A cloudy RTV mold is usually a surface or a swell, not a "grade that went bad." Solvent that the rubber drank, detergent or hard-water film, micro-tears that frost the face, and condensation in texture all read as haze. Straw-yellow from UV is a different color. A returning slick is oil or tin bleed, not cloud. You confirm with an unused spare, a raking light, and — if you can spare a sprue — a cut edge: skin haze vs bulk haze. LSR *parts* that blush after a post-cure oven are a WYD conversation: wydsilicone.com. Don't use a cloudy spatula as evidence against an RTV tool.

Does not apply when the tool was never clear (pigmented food trays), when the haze is chocolate fat bloom on the *pour*, or when you mean yellow. Yellow has its own page. This diagnostic is the milky, frosted, or translucent-gone-dull face.

Symptom → cause → confirm → action

Haze only where you wiped with acetone, IPA flood, or "resin cleaner." Rubber feels puffy, then dull as it recovers. Cause: solvent swell. The network drinks the solvent, light scatters, dimensions move. Confirm: OD vs T1; a cut through the wall is cloudy near the face, clearer in the bulk, or the whole thickness went translucent. Fix: stop that solvent. Named wipe only. Recast if the face stays frosted or the well is now oversized. We would not acetone-flush a food well because it worked on the resin glove.

Milky film, face not swollen, fog from a breath beads in islands. Cause: detergent, hard water, or dishwasher silicate film. Confirm: unused spare is clear; a dedicated rinse + cavity-up dry returns some clarity; a fingerprint smears the film. Fix: rinse until matte, change wash spec. Recast only if the film has etched texture you cannot rinse. Don't oil to "restore gloss."

Frosted look along a flex crease or a logo land, like scuffed matte. Cause: micro-tears / abrasion — Scotch-Brite, a knife, or too many invert dumps on a 10A skin. Confirm: raking light; fingernail catches; T1 was glossy. Cut edge is clear in the bulk. Fix: recast. Raising Shore might slow the next scuff; it will not polish this face. Food well: do not buff.

Cloud that appears in the fridge then fades in the room. Cause: condensation in micro-texture, sometimes sugar bloom on a *chocolate* leftover — check whether the rubber or the pour is white. Confirm: empty dry tray vs tray that still has cocoa butter in the serif. Fix: dry the tool; demold in the cool room. Not a recast if the empty spare never hazes.

Whole sprue and jacket back were milky at demold, including unused faces. Cause: moisture in the mix, a "clear" kit that was never water-clear, or tin. Confirm: paperwork and the sprue. Fix: remake in named platinum if clear is actually the spec. Don't dye it.

Buyer compared this haze to a yellowed peroxide HCR part. Cause: wrong family. Fix: route parts to WYD. Keep this an RTV face conversation.

Worked example (anonymized)

A water-clear resin figurine split, platinum, used with a flood IPA wipe between pours. Three weeks: milky face, dumps still released, photography looked fogged. Drawer spare from the same PO still clear. Cut sprue: haze concentrated at the wiped face. We stopped IPA flood, switched to the resin vendor's named wipe, recast one photography skin. No Shore change, no $50 3D. Jacket reused. Buyer kept the milky skins for non-photo runs. Tooling charge ≠ a lifetime against solvent choice.

One procurement mix-up

"Cloudy means it's absorbing chemicals so it isn't food-safe anymore" is a scare line. Cloud is a process symptom. Food-contact is still an article extraction path (177.2600 / LFGB) for a named pour. A milky resin tool was probably never on that path. A milky *food* tray after a dishwasher film is a wash spec, not proof you bought the wrong catalyst.

  • Do you actually need water-clear, or is pigmented easier to QC?
  • What wipe or dishwasher will the line run on day two?
  • Platinum named, stored dark, T1 clarity photo?
  • Food cabinet vs resin solvent cabinet — two skins?
  • If haze shows, is the spare still in the library for this A/B?

FAQ

Is a cloudy mold unsafe for chocolate? Cloud is not a toxicity assay. If that well also saw resin solvent or soap, retire it from food for cabinet reasons. If it is a food tray with dishwasher film, fix the wash; recast if the face is etched.

Can I heat the mold to drive solvent out and clear the haze? A warm dry can help residual solvent leave. It will not heal micro-frost, and it can yellow a clear tool. Don't torch a food skin.

Why is the inside of the well cloudy but the back still clear? That pattern fits a wipe or a pour stain, not a bulk mix error. Match the process that only touches the face.

Does platinum stay optically clear forever? No. Light, heat, solvent, and scuff still move it. Platinum is the better clear start, not a window spec.

Do I need new CAD if the well went milky? Only if you are also changing geometry. Haze is a chemistry/use issue. $50 CAD is not a polish.
