When to Replace a Custom RTV Silicone Mold | RUUIPON

Replace an RTV tool when the lip tears, the face stays tacky, or the jacket no longer holds sag. Recast from the master, or lock new CAD if geometry moved.

When to Replace a Custom RTV Silicone Mold | RUUIPON

Replace a custom RTV mold when the working face can no longer dump a piece you would ship: a torn lip or serif, a tacky or oil-returning cavity, sag the jacket no longer holds, or a warp that misses the depositor nest. Most of those are a recast against a living master. New CAD is only when the millimetres, logo, or parting changed. Guessing a harder Shore from a chat is not a replacement plan. RUUIPON, Bao'an since 2018. Prototype of a revision is 3–7 business days after CAD lock. Production lots stay MOQ 20 pieces per design. USD $50 when we still have to model.

Steel cavity inserts and LSR cold-runner tools wear on a different calendar — wydsilicone.com for molded *parts*. Don't call the RTV recast a "LIM hot tool" rebuild.

Does not apply when the first dump already tore (that is DFM / first-use geometry, not end-of-life), when the face never cured (inhibition scrap), or when you want us to Sil-Poxy a food well and keep the 177.2600 story. Food cavities we would not patch.

Triggers: tear, tack, sag, warp, stain

Lip or logo land torn; flash hanging; a serif missing on the dump. Cause: fatigue at a thin land, nail nick, or a peel vector the Shore cannot survive. Confirm: raking light on the cavity vs T1 photo. If the tear started at a 0.3 mm serif you already knew was fragile, replacement without a logo-depth change will fail the same way. Fix: recast if the land was adequate and the tear is wear. New CAD (often the $50 scope) if the serif has to get thicker or the split has to move.

Face stays tacky, strings on a glove, or a film returns an hour after wipe. Cause: inhibition leftover, tin bleed, or craft oil in the texture — three different tests. Confirm: unused spare vs worker; paper-towel return-slick test; does it *string* (uncured) or only oil? Fix: stringing food skin = scrap, recast from a sealed master. Returning oil on a food well = recast in named platinum, stop oiling. Do not "post-cure harder" a used food face and keep dumping.

Cavity sags 0.5–1.5 mm under a wet dump; walls balloon; piece is overweight in the middle. Cause: missing or warped jacket, Shore too low for this pour head, or the skin stretched permanently. Confirm: dump in the jacket vs dump with the skin on the bench. If bench sags and jacket holds, replace the jacket, not the chemistry. Fix: recast skin if it took a set. Spare jacket if the plaster/resin mother mold is the failure. Large wet casting still wants a mother mold on the next PO.

Tray no longer sits in the nest; outer cavities light; center heavy. Cause: warp from heat, dishwasher, or storage fold. Confirm: straightedge on the back; nest drawing vs as-received photo. Fix: recast if the master is flat. A heat-gun flatten is not a spec.

Stain or odor that survives the cabinet wash — especially after soap or resin. Cause: cabinet cross. Confirm: spare unused well from the same PO. Fix: retire from food; recast food SKU. Replacement here is a cabinet decision, not a Shore decision.

RUUIPON Mold Structure Decision still applies when replacement is really a geometry fix: flat back → open-back; undercuts that peel → glove; if they will not → two-part / plug / core; large wet dump → mother mold. Replacing a one-piece glove that always tore at the armpit with "the same glove, 10A harder" is the wrong spend.

ISO 3302-1 M2 on the 2D stays a rubber class. It does not tell you when to scrap.

The photo that would prove a recast trigger: T1 cavity, current cavity, and the dump that failed, same scale in frame. A pile of torn trays without the master tag is not a replacement RFQ.

Worked example (anonymized)

An 8-up logo bar, platinum ~25A, 0.25 mm serif. After a season the serif land tore on three cavities. Buyer asked to "just pour harder rubber." We compared T1: the serif had nicked on week two, not week twenty. Recast-same would repeat. $50 CAD to thicken the land to a rinseable depth, lock, 3–7 business days, witness, then MOQ 20. Old skins kept as craft-only backups they did not need. Tooling charge on the first PO did not include a free geometry change.

One procurement mix-up

Replacement quantity is not "send three extras from the leftover box." A recast is a new lot against a tagged master. Unmatched floppy skins that do not key to last year's jacket are scrap. Ownership of the first tooling charge is not unrestricted rights to infinite recasts if the master was sanded or lost.

We would not recommend

We would not recommend patching a food-contact tear with household adhesive.

We would not recommend raising Shore as the first replacement lever.

We would not recommend recasting from a master that sat in the soap room if the new dump is chocolate.

We would not recommend waiting until all twenty trays fail before you send a photo — one torn land is enough to decide recast vs CAD.

What to ask when you're buying

  • Do you have the T1 photo, the master tag, and the jacket ID?
  • Tear at a land that was always too thin, or tear after a documented cycle count?
  • Food cabinet still clean, or did a craft pour happen?
  • Recast same mm, or a revision that needs CAD lock?
  • Rotation quantity so the SKU runs while Bao'an recasts?
  • ISO 3302-1 class still on the 2D, or are we also changing tolerance talk?

FAQ

Can I keep dumping if only one cavity on an 8-up tore? You can tape it off for craft. For food, a torn land is a hygiene and flash argument — recast the skin.

Is a tacky new mold a replace-at-once case? If it strings, it never was a mold. That is inhibition or off-ratio scrap, not end-of-life. Remake from a sealed master.

Do you replace steel and RTV on the same form? No. RTV recast vs steel/LSR part tool are different shops. Parts go to wydsilicone.com.

How fast is a recast if CAD does not change? You are not on the CAD clock. You are on a production recast lot — still MOQ 20 per design. A *revision* that needs lock is 3–7 business days after that lock.

Will you buy back the torn trays? No. Send photos; we recast or we redesign. Tooling charge ≠ a take-back program.
