Pinch Test: Fillers in Cheap Silicone Molds | RUUIPON

A pinch that turns the rubber white is a filler clue. It is not a food-contact document, not a platinum certificate, and not a reason to keep dumping chocolate into a $10 tray. Highly filled silicone often blanches where you fold it because the matrix stretches and the filler particles scatter light. Unfilled or lightly filled platinum can stay closer to its color. That is a shop-floor screen, not 21 CFR 177.2600.

If you are trying to decide whether a cheap custom-looking mold is actually a food-path tool, this is the test people learned on YouTube — and the test they over-read. Does not apply when the tray is a rigid PC chocolate mold, when you are pinch-testing an HCR *part* (that RFQ is wydsilicone.com), or when the rubber is foam or a sponge. Also does not apply as a pass/fail for LFGB. Color change is not an extraction.

What the pinch is actually showing

Fold a corner of the jacket or a tab that is not a cavity face. Hold it. Look at the crease.

Stays near the original color. Low filler, or a pigment that masks the blanch. Platinum food trays we pour are not designed to "prove" themselves this way. A pass here still needs the document pack if the dump is food.

Crease turns chalky white, then color returns. Common in heavily filled, cheap tin or mystery rubber. Fillers (silica, chalk-type extenders) make the sheet cheaper and stiffer than the Shore number suggests. They also correlate with oil bleed, odor, and a cavity that tastes like the tray.

Stays white, cracks, or powders. The matrix is tired or the filler load is extreme. Do not food-dump that skin. Recast is cheaper than a recall conversation.

Sticky crease, white or not. Inhibition or undercure. The pinch is the wrong test. Look at the cavity face vs the jacket back. Face tacky + back cured is a master problem (sulfur, latex, raw SLA), not a filler problem.

Do the pinch off the cavity when you can. Crushing a logo well to "test food safety" is how you tear the only sample.

Fillers versus the food-doc path

Fillers are not automatically illegal. They are a cost and a mechanical choice. The failure is using pinch-white as a substitute for:

• Named cure system (platinum for food cavities; we would not spec tin for those)
• Named compound and color on the CoC
• 21 CFR 177.2600 extraction on the finished article, and/or LFGB / BfR as a separate pack
• A wash + post-cure before first food contact

A clear platinum skin can still fail an extraction you never ran. A filled industrial sheet can pinch-white and be perfectly honest as a *craft* jacket. Cheap custom molds fail buyers when the listing says food-grade, the pinch is white, and the PDF is a gum-supplier letter for a cousin grade. Read the food path here: food-grade molds. Oil on the cavity after a week on the shelf is a second cheap-tray tell. That is not the same as a platinum post-cure odor that rinses off. If the tray weeps, stop food use and say so in the recast RFQ.

Procurement forwards a video of a buyer folding a tray that "stayed pink" and asks us to match it. Staying pink is not extraction. We would not write a CoC from a pinch. Send the intended dump, the market, and whether you want a recast of that geometry in platinum. If the cheap tray is the only master, we will scan/model ($50 when that scope applies) and you will sign millimetres — because the cheap tray has already shrunk.

Worked example (anonymized)

A 24-cavity gummy tray bought as "FDA silicone," pinch-white on every rib, faint oil on the cavity after two weeks. The buyer asked us to "use the same mold, better rubber." We did not pour on that skin as a master (oil + unknown tin residue can inhibit platinum). We took cavity photos plus a caliper on three pockets, charged $50 CAD to rebuild a clean master, locked CAD, poured platinum 20A–40A with a jacket so outer-row sag stays in the 0.5–1.5 mm conversation, and listed 177.2600 on that compound. Prototype in 3–7 business days after lock. MOQ 20 of that design. The pinch video was not in the shipper.

How this shows up on a recast PO

If you are replacing a cheap set, write three facts that the pinch video never contains: cavity millimetres (or a caliper photo of three pockets), dump chemistry, and whether the old skin ever saw tin or oil. We archive a sealed master so the second lot matches the first. A tooling charge still is not unrestricted ownership of that master — put recast rights on the PO. Mix on the recast is 1:1 or 10:1 platinum with 0.1–0.3% shrink already in the master. Do not ask us to "pour harder Shore" to hide filler in the old tray; Shore will not delete chalk.

We would not recommend

We would not recommend using a pinch test as incoming QC for a food PO. Write the compound and the report names.

We would not recommend pouring platinum onto an oily cheap tray and calling it a recast. Inhibitors and tin leftovers live there.

We would not recommend tearing a logo well to pinch-test it. Use a tab.

We would not recommend reading "BPA-free" on a filled tray as a food path. Silicone is not PC; that sticker is answering the wrong question.

What to ask when you're buying

• What cure system is written on the PO — platinum or tin?
• Which extraction pack ships, named to this compound?
• Will you accept a pinch video as a substitute? (We will not.)
• If replacing a cheap tray, who models the master and who signs mm?
• Hand-wash vs dishwasher on the recast?

FAQ

If my mold pinches white, is it unsafe? White means likely filled, not "poison." For food, treat it as a clue to stop trusting the listing and to recast on a named platinum path.

If it does not pinch white, is it food-grade? No. Pigment can hide a blanch. Food-grade is the compound plus extraction, not a color trick.

Do RUUIPON trays pinch white? We do not use pinch as a ship criterion. Ask for the compound path and the report pack for your market.

Can I keep using a white-pinch tray for resin? Craft resin is your risk call. Do not then put chocolate in the same skin and borrow a food story.

Will you certify my Amazon tray if the pinch looks good? No. We recast from a locked master. MOQ 20 per design after prototype. We do not stamp someone else's mystery rubber.
