Candle Mold Seam Lines: Parting Strategy That Hides Flash

A pillar candle with a ridge down the display face reads amateur - the seam was drawn across the logo instead of into the shadow. RUUIPON builds custom candle molds at MOQ 50 with parting lines placed for wax shrink and trim tolerance. Prototypes in 3-7 days. This guide covers parting strategy that hides flash on pillars, jars, and figurines.

Quick answer: Put the parting line on the least visible edge - rear face, base ring, or between symmetric lobes - never across embossed brand text. Two-part molds with registration keys and 1-2 mm flange compression beat split-flex tricks on deep relief. Shore A 25-35, walls 2.5-5 mm, vacuum-degassed platinum silicone; flash <0.3 mm is trimmable, >0.5 mm means redesign parting.

Seam Lines vs Flash vs Parting Line

Parting line = where mold halves meet. Seam on the candle = flash + slight offset from misalignment. You control both at CAD stage - not with a knife after MOQ 50.

Where Seam Lines Show on Finished Candles

  • Front brand face - worst placement; wax meniscus highlights any ridge under rim light.
  • Sharp corners - flash folds and catches dye.
  • Texture fields - geometric bark or honeycomb hides 0.2 mm flash; smooth pillars do not.
  • Base foot - acceptable hide zone if candle sits on dish.

Surface finish intent: matte vs gloss. Logo depth: logo detail limits.

Two-Part vs Flexible Single-Cavity

Deep pillars with detail often need two-part molds with keys. Shallow tapers can use one-part peel if draft ≥3°.

Compare: two-part vs one-part. Keys detail: registration keys.

Flash Control at the Seam

  1. Flange width - ≥1.5 mm compressible silicone at parting - thin lip extrudes wax flash.
  2. Key alignment - 0.2 mm step max on sample cast.
  3. Wax temperature - too hot = thin flash finds gaps; pour spec per wax TDS.
  4. Clamp even - band on flange, not on cavity dome.
  5. Trim SOP - single-pass blade on warm candle; cold flash tears surface.

QC module: flash trimming QC. Pour geometry: spout & vent for two-part fill.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can seam be removed 100%?
On smooth pillars expect trim or brief heat gun pass - design hides remainder.

One-part mold with zero seam?
Only simple taper shapes with draft - any 360° detail needs split somewhere.

Seam on textured bark OK?
Usually yes - 0.3 mm flash disappears in texture.

Does two-part shorten mold life?
Slightly more flange wear - still hundreds of cycles. Lifespan.

Prototype shows bad seam?
Revise parting - 3-7 days rev. Revision process.

MOQ 50 multiple sizes?
Each size = separate tool; same parting rules per CAD.

Wick hole at parting?
Center wick through closed top one-part, or align half-moon on split with key - specify on brief.
