The mold should be engineered around those local features before overall Shore or wall thickness is chosen.

Find the longest forced demolding path

Trace how the resin casting leaves the mold.

For every protrusion, ask:

  • how far must the silicone stretch;
  • in what direction;
  • through what narrow opening;
  • what thin mold section carries the strain.

A small ear may require only local peel.

A crossed arm may create a locked loop.

The geometry decides whether to:

  • peel;
  • split;
  • add plug;
  • redesign.

Protect the display face when choosing the seam

For figurines, the easiest mold split may run through the face.

That can create finishing work on every casting.

Better options can follow:

  • hairline;
  • clothing edge;
  • side seam;
  • back;
  • texture valley.

The seam choice should balance release and cosmetic cleanup.

Local plugs can solve one locked feature

Good plug candidates:

  • under arm;
  • loop handle;
  • between legs;
  • deep accessory recess.

A plug can keep the main seam away from the face.

But too many plugs increase assembly time.

If the whole figure is globally locked, a multi-part mold is usually cleaner.

Sharp master notches become tear starters

Inspect the negative silicone geometry.

A narrow V-shaped gap between fingers can produce a razor-thin silicone fin.

Possible DFM improvements:

  • increase radius;
  • open the gap;
  • slightly thicken fragile feature;
  • change pose;
  • move split through the feature.

Small sculpting changes can dramatically improve mold life.

Vent the extremities

In a closed mold, fingers/ears often sit at high points.

If air cannot escape:

  • finger tip is missing;
  • bubble sits in ear;
  • surface is incomplete.

The vent should be placed based on casting orientation.

Keep vent scars away from the hero face where possible.

Resin type changes demold behavior

A flexible/impact-resistant resin may tolerate more manipulation.

A brittle rigid resin may chip thin features.

A fast PU resin adds pot-life pressure.

A thick epoxy pour adds heat.

Tell the mold maker the actual resin system.

Prototype repeated demolding, not one cast

One successful pull is not enough.

The prototype should repeat the hardest operation several times while inspecting:

  • whitening in silicone;
  • tear initiation;
  • plug wear;
  • seam mismatch;
  • damage to resin fingers/ears.

If the same local zone deteriorates immediately, redesign before production quantity.

Mother mold for larger figurines

A larger full-3D figurine may use:

  • flexible RTV skin;
  • rigid FRP/printed mother mold.

The rigid shell keeps shape while the silicone peels around detail.

This can be better than increasing Shore globally.
