For a custom RTV food mold, food-grade is finished-article extraction under 21 CFR 177.2600 or LFGB/BfR XV on the cavity you pour into, not a drum sticker.

What Food-Grade Silicone Means for a Custom RTV Mold

If you're buying a custom RTV silicone mold that will touch cake batter, chocolate, gummies, or ice, “food-grade silicone” isn't a color, a Shore A, or a sticker on the drum. It's a formulation plus a cure plus a finished cavity that's been extracted, or otherwise tested, under a named food-contact rule. In the US that's FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 for rubber articles intended for repeated use. In Germany, and in a lot of EU buyer conversations, the path is LFGB applied to silicone largely through BfR Recommendation XV, sitting on Regulation (EC) 1935/2004.

Platinum addition-cure RTV is the usual chemistry for that cavity. Tin-cure RTV is the wrong start for a food-contact tool. If the quote in your inbox is heated steel and a cold-runner, you're looking at molded silicone *parts*, not this mold. BPA-free is true of silicone by polymer family and still answers the wrong question, because silicone isn't polycarbonate.

A lot of RFQs treat food-grade as a catalog family you pick the way you'd pick 20 Shore A. In the shop that usually means someone ships a translucent industrial leftover, or a tin-cure craft pour that happens to look like a muffin tray, and files a sister spatula PDF next to it.

Used correctly, food-grade means the article that will touch food — the RTV face of the tray, the chocolate cavity, the gummy sheet — was made from a compound formulated for that use, cured and post-cured the way production will, cleaned, and then tested as that article. Industrial, medical, and food-contact silicones often share a polydimethylsiloxane backbone. The backbone isn't the spec.

Unmix the processes before you unmix the paperwork:

  • Tin-cure RTV: condensation cure, tin catalyst, a byproduct leaving the network. Common for resin and soap masters; not the default food-contact path.
  • Platinum RTV: addition-cure at or near room temperature, poured against a master in a mold box. That's the food-contact mold rubber after post-cure and article testing.
  • LSR: platinum, liquid, injection into a heated cavity, often with a cold-runner. Common for consumer food-contact *parts*. Different quotation.
  • HCR: millable, peroxide or platinum, compression or transfer. Common for sheets, gaskets, and some molded bakeware *parts*.

What to ask when you're buying food-grade RTV

Send these before you pick a compound or a shop:

  • Which regulation is on this cavity: 21 CFR 177.2600, LFGB/BfR XV, or both, and for which food types (aqueous, fatty, acidic, dry)?
  • Is the chemistry platinum RTV A/B, and can they name the kit? Tin-cure “that we wash extra” isn't a substitute.
  • Will the lab specimen be this recast against the production master, this color, this post-cure — or a plaque / spatula / sister SKU?
  • What's the post-cure time and temperature for the thickest wall you're actually pouring?
  • Who owns the master and the jacket, and is a replacement recast included when the face wears?
  • If the PDF mentions cold-runners or heaters, are they quoting a molded *part* instead of this mold?

If the quote only says “food grade silicone” and a Shore, you're not comparing the same job.

21 CFR 177.2600 extracts the finished rubber article

177.2600 isn't a recipe approval for a drum of gum, and it isn't a product registration. FDA doesn't approve a baking or chocolate mold the way a drug is approved. The section sets composition constraints for rubber articles intended for repeated use and then requires extraction of the food-contact surface of the finished article — here, the RTV cavity after it's been recast, post-cured, and washed the way you'll ship it.

For aqueous food, distilled water at reflux: first 7 hours not to exceed 20 milligrams per square inch; succeeding 2 hours not to exceed 1 milligram per square inch. For fatty food, n-hexane at reflux: first 7 hours not to exceed 175 milligrams per square inch; succeeding 2 hours not to exceed 4 milligrams per square inch. Those ceilings are the regulation, not a vendor's marketing limit.

The section also expects finished rubber articles to be thoroughly cleansed before food contact. Release left on the master, trim dust from the jacket, and post-cure bloom are in scope. Dry-food use is framed as suitability under good manufacturing practice; aqueous and fatty uses get the flasks. Write the food type on the RFQ or the lab will guess, usually wide.

LFGB and BfR XV are a parallel path, not a stricter reprint

EU food-contact materials sit under Regulation (EC) 1935/2004: they shall not transfer constituents in amounts that endanger health or change the food. Germany polices that through LFGB. BfR Recommendation XV is the silicone-specific document labs actually methodize.

A typical German/EU stack includes composition thinking, volatile organic matter, migration against simulants matched to use (water, 3% acetic acid, and 95% ethanol are the usual silicone set), and an organoleptic check so the article doesn't impart smell or taste. Time and temperature follow the claimed use. A pass on 177.2600 isn't a pass on LFGB, and the reverse isn't true either. Dual-market programs run both on the same RTV SKU after the same production post-cure. They don't nest.

Worked example: 12-cavity muffin tray

A bakery wants a 12-cavity muffin tray, cups about 70 mm across and 35 mm deep, food-contact, roughly 400–800 oven cycles a month, with a logo on the cup floor.

The RTV route is a CNC or fully post-cured SLA master, a square mold box, platinum RTV poured as a one-piece or keyed two-piece cavity, and a rigid support jacket so Shore 10A–20A rubber doesn't balloon under batter. Food-grade here means that platinum RTV article is post-cured, washed, and extracted under 177.2600 and/or LFGB/BfR XV as the tray that will touch batter. A recast against the same master is the usual replacement when the face tears. If the factory instead quotes heated steel, a cold-runner, and a Shore 50A LSR muffin *pan* as a molded consumer part, that's a different product line.

Even a real report is SKU-specific. A test on natural gum doesn't qualify a red jacketed mold. Change pigment, post-cure, wall thickness against the master, or the recast recipe, and you've got a new article. Food-grade also doesn't mean dishwasher-proof or oven-proof unless those uses were claimed and the test conditions matched, and it doesn't mean ISO 10993 or USP Class VI. Those are medical routes. Don't mix them into a bakeware RFQ.

When this article is the wrong quote

If the cavity never touches food (resin jewelry, soap, candles), food-contact flasks are the wrong spend. If you actually need thousands of molded silicone *parts* — a consumer muffin pan, a spatula — that's HCR compression or LSR injection with a cold-runner, a parts OEM quote, not this RTV mold. A tiny, shallow one-piece ice tray can skip some of the jacket conversation; a 64-cavity gummy sheet on a depositor usually can't. Geometry can override quantity.

What to send so we can call the cavity food-grade

Copy this onto the RFQ. A Shore number without these lines isn't comparable.

  • Food types and temperatures (cake oven, chocolate ambient, gummy dump, ice)
  • Markets: US 21 CFR 177.2600, DE-EU LFGB/BfR XV, or both — not “FDA approved”
  • Platinum RTV A/B kit (or “you specify”), Shore target, pigment freeze
  • Master type and who keeps it; one-piece vs keyed split; jacket yes/no
  • Cavity count, finished dimensions, monthly dumps
  • Post-cure for the thickest wall; recast of the RTV skin included or extra

We would not recommend a drum sticker as the food-grade file

We would not recommend treating translucent 20A, a BPA-free icon, or a sister LSR spatula PDF as 21 CFR 177.2600 on this RTV cavity. We would not raise Shore A to "make it food-grade." We would not pour tin-cure in a muffin master and wash extra.

FAQ

Is food-grade silicone a material grade printed on the RTV drum? A drum can be formulated for food-contact use, but 21 CFR 177.2600 and LFGB/BfR XV pass or fail as a finished article after cure, post-cure, and cleaning. A translucent industrial leftover, or a tin-cure craft kit that happens to be clear, isn't food-grade because it looks clean.

Does FDA approve a custom RTV baking or chocolate mold as a registered product? FDA doesn't. 21 CFR 177.2600 is extraction of the finished rubber article intended for repeated use, not a product registration. Don't print “FDA approved” on the mold; print the regulation, the food types, and that this cavity was tested.

If silicone is BPA-free, is that enough for a food-contact RTV mold? Silicone isn't polycarbonate, so BPA-free is true by chemistry and still the wrong proof. You still need named-method extraction or migration on the article you sell, plus sensory for German/EU programs.

Can tin-cure RTV be sold as food-grade if it's poured in a food-shaped master? Color and cavity shape aren't chemistry. Tin-cure RTV is condensation cure with a tin catalyst. Platinum addition-cure RTV is the typical food-contact start for the mold, after post-cure and article testing.

Does one food-grade certificate cover every recast color and every process in the shop? Process identity matters. An LSR plaque doesn't qualify a platinum RTV tray, and a natural cavity doesn't qualify a pigmented SKU. Requalify when compound, color, post-cure, or the recast recipe changes.
