCR before you cite any stamp. An LSR injection tool with a cold-runner is a molded-*part* quotation, not this master-and-jacket PO.

Common mix-up: ISO 10993 as kitchen safety

A lot of RFQs treat an ISO 10993 letter as the higher food-grade stamp. In the shop that usually means you've bought a medical path and still have no 177.2600 or BfR XV result on the cavity you'll pour chocolate into.

What to ask when you're buying against a safety standard

• Which markets and which named methods on the production cavity after post-cure and wash?
• Aqueous, fatty, acidic — which flasks match that food?
• Platinum RTV or tin-cure, and is the specimen this SKU and color?
• Are ISO 10993, UL 94, BPA-free, or ISO 9001 being offered instead of the food flask?
• Care and heat: no abrasive on the face, oven/dishwasher only as tested?

Worked example: six-bar chocolate tool

A confectioner wants a two-piece platinum RTV mold for a 90 x 40 x 10 mm bar, six cavities, fatty contact, US and Germany. Call out both markets, 177.2600 hexane plus BfR XV volatiles and sensory on that production cavity after post-cure and wash, platinum (not tin), color freeze, no abrasive on the gloss face. The jacket and keys sit on the PO as hardware; the flask is the rubber face.

When this article is the wrong quote

If the cavity never touches food (resin, wax, concrete), food-contact testing is the wrong spend. If you need a vulcanized silicone *part* in volume, quote HCR or LSR with a cold-runner — those flasks still apply to the *part*, not to this RTV tooling article. A children's feeding SKU may add CPSIA; that still doesn't replace 177.2600.

We would not recommend ISO 10993 as kitchen safety

We would not recommend pasting a medical COC, a UL 94 burn class, or a BPA-free badge in place of 177.2600 / BfR XV on the cavity. We would not run only water reflux when the food is chocolate. We would not call the mold "FDA approved."

FAQ

Is "FDA approved silicone mold" a real safety class? FDA doesn't stamp a mold like a fire door. 21 CFR 177.2600 is a regulation you meet or miss as a finished article. Ask for the method, food type, and report on the cavity SKU.

Does ISO 10993 make a baking mold safe for cake? No. Cake is food contact. Use 177.2600 and/or LFGB/BfR XV on the baking cavity.

Are LFGB and 21 CFR 177.2600 the same test with different names? No. They're parallel. Dual-market programs run both.

Can a factory ISO 9001 certificate replace the extraction flask? No. ISO 9001 is a quality-management system. 2023/2006 is EU GMP. Neither is the numbered extractives result.

Do safety standards tell me how hot the RTV mold may go? Not as a universal number. Heat limits are grade-specific. Write oven, freezer, or dishwasher on the drawing for that RTV grade.
