How PU Dumps Shorten Platinum RTV Mold Life | RUUIPON

A platinum RTV cavity that dumps chocolate for a season is on a different clock than the same geometry dumping polyurethane. PU is a hotter, chemically nosier guest: exotherm in thick sections, isocyanate leftovers, and a dump that often grows a hair as it gels instead of shrinking off the way couverture does. The face goes matte, then tacky, then tears at a lip you used to peel. Cycle life is a rotation and recast plan, not a warranty number we invent. We would not grease a food well to "protect it" from a PU side-hustle — cabinets split; a PU well is retired from food.

Does not apply when the dump is epoxy (different hardener, different page), tempered chocolate, or plaster. It also does not apply to HCR compression *parts* sitting in PU foam in a finished-goods warehouse. Don't paste 177.2600 onto a PU block because the rubber is platinum.

What actually eats the face

Thick, fast PU in a deep well. Exotherm cooks the platinum locally. Confirm: a 2 mm sprue coupon from the same cup releases glossy; a 20 mm torso locks and leaves the well matte. Fix: slower hardener, thinner dumps, a heat-sink jacket, or a split so you are not trapping a brick. Raising Shore A first locks a hook tighter and does not cool the mass.

Isocyanate / amine-adjacent etch. Used wells smear; unused cavities on the same tool stay dry. Paper towel from the well smells like hardener. Fix: named craft barrier only on a *craft* tool if we will name the coat; change PU family; recast if texture is etched. We would not oil a food path "just this once."

Mechanical: hooks, closed letters, no shrink-off. PU often does not contract like chocolate. A one-piece glove that peeled a clay master will not peel a rigid dump. Run the RUUIPON Mold Structure Decision: flat back → open-back. Else peel safely? If no → two-part / plug / core. Large wet dump → mother mold.

Fatigue after many releases. Lip nicks accumulate. Rotation (spare skins on the same jacket keys) beats gluing a tired flange.

Dump count is not a published guarantee. Typical shop talk: food platinum trays often outlast PU figurine gloves on the same Shore band because the dump is cooler and cleaner. We will not invent a cycle number for your unnamed PU.

Recast triggers we actually use

  • Face matte at the thickest mass, unused spare still glossy → recast; change the pour or the split.
  • Key torn, shut steps → recast keys or move them into the jacket.
  • Tacky etched smell → recast; do not send that skin back to a chocolate line.
  • Master still unsanded and revision-locked → recast is cheaper than a new CAD pass. USD $50 only if geometry must move.

Keep the master. Tooling charge is not unrestricted title, and it is not a promise we store the pattern forever — put archive duration on the PO.

Worked example (anonymized)

Six-cavity PU bust, ~18 mm at the chest, platinum ~20A glove, no jacket. Dumps 1–6 released. Dumps 10–14 locked and left the chest matte. Buyer asked for 40A and a food-grade PDF "for extra life." We refused the food paper on a PU well, asked for a thin coupon from the same cup (it released), recast as a keyed two-part with a plaster jacket so the next dump could not sit as a hot brick. Shore stayed in the 20A band. CAD locked; no $50 3D. Rotation of two skins, MOQ 20 after the witness.

One procurement mix-up

"How many times can I use it?" on a marketplace listing is not a PU cycle spec. Platinum is low surface energy, not a Teflon liner for every isocyanate. Write the PU family, peak temperature if you have it, and dump thickness. Don't ask us to match a $10 tin hobby tray's "500 uses" claim.

What to ask when you're buying

  • PU family and hardener, dump thickness, any peak-temp reading?
  • One-piece because the master peeled, or because a rigid dump will peel?
  • Rotation qty — one skin or spares on the same jacket?
  • Recast from unsanded master vs new CAD ($50 if scope applies)?
  • Who stores the master, and for how long?

FAQ

Does a harder tray last longer in PU? Sometimes the lip nicks less. If the failure is exotherm or a hook, harder rubber holds the lock. Confirm the empty well before you chase Shore.

Can I pressure-pot the PU to save the mold? A pot shrinks bubbles in *your* dump. It does not cool an 18 mm brick and it does not un-etch a face.

If I demold sooner, do I get more cycles? Demolding green PU can tear the lip worse. Follow the PU TDS, not a wish to spare the rubber.

Will tin-cure last longer against PU because it's "tougher"? We would not spec tin for a food path, and for production PU we still prefer named platinum. Tin leftover and shrink are a different headache.

Do spare skins need a new CAD fee? Not if the master and revision are locked. USD $50 only when geometry changes. Production remains MOQ 20 per design.
