Archive the approved reference
A reorder needs one trusted source.
Best references can include:
- approved CAD;
- physical master;
- golden casting;
- approved prototype photos;
- CTQ inspection record.
If the factory only has an old worn mold, the reorder may reproduce wear.
The master/CAD archive should identify the exact revision.
Lock material and process notes
Record:
- silicone grade;
- cure system;
- Shore if controlled;
- color if relevant;
- pigment;
- post-process;
- support shell/nest;
- special release/cleaning requirement.
A repeat order that silently changes material is a new risk. If a change is necessary, treat it as a controlled revision and validate it.
Keep one golden sample
A golden sample can help compare:
- surface;
- logo;
- seam;
- geometry;
- casting result.
For flexible molds, also retain the measurement condition.

The physical mold alone is not enough if the support method is part of the approved system.
Spare quantity depends on downtime risk
Ask:
- How many molds run simultaneously?
- How quickly can one replacement arrive?
- How often does a mold normally leave service?
- Is the SKU seasonal?
- What is the cost of one day of downtime?
- Can production continue at reduced output?
A critical line may justify more spares than a small-batch craft program.
Simple spare-planning logic
Suppose 20 molds run simultaneously and replacement lead time is several weeks.
If losing one mold removes 5% of capacity and peak season cannot tolerate the loss, the buyer may choose:
- immediate operating spares;
- an emergency spare at the supplier;
- an approved master ready for recast.
The correct number is a risk decision.
Recast the mold from the right reference
For repeat orders, the best source is approved master/CAD + original process record.
Copying a stretched old mold is risky.
If the master is lost, reconstruct from approved finished casting, CAD and measurement. Do not turn distortion into the new nominal.
Batch consistency should use a repeat inspection plan
For each reorder lot, define:
- material identity;
- Shore if controlled;
- critical dimensions;
- cavity-volume sample;
- surface/defect inspection;
- registration;
- functional cast sample where needed.
Focus on CTQs and known historical failure modes.
Track mold IDs individually
A simple ID system can record:
- mold number;
- first-use date;
- casting material;
- cycles/batches;
- repair;
- failure;
- retirement.
This helps answer whether failures are random or every mold fails at the same feature.
Reorder timing should start before catastrophic failure
Useful warning signs include the first micro-tear, weight drift, surface tack, registration wear, permanent set or cavity damage.
For high-risk production, place the reorder while the original line still runs.
