A good photo-based project needs enough reference information to reconstruct:
- overall proportions;
- backside geometry;
- undercuts;
- base;
- logo;
- wick path;
- seam strategy.
The most important thing the buyer can provide is not "more photos." It is one verified dimension plus useful coverage.
Choose one hero view and one scale dimension
Start with the image that best represents the final candle.
Then provide at least one real dimension:
- overall height;
- maximum width;
- base diameter;
- known feature length.
That dimension anchors the 3D model.
Without scale, a photograph can only establish proportions.
Front, back, left, right and top matter
For sculptural candles, send:
- front;
- back;
- left;
- right;
- top;
- base;
- close-ups of critical detail.
If the object is asymmetrical, take all views at approximately the same camera height.
Do not use only wide-angle phone photos taken from different distances if accurate proportions matter.
Mark which details are essential and which are flexible
A photo may contain:
- decorative fold;
- surface texture;
- jewelry/accessory;
- fine facial detail;
- background object;
- temporary stand.
Tell the designer which features define the product.
Otherwise the 3D modeler must guess.
Useful notes:
- "handle opening must remain open";
- "logo must be centered on front";
- "face should match this reference closely";
- "back texture can be simplified";
- "base may be flattened for stability."
Photo reconstruction is not the same as exact reverse engineering
From photos, the factory can create a close 3D interpretation.
But a photograph usually cannot prove:
- exact depth on hidden faces;
- internal geometry;
- precise radii;
- true orthographic dimensions.
If the project must match an existing physical object precisely, send the sample or a 3D scan.
If the project is a new sculptural candle concept, photo-guided modeling is often sufficient with an approval stage.
Convert the visual shape into moldable geometry
The approved 3D model still needs DFM.
Review:
- undercuts;
- closed loops;
- thin fingers/ears/accessories;
- handle openings;
- deep texture;
- parting line;
- removable plugs;
- support shell need;
- wick access.
A model can look perfect and still be impossible to demold reliably.
Photo-to-3D work should therefore include a molding review before the master is printed.
Approve turntable renders, not one perspective
Ask for:
- front;
- back;
- left;
- right;
- top;
- 3/4 views.
This reveals problems hidden by one flattering angle.
For important sculptural work, a simple turntable animation or 360° render is better than a single screenshot.
Lock logo and seam placement before the master
If the candle has a visible brand mark:
- send vector artwork;
- define raised/recessed result;
- mark the hero/display face;
- identify "no seam" regions.
This allows the designer to place the split where finishing is easiest.
Changing the seam after the master is built can force a tooling redesign.
Target candle weight is useful even when the design is sculptural
If retail packaging is sold by weight, tell the factory the target grams.
The 3D model can be volume-checked.
However, wax density and cooling behavior vary, so final weight should be validated on the prototype pour.
The mold should not be sold as "exact grams from photos."
Prototype with the actual wax
The first wax pour should check:
- overall appearance;
- finished dimensions;
- approximate target weight;
- seam;
- logo;
- wick;
- release;
- surface finish;
- fragile features;
- support/bulging.
Use the real wax/fragrance system if possible.
