BPA-Free RTV Molds: Wrong Chemical, Real Flask
BPA is a polycarbonate story. Custom RTV food molds pass or fail on extractables, volatiles, and sensory, not on a BPA-free carton badge.

If you're hunting BPA in a custom RTV muffin or chocolate cavity, you're hunting the wrong chemical. Bisphenol A is a building block of polycarbonate and some epoxy linings. Polydimethylsiloxane is a different polymer. A food-contact platinum RTV article doesn't get its backbone from BPA, so "BPA-free silicone" is usually true in the same way "lead-free cotton" is true. It isn't a food-contact test. The methods that decide a baking mold, chocolate mold, gummy sheet, or ice tool are 21 CFR 177.2600 and LFGB / BfR Recommendation XV.

What actually leaves the RTV face
Custom mold elastomers here are platinum RTV for most food-contact cavities, tin-cure RTV for resin and many industrial jackets, and LSR or HCR only if someone wants a molded *part*. Catalysts are platinum complexes or tin soaps, not bisphenols.
177.2600 extracts the finished cavity: water 20 then 1 mg/in² aqueous; n-hexane 175 then 4 fatty. German files add volatiles, simulants, and sensory. Short post-cure, dirty pigment, oils, and a sticky inhibited platinum face (undercured SLA master, tin on the bench) are the real species. Phthalate-free is the same empty badge, copied from PVC. If the SKU includes a plastic lid or nylon locator in the jacket, test that piece with a plastic method.
Common mix-up: BPA-free as the food-grade file
A lot of RFQs treat a BPA non-detect as the rubber extraction. In the shop that usually means you've satisfied a portal checkbox and still have no 177.2600 or BfR XV result on the cavity.
What to ask when you're buying a "BPA-free" mold
- Which food-contact method and specimen cover this cavity, color, and post-cure — besides the BPA line?
- Platinum RTV or tin-cure, and is a tin kit being sold under the same badge?
- If there's a plastic lid or printed window, which method covers that piece?
- Can we keep BPA-free as a secondary sentence and attach the real flask?
- Did anyone skip post-cure because the BPA screen was clean?
Worked example: 18-cavity gummy bear
A candy line wants an 18-cavity bear, 15 mm tall, acidic fruit syrup, dual-market. Useful claim: platinum RTV, 177.2600 and BfR XV on that color after post-cure. If the retailer still wants BPA-free, keep it as a secondary sentence. Don't borrow an LSR spatula PDF.
When this article is the wrong quote
If the SKU is a polycarbonate chocolate bar mold or a PC baby bottle, BPA *is* the right chemical — this page is about siloxane RTV cavities, not PC. Mixed SKUs (RTV plus a PC frame) need both files. A non-food resin mold doesn't need a BPA chromatogram *or* a food flask.

We would not recommend a BPA badge as the food file
We would not recommend skipping post-cure because a BPA chromatogram was non-detect. We would not treat phthalate-free as a better carton line. We would not file a rubber flask as a bisphenol assay of a plastic lid.

FAQ
Is food-grade RTV BPA-free by definition? A BPA non-detect is expected because the backbone isn't bisphenol A. That isn't a food-contact pass. Ask for 177.2600 and/or LFGB/BfR XV on the finished cavity.
Why do ice tools and chocolate trays still print BPA-free? Retail search. The badge doesn't name a rubber method and doesn't distinguish tin-cure RTV from platinum RTV.
Could an RTV mold still contain BPA from a pigment or a plastic insert? A mixed SKU can. Test that piece with a method that fits it.
Is phthalate-free a better carton line than BPA-free? No. Same empty badge, copied from PVC. Test a plasticized frame if you have one.
Does a BPA non-detect mean I can skip post-cure? No. Post-cure is about cyclics, residues, and odor. Those fail volatiles and German sensory.
