RTV mold durability is tear, jacket set, recast readiness, and face abrasion on the production cavity. Don't buy a brochure dump count.

Durability Testing for Custom RTV Food Molds

If you're writing a durability clause for a custom RTV food mold, a brochure that says "10,000 dumps" isn't a test. Durability is whether the cavity still releases, still registers to its jacket and keys, and still presents a food-contact face a lab would recognize, after the duty you actually run. Tear and hardness drift are rubber methods. Jacket warp and key wear are hardware. Face abrasion from wash is what bakeries see first. 21 CFR 177.2600 and LFGB / BfR XV tell you what left the rubber into a flask; they don't tell you the tray survived a year of scoopers. A replacement skin is a recast against the same master, if the master still exists and hasn't been sanded "to clean it up."

Protocol the duty, not a cycle slogan

Write temperature, food soil, demold, wash, jacket condition, and a fail definition (tear, slump, lost register, odor, stained cut) before the first cycle. Bakeware, chocolate, gummy dump, and ice don't share a cycle. Platinum RTV that skipped post-cure "fails durability" on day one by smell — that's sensory, not tear. LSR cold-runner tools are a different quotation for molded *parts*.

Shop checks that map: peel a bar from the logo n times; Shore A drift after heat-age; jacket set from a rack; key wear on pips or CNC bosses. ASTM D624 on plaques can screen RTV lots; it doesn't replace a cavity peel. Don't treat a molded-rubber tolerance class as a synonym for RTV cavity accuracy — accuracy here is master finish plus box rigidity plus jacket plus a consistent pour.

Heat-age at the claimed duty, not at 230 C because a competitor printed that number. Ice tools are freeze-and-flex; oven-aging them is usually an illegitimate claim.

Common mix-up: extraction pass as durability

A lot of RFQs treat a 177.2600 pass as proof the mold will last. In the shop that usually means you've measured what left the face into a flask, not whether the logo tears or the jacket warps after wash.

What to ask when you're buying a durability protocol

  • What's the fail definition: tear, slump, lost keys, scored face, odor?
  • Which duty (oven/dump/freeze), wash chemistry, and is grit forbidden?
  • Will you recast against the same master, and who owns that master?
  • Plaque tear only, or a SKU peel on the production cavity?
  • Platinum vs tin — are those families mixed in one matrix?

Worked example: 16-cavity whoopie, recast vs new master

A bakery runs a 16-cavity whoopie, 70 mm, platinum RTV in a fiberglass jacket, a few thousand dumps a month. Protocol: production batter, 180 C, peel, soft-cloth wash, inspect lettering and keys every 50 cycles, fail on logo tear or lost register. When the skin tears, recast if the PO reserved the master. If the master was sanded or lost, you're back to CAM.

When this article is the wrong quote

If you need cycle life on an LSR consumer muffin *cup* as a molded part, this RTV recast protocol isn't that test. If the mold is a one-off resin tool you expect to scrap after a dozen pulls, a full durability matrix is the wrong spend. Geometry can override quantity: a thin ice web can fail in tens of pulls even when plaque tear looks fine.

FAQ

Does a 21 CFR 177.2600 pass mean the RTV mold is durable? No. Extraction is flask chemistry. Durability is tear, jacket set, key register, slump, and face condition after duty and wash.

Which tear check should I put on a chocolate-mold RFQ? Screen lots on plaques if you want, then peel a bar from the logo n times and inspect lettering and keys.

Can I heat-age ice tools at bakeware oven temperature to save a protocol? No. Heat limits are grade-specific. Ice tools are freeze-and-flex.

Is a dishwasher qualification a durability test? It's one wash condition, only if you claimed it for that RTV grade. It doesn't cover abrasive pads.

Should tin-cure RTV sit in a durability matrix with platinum RTV bakeware? No. Tin-cure is resin and many industrial jackets, not dual-market bakeware chemistry. Mixing families produces numbers you can't file.
