When a urethane or epoxy dump will not leave a platinum RTV cavity, do not copy a chocolate-temper checklist. Couverture release is contraction of Form V crystals. Resin lock is chemistry plus geometry: the dump got hot enough to grab the face, an amine-rich mix etched the skin, the piece never shrank off a hook, or you poured a still-wet mix into a well that then vacuum-locked. Flexing the tray harder usually tears the rubber before it frees the part.

Does not apply when the pour is tempered chocolate or pectin, when the cavity face is still chemically tacky from inhibition (that skin is scrap — see the inhibition notes, not this dump-lock page), or when you bought a $10 tin-cure hobby tray and the PU bonded to a bleeding face. Those are different physics.

Four locks you can tell apart on the bench

Piece comes out with a matte, chalky skin; the empty well looks dull and slightly swollen. Cause: exotherm. A thick epoxy or fast PU dump in a deep well can spike hot enough to locally cook the platinum face. The rubber does not melt; it takes a set against the dump and the dump keys into that texture. Confirm: a thin 2 mm coupon from the same cup releases; a 20 mm puck from the same cup locks. Infrared on the next dump, or a sacrificial well with a thermocouple, shows the spike. The empty cavity is no longer glossy where the mass was thickest. Fix: thinner dumps, a slower hardener, a heat-sink jacket, or a split so you are not trapping a brick. Recast the cavity if the face is already cooked. We would not “just go 50A” to survive an exotherm you have not measured.

Piece smears, smells amine-sharp, and the well stays greasy after a solvent wipe that used to leave it dry. Cause: amine or some UV oligomers attacking the platinum surface. That is not the same as first-pour inhibition on the master. The jacket back is still a clean rubber. Confirm: a cavity you never filled is still dry. Used wells smear. A paper towel from the used well smells like the hardener, not like tin bleed. Fix: barrier coat only on a *craft* tool if we will name the coat; change resin family; recast if the texture is etched. We would not grease a food-contact cavity to hide this, and we would not keep a food path on a resin-etched well.

Piece is glossy and fully cured; it will not pass a hook, a closed letter, or a bail. Cause: undercut. The dump has no shrink-off the way chocolate does. PU and epoxy often grow a hair as they gel. A one-piece glove that peeled a clay master will not peel a rigid dump. Confirm: raking light on the empty well — no etch, no cook, a visible hook. The tear, if any, is in the rubber lip, not a chalky face. Fix: run the RUUIPON Mold Structure Decision. Flat back? Open-back. Else can a 10A–20A peel without tearing? If no → keyed two-part, removable plug, or core. Large wet dump → mother mold. Harder Shore is the wrong first lever; it locks the hook tighter.

First centimetre of the pour was milky and the well is glued at the floor only. Cause: wet mix, trapped solvent, or a pressure-pot skip that left a vacuum pocket under a skin. Confirm: the lock is local; walls peel. A needle vent on the next dump pops a bubble and the lock drops. Fix: change *your* pour. Recasting a smooth cavity copies a smooth cavity and still glues a wet mix.

The photo that would prove the cause: dump still in the well, then the empty well under a raking LED, coin for scale, a spare unused cavity in the same frame. A beauty shot of a freed coaster is not that photo.

Worked example (anonymized)

A 6-cavity PU figurine, platinum ~20A glove, no jacket. First dump released. Dumps 8–12 locked at the torso, 18 mm thick. Buyer asked for 40A. We asked for a thin sprue coupon from the same cup — it released — and a photo of the empty torso well, now matte. Exotherm, not Shore. Recast as a keyed two-part with a plaster jacket so the next dump could not sit as a hot brick. Shore stayed in the 20A band. CAD already locked; no $50 3D. MOQ 20 after the witness.

One procurement mix-up

“Non-stick silicone” on a marketplace listing is not a resin-release spec. Platinum RTV is a low-surface-energy tool. It is not a Teflon liner for every amine epoxy. Write the resin family, peak exotherm if you know it, and whether the geometry has a hook. Tooling charge is not unrestricted ownership of a recast after you change resin without telling us.

We would not recommend

We would not recommend copying a chocolate-stick SOP onto a PU dump.

We would not recommend raising Shore A before you have an empty-cavity photo and a thin-vs-thick coupon from the same cup.

We would not recommend prying a locked dump with a metal spatula toward a logo. You will start a tear we then have to recast.

We would not recommend oiling a food-path cavity “just this once” because you also pour resin in it. Cabinets split; a resin well is retired from food.

What to ask when you're buying

  • What resin family and hardener, and has anyone measured peak temperature in this well?
  • Is the tool one-piece because the master peeled, or because a rigid dump will peel?
  • If the face cooks, is the recast quoted on the same master or a new CAD pass ($50 when that scope applies)?
  • Food and resin in the same cabinet? We would not. Say which SKU this well is.
  • Who keeps the master after a recast? Charge ≠ unrestricted title.

FAQ

Is resin stick the same as chocolate stick? No. Chocolate usually fails when it never contracted. Resin fails when it cooked the face, etched it, or sat behind a hook. Do not send a temper log for a PU dump.

Will mold release stop epoxy from locking? A named craft release can help a *craft* well. It will not fix a hook or a cooked face, and we would not put it on a food-contact cavity. Say the dump on the RFQ.

Can I freeze the mold to pop the resin out? A short chill can shrink some PU. Shock-freezing a thick epoxy often cracks the dump and nicks the well. Confirm cause first.

Does a pressure pot prevent lock? It reduces bubbles in *your* dump. It does not open an undercut and it does not cool an 18 mm exotherm brick.

If you recast, do I pay CAD again? Only if we still need CAD scope — USD $50 when that applies. A cooked face on a locked master is a recast, not a remodel. Production after a clean witness is still MOQ 20 pieces per design.
