A fiberglass (FRP) jacket is a polyester or epoxy laminate mother behind a platinum RTV skin. It takes bolt clamp, wet concrete head, and a pressure-pot conversation that plaster and bandage will not survive in a carton. It is not the cavity, and it is not an LSR steel tool. Layup happens over a released glove or over a printed plug so the shell can come off. Food trays rarely need FRP: a chocolate sheet wants a board, a dry well, no grease, no tin. Save FRP for craft dumps that load the skin.

Does not apply when you meant a printed jacket (next page), poured gypsum, or a heated LSR cavity with a cold-runner. Don't paste 177.2600 onto a polyester laminate. Styrene in the shop is a craft-cabinet problem; keep it off food skins.
When FRP wins the Structure Decision
Flat back → open-back; FRP only if you added a lid for a pot. Else peel? If no → two-part, and FRP can be the two jacket halves with dowels. Large wet dump → mother required; FRP if it ships or clamps.
Plaster is cheaper and heavier and chips. Bandage is faster on a statue and crushes under psi. Print is accurate on keys and weaker in thin walls unless you thicken. FRP is the millwright answer: flanges, bolts, bushings, a flash land that isn't gypsum dust.
Release the platinum before gelcoat. If you bond FRP to the glove, you own a composite brick. Split the jacket on the same land as the skin. Pins live in the FRP, never through a food well.
ISO 3302-1 M2 is a dump drawing class, not a laminate spec.

Layup notes buyers actually feel
Gelcoat against the glove for a smoother seat. Core thick spans if the shell would oil-can. Flanges wide enough for clamps. Unique pip so halves cannot close backwards. Vent the dump on purpose; don't let a whistle at the FRP seam seed bubbles in a vac-cast.
Food: we would not lay FRP over a chocolate tray "for stiffness" if a board would do. Cabinets split. Styrene and couverture don't share a tote.

Worked example (anonymized)
Concrete paver glove, platinum ~20A, plaster mother cracked in the first export crate. We laid FRP with flanges and jacket dowels, same unsanded master, $50 CAD only for flange bolt pattern. Witness wet dump, MOQ 20 skins, one FRP mother. Food not on the PO.

Styrene, food cabinets, and recast discipline
Polyester layup belongs in the craft cell. We would not laminate FRP on the same bench as an open chocolate tray. After the jacket exists, recast skins onto it without sanding the master. Don't grind the gelcoat into the well. Don't grease the seat "so the glove drops in" on a food SKU — food skins that even need FRP are rare; if you got here, you probably wanted a board.
A flange that is too narrow will crush under clamp and print a step into the glove back, which then prints into a wet dump as a faint land. Wide flanges, distributed bolts, unique pip. Platinum mix stays 1:1 or 10:1 by weight; FRP resin mix is a different cup, a different cabinet, a different waste stream.
If the first FRP shell oil-cans, we core it or thicken it. We do not "just pour a thicker glove" to fake stiffness. Shore 10A–20A still wants a mother under wet kilograms.
Export: FRP ships; plaster doesn't. Put crate notes on the PO. Tooling charge is not humidity insurance.
If you already own a cracked plaster mother, don't wrap FRP over the crack and call it upgraded. Lay up on a released glove or a dummy at the correct shape. Wrapping a broken gypsum core traps dust against the platinum and then you recast twice.
One procurement mix-up
Calling any hard shell "fiberglass." Print, plaster, and FRP quote differently. Tooling charge is not a boat shop, and it is not unrestricted title to a laminate you then cut bolts into through the well.

Keep a spare skin on the same FRP keys so a tear does not stop the dump line. Rotation is cheaper than a rush laminate.
What to ask when you're buying
- Dump mass, pot/vacuum, freight — do you even need FRP?
- Same land on skin and jacket?
- Dowels in the FRP, unique pip in the rubber?
- Print vs FRP for this span?
- Who stores the mother after recast of the skin?

FAQ
Is FRP food-contact if I gelcoat it glossy? The jacket isn't the food article. The platinum skin is. Keep polyester off the well. Dry cavity, no tin.
Can I pressure-pot inside an FRP jacket? If the shell and seals are rated and the pin never enters the dump. Unrated layup is still not a vessel.
Does FRP change platinum shrink? No. Skin shrink is still about 0.1–0.3% after full cure. The jacket fights sag, not shrink.
If the glove tears, do I throw away the FRP? Usually no. Recast the skin onto the same mother.
Why not always print instead of FRP? Print wins on CAD keys and small shells. FRP wins on large spans and field repair. We pick from the envelope, not from a trend.
