Silicone Color Matching: Pantone, Pigment and Lot Control

Color matching is a manufacturing-control problem, not a demolding problem.

A useful color target identifies:

• visual reference
• material/process
• translucency/opacity
• surface finish
• lighting/inspection condition
• acceptable variation

Color can look different when the same pigment is used in different silicone formulations or surface textures.

Pantone can be a useful communication reference.

It is not a guarantee that a translucent silicone will look identical to printed paper/plastic under every light.

Silicone appearance can change with:

• thickness
• background
• pigment loading
• base polymer
• surface texture

For compression-molded products, define:

• material
• pigment/masterbatch
• approved color sample
• production lot control

LSR uses process-specific color dosing/pigment systems.

The color target should be validated on the actual material/process.

Color may be used for:

• SKU identification
• batch identification
• brand appearance
• operator differentiation

For food-contact molds, pigment/formulation can also affect document scope; verify material/report coverage.

Gloss/matte/texture affects perceived color.

Approve color under a defined lighting/reference condition when color is critical.

Keep:

• approved color reference
• material/pigment record
• lot/batch identification
• retained sample where appropriate

Can you match a physical color sample instead of Pantone?

Yes. A physical standard can be useful.

Will Pantone look exactly the same in translucent silicone?

Not necessarily.

Can we approve the color before production?

Yes. Color should be approved on the actual material/process where important.

For food-contact or regulated/customer-controlled products:

• confirm whether color/pigment changes the document scope
• use the approved material/color combination

Is color matching only for finished silicone products?

No. RTV molds can also be colored, though commercial priority differs.

Does color affect Shore A?

Pigment systems can interact with formulation/process; use the actual compound/process, not assumptions.
