A custom RTV mold lasts as long as the face still dumps a shippable piece: the rubber has not torn, taken a sag set, gone tacky, or picked up a cabinet it cannot leave. That is a rubber tool calendar, not a steel-cavity hour meter. Life is dump chemistry (cool chocolate vs hot resin vs abrasive plaster), Shore, whether a jacket stops 0.5–1.5 mm sag, and how you wash and store. What actually uses up an RTV tool
Steel life is abrasion of a hard cavity and fatigue of ejector hardware. RTV life is the elastomeric face:
- Tear at lands and lips. Thin logos, knife nicks, invert dumps on a 10A glove.
- Set and sag. Wet plaster, tall resin heads, missing jacket.
- Chemistry. Some amines, hot wax, abrasive cement fines, dishwasher jets.
- Library. UV, ozone, stacking keys, tin after-shrink in storage.
- Cabinet cross. One resin pour retires a food skin regardless of cycle count.
Platinum holding about 0.1–0.3% shrink is a size story, not a life meter. Tin that keeps shrinking can "die" in the library with almost no dumps.
Symptom: dumps still release but flash grows, weight drifts, or the jacket keys walk. Cause: stretched shut, worn land, or tin moving. Confirm: T1 photo vs now; piece weight log; jacket fit. Fix: recast skin, spare jacket, or — if geometry was always fragile — new CAD before you multiply MOQ 20 of a dying design.
ISO 3302-1 M2 on the 2D is how we class rubber dump tolerance. It is not a cycle rating.

The photo that would prove a life argument: piece-weight chart (your data) next to a raking-light cavity at T1 and at "we're done." We will not invent that chart for you.
Steel vs RTV: stop mixing the hour meters
A WYD steel tool for an HCR *part* is paid off over thousands of press cycles. An RTV tray is cheap to recast and expensive to abuse. If your catalog needs a year of daily abrasive concrete dumps without recast, we will tell you silicone may be the wrong tooling material — or we will quote rotation quantity plus a mother mold, not a fake steel life number on rubber.
RUUIPON Mold Structure Decision still changes life: a one-piece glove on a figurine with armpit undercuts will tear sooner than a keyed two-part. Flat back → open-back. Undercuts that will not peel → split / plug / core. Large wet dump → mother mold. Structure is a life lever.

Worked example (anonymized)
A 6-cavity plaster trivet, platinum ~30A open-back, no jacket. After a short run the wells went oval and the back curled. Buyer asked "how long should it have lasted — 500 pours?" We never sold 500 as a number. Bench dump vs jacketed dump on a mule showed sag was the limiter on pour one, not pour 500. Recast with a plaster-compatible jacket, same CAD, no $50 model fee. MOQ 20 of the jacketed design. First tooling charge did not include a free jacket; we added it as a line. Concrete fines will still abrade — rotation planned.
One procurement mix-up
Copying "silicone molds last 5–10 years" from a kitchen-blog spatula page onto an RTV RFQ. A finished HCR article and a 20A dump tray do not share a calendar. Write dump, wash, and recast. Tooling charge ≠ a decade of unlimited skins if the master is gone.

FAQ
Is there a standard number of uses for platinum RTV? No standard we will print as a warranty. Chemistry, Shore, jacket, and wash dominate. Plan recast from a living master.
Will a harder Shore last longer? Sometimes against abrasion. Often it will tear a different land or mark the dump. Don't raise Shore as the first life lever.
Does food-contact documentation expire when the mold ages? The article you dump is what you test. An aged, nicked, or mixed-cabinet skin is a new article conversation. 177.2600 is not a factory stamp that ages on a wall certificate.
Can tin-cure last as long if I store it cold? Cold slows some processes. Tin still tends to keep shrinking vs platinum's about 0.1–0.3%. We would not spec tin for a food library to "save money on life."
If I need years without recast, should I go steel? If you are molding silicone *parts*, yes — WYD. If you are dumping chocolate or plaster *into* a cavity, steel is a different process (and often the wrong release). Talk volume and dump, not a vibe.
