Hairspray Is Not a Named Resin Release Spec | RUUIPON

Salon hairspray is a perfume, polymer, and propellant mix sold for hair, not a mold-release TDS. Spraying it into a platinum RTV well can leave a tacky film that prints into the next dump, inhibits a recast if you pour new rubber against that face, and does nothing for a geometric hook. We would not spec hairspray on a production tool. We would not spec it on a food cavity at all — chocolate and gummy wells stay dry: no grease, no tin, no pantry or bathroom aerosols. If a craft dump needs a barrier, name a release the resin supplier actually lists, on a craft SKU only.

Does not apply when you are releasing the *master* before the first RTV pour (that's a sealer/release-on-pattern page), when the dump is tempered chocolate, or when the "spray" is a named food-contact release on a WYD tray RFQ. Don't treat a viral video as a 177.2600 path.

What hairspray actually leaves in the well

Aerosol hair products lay down a thin polymer. In a warm shop it stays slightly tacky. Resin keys into that film. Demold can feel "easier" on dump one and worse on dump four, when the film has built up and the well is dull. Confirm: unused cavity from the same tool, never sprayed, still peels; sprayed wells print orange-peel and smell like salon. Fix: stop spraying; clean a *craft* well only if the face is still chemically intact; recast if the texture is gone. Do not solvent-soak a food skin to chase perfume.

Hairspray also is not vacuum. It will not collapse bubbles in your dump. It is not a pressure pot. It is not a split.

If the piece is glossy and fully cured but will not pass a hook, you need the RUUIPON Mold Structure Decision, not more spray: flat back → open-back. Else peel without tearing? If no → two-part / plug / core. Large wet dump → mother mold.

Food cavities stay un-sprayed

We would not put hairspray, cooking spray, petroleum jelly, or talc in a chocolate or gummy well. Those films become part of the article you did not extract. 21 CFR 177.2600 is on the finished rubber article plus whatever you left in the well. Tin-cure leftover plus an aerosol is two reasons we will not spec that path.

Craft PU/epoxy can use a named release when the TDS of *that resin* and *that rubber* agree. Write both names on the RFQ. A "non-stick silicone" marketplace claim is not a release spec.

The photo that would prove the myth: sprayed well with orange-peel print next to an unsprayed cavity on the same tool, plus the aerosol can in frame. Don't send a hair-salon still life.

Named craft release versus a bathroom aerosol

A resin TDS that lists a release is a pairing: that rubber, that dump, that film thickness. You wipe or spray a *measured* coat, wait the flash time, then pour. Hairspray has none of those lines. It also fights a later platinum recast: leftover polymer can leave the new face sticky while the jacket cures. Confirm with a 20 g slug on a sprayed coupon if you already contaminated a craft well.

Food remains a hard no. Even a "food-grade aerosol" from a grocery aisle is not our chocolate SOP. We quote platinum, dry, no tin. If release is truly required on a food tray, that is a named conversation with documents — not a salon can, not Vaseline.

ISO 3302-1 M2 on the dump drawing does not authorize an unofficial film in the well. Tooling charge is not unrestricted ownership of a filmed cavity you then ask us to bless with 177.2600.

Worked example (anonymized)

A 4-cavity PU dice mold, platinum ~20A. Buyer sprayed hairspray after dump 2 stuck. Dumps 3–5 printed a pebbled face; unused fifth cavity (they had a spare) still glossy. We asked them to stop. Recast the four filmed wells from the unsanded master; moved a closed-letter undercut to a small plug instead of more spray. CAD $50 because the plug was new. MOQ 20 after the witness. Food was never on this PO.

One procurement mix-up

Treating "mold release" as one SKU from a drugstore. Master release, craft dump release, and food-cavity policy are three lines. Tooling charge is not permission to aerosol the well however you like and still claim the original article test.

What to ask when you're buying

• Dump family: food, PU, epoxy, wax — and is a named release even allowed?
• Geometry: hook that needs a split, or a film problem?
• If craft release is quoted, what is the exact product name?
• Recast plan if a viral spray already filmed the face?
• Who owns the master after that recast?

FAQ

A video said cheap hairspray is "the same as Mann release." Is it? No. A named release has a TDS and a resin pairing. Hairspray has a beauty label. We would not treat them as cousins.

Can I use hairspray on the master before pouring platinum? Don't. Perfume and polymer films are inhibition and texture risks. Seal or release the master with named products.

If I already sprayed a chocolate tray, can I dishwasher it back to food? We would not put that tray back on a food line. Recast platinum, dry well, no tin.

Will more Shore A reduce the need for spray? Harder rubber can make a hook worse. Structure first, Shore second.

Does a pressure pot replace release? A pot shrinks bubbles in the dump. It does not substitute for a split or a named craft barrier.
