If character ears stick at 190°C, check Shore before you blame the oven

Metal muffin pans brown evenly on plain rounds and then glue a deep character ear so hard you break it off with a knife. Plastic cutters only outline dough - they do not bake a branded cavity. Soft tin kits off-gas and tear once the sheet hits real oven cycles.

We build custom silicone baking molds for bakeries and dessert brands that need the silhouette as the SKU - at MOQ 50, with prototypes in 3-7 days after CAD approval. Production sheets usually ship on a 2-4 week band. Send peak oven temp on the RFQ; we answer Shore and heat notes within about 24 hours when the file is measurable.

Tempered chocolate is a cooler, wetter job - do not reuse a bake Shore band on bars. Use the chocolate mold guide and food-grade molds page when the pour is chocolate, not batter.

Oven heat & cycle life

Quote the peak temperature on the dial you actually run for the densest SKU - not the max printed on a hobby kit box. Cookie sheets and brownie slabs stress the tray differently than a soap or candle pour ever will.

  • Most bakery quotes we clear sit around 180-220°C with an oven-rated platinum grade. Higher peaks need an explicit callout before we lock compound.
  • Pull to a flat rack and wait until the wall firms before you twist - hot soft silicone stretches ears into scrap.
  • One seasonal cookie sheet came in at Shore 45 "for durability." Ears stuck; we requoted 30-35 with 12 mm cavity gaps and a 5 mm frame. Same oven, scrap dropped on the next bake test.
  • Store flat. Folding a hot sheet sets a crease you fight all season. More on grade: platinum vs tin.

Muffin / brownie / cakelet35-45Hold shape while hot and soft
Fondant / imprint mat25-35Release texture without tearing

Cavity spacing & piece weight

Dense cookie sheets look efficient until the tray twists and half the batch browns unevenly. Space cavities for air flow and hand demold - often 8-20 mm between wells depending on depth and sheet size.

Full layout math: multi-cavity silicone mold layout.

Wall thickness & frame stiffness

  • Cavity walls 2.5-5 mm for most cookies - under ~2 mm tears at character roots.
  • Frames 4-8 mm on large sheets so hot trays do not flop when you pull from the oven.
  • Detail: wall thickness guide.

FDA / LFGB path for baking

Food-grade is not automatic because the mold is pink. US retail wants FDA 21 CFR 177.2600; EU often wants LFGB. Tell us the market before you print "food safe" on the bag.

FAQ

What Shore A is best for custom silicone baking molds?

Most cookies and shallow cakes land in Shore A 30-40. Soft 25-35 helps deep character cavities. Firmer 35-45 keeps muffin and brownie sheets from flopping when hot.
