Mold Release vs Sealer on 3D-Print Masters | RUUIPON
Release on an SLA master is not a sealer. Some sprays inhibit platinum. Seal for cure, release only if the master must survive. MOQ 20, $50 CAD.

A sealer on a 3D-printed master is a barrier so platinum can cure against photopolymer, powder, or porous FDM. A mold release is a slip film so the rubber can leave a master you want to keep. They are not the same can. Some aerosol "mold releases" inhibit addition-cure rubber or print a texture into a food well. Wash, UV, seal, slug 20 g. Add a platinum-compatible release only if the master must demold intact and the slug still snap-cures. Hairspray is not either job.

Does not apply when the master is CNC metal you already know, when you are spraying dump resin inside a *finished* cavity, or when the RFQ is food and you hoped a kitchen spray would "FDA" the print. Sealer still is not a 177.2600 letter.
Seal first; release only after a passing slug
SLA inhibition is leftover monomer and some resin packages. Sealers (compatible coatings, not random craft spray) go on after wash and UV. Then slug. If the slug is tacky, change sealer or change master — do not add more release.
Release is for *peel of the master*, especially a print with mechanical lock you still want to keep. A sacrificial print that can be cut out of a glove does not need release. A food logo print that must come out clean still needs seal more than slip.

ISO 3302-1 M2 is a dump class. $50 CAD applies when the print cannot be sealed and you need a pour-ready master instead.
Food cavities: we would rather recast from a sealed, slug-passed print than season a well with unknown aerosol. Dump release (chocolate, resin) is a later SOP inside the finished tool, not this can.

Failure: tacky face after "just a little spray"
Symptom: cavity greasy against the print; sprue fine; buyer says they used mold release to help.
Cause: release that inhibits platinum; sealer skipped; latex on the print; tin in the cup.
Confirm: slug on sealed print without release vs with. If only the released slug fails, the can is the poison.
Fix: remake. Do not bake. Do not oil a food well to hide tack.
Layer lines under a heavy release become orange-peel chocolate. If the brand face is glossy, pay the $50 CAD for a smooth master.

Cans we would not put on a food master
We would not recommend hairspray as sealer or release.
We would not recommend a mystery aerosol on a chocolate print.
We would not recommend skipping the slug because the spray "is for silicone."
We would not recommend release as a substitute for draft on the print. Draft the master.
A tooling charge is not unrestricted ownership of the sealer brand on our traveler.
Worked example: SLA charm, hobby release, sticky well
Jewelry charm, SLA, buyer sprayed a craft release, poured 1:1 at home, sent a sticky cavity. Slug without spray passed after we sealed; slug with their can failed. Recast sealed, no release, sacrificial print. Prototype 3–7 business days after CAD lock. $50 CAD did not apply (STL was fine). Production MOQ 20 of that design. Related: jewelry resin.
Release on FDM vs SLA is not one SOP
FDM needs fill and seal for layer lines before any slip film. SLS/MJF needs powder out of serifs plus a seal or the release just rides dust into the rubber. Name the print family on the RFQ. A food SLA and a craft FDM do not share a spray. Jacket still if the tray loads; release will not fight sag of about 0.5–1.5 mm.
If the master is yours and must ship back, say so. We will slug a compatible release. If the master is ours to cut out of a glove, we would rather skip the can.
A food PO that arrives with a spray-can photo in the email is a stop. Name the can, or throw it out and seal. We would not guess a sealer from a Chinese SKU code on a bottle without a TDS. If you cannot name it, we model a $50 CAD master in a chemistry we already slug. That is faster than a sticky 24-up and a tasting-room story.
Draft still belongs on the print. Release will not save a 90-degree FDM stair that locks a 10A glove. Draft the master; do not oil the lock. See the draft page when that file is live. ISO 3302-1 M2 on the dump does not excuse a locked print.
Mix-up: anything that says mold release helps platinum
Many releases are for PU in a *finished* mold or for polyester on a table. Platinum against photopolymer is a picky face. The other mix-up is sealing and releasing in the same wet minute so neither film flashes off.
What to ask when you're buying a print-to-platinum job
- Print family (SLA/FDM/SLS) and wash/UV status?
- Keep the master, or sacrificial?
- Food dump vs craft?
- Permission to seal and slug?
- After CAD lock, 3–7 business days, then MOQ 20 / design?

Do I need mold release on a 3D print before platinum? Not by default. Seal and slug. Release only if you must keep the print and the slug still cures.
Is sealer the same as release? No. Sealer is a barrier for cure. Release is slip for peel. Some releases inhibit.
Can I use hairspray? We would not.
Will release hide SLA stair-steps? It often prints them in orange peel. Smooth CAD or a better print.
