Why Photo-Only Molds Freeze the Wrong mm | RUUIPON

A photo tells us the style of the dump. It does not tell us the millimetres. If you approve production from an unscaled JPEG, you freeze the *wrong size* into every cavity of every tray in the MOQ 20. Perspective shortens the back. A three-quarter shot hides wall thickness. A cropped listing image has no datum. We can start from photos — that workflow lives on custom molds from photos — but we still build a model, you still lock millimetres, and simple 3D is USD $50 when that CAD scope applies. Rubber is poured after CAD lock, not after the first WhatsApp image.

Does not apply when you already have STEP in millimetres with CTQs — skip the photo workflow and send the file to what files to send. It also does not apply to reverse-engineering an LSR cold-runner from a selfie; that object is a wydsilicone.com *part*.

Why a photo freezes the wrong millimetres

Perspective. The lens makes the near ear larger than the far ear. If we model "what the picture looks like," the master is lopsided. A millimetre ruler in the *same plane* as the part is the minimum datum. A coin in the corner is not.

Missing back. A hero shot hides the wall, the hollow, and the undercut that decides split vs glove. Approving a grey render built from that shot copies the guess into the tool. You only discover the hook on demold 1.

Wrong object. Buyers photograph the *mold* they already own (stretched, nicked, already shrunk) and ask us to copy it as the product. We will copy a worn cavity if you say so. We will not treat that JPEG as nominal millimetres for a new SKU.

Silent scale. "About a bottle cap" is not 18 mm. "Life size" on a phone screen is not 1:1. STL exporters that assume inches vs millimetres are the 25.4× version of the same mistake.

Once that wrong millimetre is in the master, platinum RTV will copy it faithfully (typical shrink about 0.1–0.3% after a full cure). The rubber does not save you. Twenty tools at MOQ 20 just multiply the error.

We would not recommend

We would not recommend locking MOQ 20 from one unscaled phone photo of a competitor SKU. You will own twenty copies of a guess.

We would not recommend using the $50 line as a way to skip millimetres. The fee buys a model you can mark. It does not invent a length that was never in the frame.

We would not recommend photographing a stretched old cavity and calling it the new nominal. Say "copy wear" or send a drawing.

We would not recommend starting the 3–7 day clock at the first JPEG. The clock starts at CAD lock.

A tooling charge is not unrestricted ownership of the model we built from your photos unless the PO says so.

Worked example (anonymized)

A craft brand sent one three-quarter JPEG of a 3D-printed fox and wrote "50 mm tall." The print in the photo was sitting on a cutting mat with 10 mm squares — but at an angle, so the 50 mm in the caption was the *mat* count in the near field, not the fox. We asked for a ruler on the fox's spine. True height was 38 mm. Simple 3D at USD $50. They approved 38 mm at CAD lock. Prototype in 3–7 business days. If we had frozen 50 mm from the caption, every cavity in the MOQ 20 would have been 12 mm tall. The photo did not lie about the fox. It lied about the millimetres.

The photo that would prove a good pack: ruler touching the spine, four views, 38 mm written in the email. The photo that proves the failure: a beauty shot, no ruler, "50 mm" in the caption only.

Common mix-up: the render is the approval

A grey render looks decisive. It is only as true as the datum you gave us. Approving the render without checking one length on a caliper (or on a printed master) is how the wrong millimetre survives CAD lock. Print the master, measure it, then lock. ISO 3302-1 M2 on a drawing does not rescue a 12 mm scale error; M2 is a rubber-article class, not a photo scale.

What to ask when you're buying

  • What is the one millimetre datum, and is the ruler in the same plane?
  • Is simple 3D in scope at USD $50, or do I already have STEP?
  • Positive dump vs negative cavity — which did I photograph?
  • When is CAD lock (that starts the 3–7 day pour)?
  • Who approves millimetres before anyone mixes A/B?

FAQ

Can you really not work from one clear photo? We can talk style and feasibility. We cannot freeze production millimetres. Add a ruler, a stated length, or a sample. Then the $50 CAD line (when it applies) has something to lock.

If I write "50 mm" in the email, is that the datum? Only if it matches a ruler in the frame. A caption without a scale is how the fox became 50 mm when it was 38 mm.

Does the $50 fee mean you will invent the back of the part? No. USD $50 is simple 3D when that scope applies — turning *measured* photos into a model. Hidden backs, deep undercuts, and organic sculpture rebuilds are extra conversation, not free millimetres.

What if my only sample is in another country? Ship it if millimetres matter (fit, grams, a bore). If you cannot, over-build the photo pack: more views, a ruler, two stated lengths that must agree. CAD lock still waits for you to approve those lengths.

When do you pour the rubber? After CAD lock, in the 3–7 business day prototype window. Not after the first JPEG. Production stays MOQ 20 pieces per design. Do not multiply a photo guess to twenty tools.
