First-Order Mistakes When Ordering Custom Silicone Molds
Avoid common first-order mistakes: unclear deliverable, incomplete files, skipping prototype validation, undefined ownership, wrong material documents, unrealistic lead time and shipping assumptions.
Most first-order problems start before production.
The buyer and supplier may both say “silicone mold” while imagining different objects, different acceptance criteria or different production methods.
Use the checklist below before approving tooling or production.
Clarify:
- flexible casting mold?
- finished silicone product?
- metal tooling?
- LSR part?
- overmolded assembly?
A picture can start the discussion.
Production still needs:
- scale
- dimensions
- function
- critical geometry
- application
Skipping DFM can create:
- trapped undercuts
- bad parting line
- weak web
- poor support
- equipment mismatch
Do not multiply:
- wrong cavity weight
- bad logo
- poor fit
- difficult demolding
- unstable tray
Agree on what the prototype must prove.
Ask for:
- exact material/grade
- required documentation
- destination market
Do not accept a vague “FDA silicone” statement as the whole compliance plan.
NDA, CAD ownership, master/tool custody and exclusivity are separate.
Logo, cavity count, dimensions or material changes after approval can require rework/new prototype.
Large flat molds can have high volumetric weight.
Quote logistics from the packed shipment.
We have a competitor quote with free design changes. Should we compare only unit price?
No. Compare what design work, prototype, tooling, material, QC and shipping are actually included.
Can we send a real sample instead of final CAD?
Yes, especially for fit-sensitive projects.
Can we order only 20 after prototype approval?
For applicable RTV mold production, yes.
Before payment:
- deliverable clear?
- legal supplier clear?
- DFM complete?
- CAD scope clear?
- prototype plan clear?
- acceptance criteria clear?
- MOQ/production scope clear?
- ownership/NDA clear?
- document scope clear?
- shipping term clear?
Is the cheapest tooling quote usually best?
Not necessarily.
Is every revision included?
No; define revision scope.
