Cavity design, not a supplement formula
Intake that helps: target piece mass range and a measured or estimated slurry density so we can set milliliters; gelatin vs pectin vs blend as a dump note; inclusions as a fill note; depositor pitch and dump motion; whether starch is forbidden; markets for the plate (US rubber, LFGB, both).
Intake we'll refuse or redirect: milligrams of a vitamin per piece as a master dimension; health claims to engrave in the cavity; ISO 10993 as a substitute for food-contact; "make it a dose" as a CAD instruction.
If you need 2.0 g ± a plant tolerance, we design milliliters at the density you'll run. If density changes with flavor, freeze density, accept mass change, or change shot. The cavity can't assay a nutrient.
Draw the cavity as a cup with a volume, then apply art. Fill-to-brim is easier to deposit consistently than a vague meniscus in a wide dish. Deep skinny necks miss mass. Map air: the show face shouldn't be a blind pocket. Map flow: the shot should reach appendages. Map land: neighboring cavities shouldn't bridge. Water-fill the one-up, then slurry-fill. Vitamin QC will use the slurry number.
Shape that actually dumps in a GMP hall
Vitamin gummies are often smaller, denser, or oilier than candy bears. Dump still follows geometry: draft for knock, flex only if the station flexes; radiused ears (many vitamin SKUs shouldn't have candy-thin ears); logo that leaves at that gel's dump temperature; no knife demold. "Adult" versus "kid" shapes are marketing. Mechanically they're volumes. Circles dump. Brands still want bears. Bears can dump if ears are honest.
Scored tablets that look like a break-in-half gummy are a notch. They aren't a split dose unless the plant actually dumps two pieces. Don't put "50/50" milligram callouts on the score. If you want two masses in one pouch, tool two cavities. Engraving "take two" into the cavity is artwork that must dump; instructions belong on a label we don't write.
Supplement halls often ban starch, which picks RTV or plastic plates; geometry then picks between those two. Platinum RTV, post-cure, 21 CFR 177.2600 extractives and/or LFGB/BfR XV. Not tin-cure. Not a spatula report. Not USP Class VI as fashion. Design plates that rack-wash without ovaling so piece volume stays the design volume after Monday. ASTM D395 screens set.
Common mix-up: designing the gummy is formulating the dose
A lot of RFQs treat cavity CAD as "how we design a gummy that contains 500 mg of X." In the shop that usually means you've asked us to confirm a label. You design milliliters. The formulator puts X into the slurry at a concentration that hits the label when mass is in range. We shouldn't confirm 500 mg.
Plant constraints belong on the design sheet next to milliliters: allergen lines, dedicated colors, a washer that only holds a 400 mm tray. A beautiful 500 mm tray is a non-design. Keep a killed-idea list: through-holes, interlocking two-piece gummies, engraved milligram claims, starch "just for this prototype" in a dedicated hall, tin-cure repairs. Photograph the dump of the one-up next to a scale ticket. If grams are right and ears are torn, the next pass is roots, not milliliters. If ears are fine and grams are low, the next pass is volume or shot, not a new mascot.
If flavors will change density, design a fill line operators can see, or accept that shot weight is the control and the cavity is a max cup. A small witness mark on the land, outside the show face, can help.
What to ask when you're buying the vitamin cavity
- Target grams and density (or ml), fill-to-brim or fill-to-line?
- Starch forbidden? Dump motion? Nozzle pitch?
- Mascot vs cup — will ears survive a GMP no-knife rule?
- Scores as geometry only, no milligram engraving?
- Shore / jacket / tray size vs washer?
- 177.2600 extractives / LFGB on the tray, not ISO 10993?

A 2.0 g vitamin oval: 24-cavity platinum RTV, 8 mm fill height, ~2.0 ml at the measured density, Shore 25A, aluminum jacket, invert dump, same envelope as the plant's 400 mm washer. One-up first. No IU on the master.
When this design method is the wrong meeting
If you need a formula, a stability study, or a label, that's another room. If starch is allowed and the shape prints, you may not need a plate at all. Medical-device files don't make a vitamin tray safer. CBD-adjacent SKUs use this same cavity logic with no dosing and no medical claims — tooling only; finished-product rules vary by market.

Should vitamin gummies be simple cups to dump cleaner? Cups dump. Brands still want mascots. If you need both, radius the mascot and prove a one-up. Don't skip draft to keep a sharp cartoon.
Can we design one cavity for three flavors with different densities? You can. Mass will move with density unless the depositor changes shot. Freeze slurry density, accept the mass range, or tool to the worst case and tune shot. The cavity is one volume.
Do we need medical-grade silicone to design vitamin cavities? No. You need food-contact platinum RTV as an article under 21 CFR 177.2600 extractives and/or LFGB. Medical files are for devices. A vitamin gummy mold isn't a device by slogan.
Where does starch belong in vitamin gummy design? Only if QA allows starch in that hall and the shape prints. Many vitamin designs start by forbidding starch, which means plate geometry from day one.
