An SLA print can be an RTV master after wash, UV, and a seal. How inhibition shows up, when the $50 CAD applies, and what to send before we pour platinum.

A 3D-printed part can be the master for a custom RTV mold after you wash it, fully UV post-cure it, and usually seal it. Straight off the printer it is a sticky, layered object that inhibits platinum and copies every stair-step into the cavity. At RUUIPON we will pour around a print we trust, or we will model a clean master for USD $50 when that CAD scope applies. Prototype is 3–7 business days after CAD lock — lock includes "this print is pour-ready," not "the STL left the laptop." Production is MOQ 20 pieces per design. Bao'an since 2018.

If you meant the 3D print *to be* the production mold, stop. The print is the pattern. The rubber is the tool. If you meant a 3D-printed *silicone part* from an LSR tool, that is not this shop — wydsilicone.com.
Does not apply when the master is already CNC metal, when you are printing a jacket/shell only, or when the resin is an unknown no-name bottle with no post-cure notes. We would not pour platinum food cavities against a mystery print and hope. Photos-only jobs without a print still go through from photos.
When a print is a master and when it is scrap
FDM, SLA/DLP, and sintered nylon are three different masters.
SLA/DLP copies fine logos if layer height is honest and the wash is complete. It is also the inhibition champion: leftover uncured resin and some photopolymer chemistries leave the platinum face tacky while the jacket back cures. That cavity is scrap for food.
FDM is a texture machine. Layer lines become chocolate or resin texture unless you sand, fill, and seal. Fine serifs die on the nozzle width.
Sintered nylon / MJF can be dimensionally useful and still dusty. Powder in a serif becomes a bubble nest.
We still run the RUUIPON Mold Structure Decision on the printed shape: flat back → open-back; undercuts that peel → glove; if they will not peel → split/plug/core; large wet casting → mother mold. Printing a one-piece undercut mascot does not force a one-piece rubber glove. Sequence around the master: how molds are made.

Inhibition: how it looks, how we confirm
Symptom: cavity face against the print is greasy or undercured; sprue and jacket back are fine.
Cause: sulfur-adjacent contamination, latex gloves on the print, tin residue from a previous craft pour, or SLA resin that was not fully washed/UV'd.
Confirm: press a clean nitrile-gloved finger on a hidden face after the scheduled cure. Tack on the print side only is inhibition, not "needs more hours in the box."
Fix: do not wash-and-hope a food cavity. Remake from a sealed or a different master. Barrier coats (a compatible sealer, not random hairspray as a personality test) belong *before* mix. Tell us the resin brand if you know it. We would not guess a sealer from a TikTok.
Platinum mix is 1:1 or 10:1. Tin is more forgiving of dirty prints and is still the wrong food start — we would not spec tin for food cavities just to survive a raw SLA.
Wash, UV, seal, then rubber
Shop order on a buyer-supplied print:
- Confirm scale (a printed 98% is a silent shrink stack on top of platinum 0.1–0.3%).
- Wash until the solvent comes off clean; no puddles in counters.
- Full UV post-cure per the printer's resin notes, including shadowed undercuts.
- Sand or fill only where you accepted the texture change.
- Barrier coat; cure the coat.
- Then it can enter our box, keys, A/B, vacuum, jacket path.
If you do not have a print — only an STL that still needs draft, a shut, or a logo depth — that is the $50 CAD. We model, you lock millimetres, we cut or print *our* master. A week of sculpture cleanup is not fifty dollars.
ISO 3302-1 M2 on the 2D is still a rubber class for the dump if you care. It does not make the SLA "precision." Design help: mold design service.

Common mix-up: raw STL as a pour-ready file
Buyers email an STL export of a figurine and write "3D printed master, start RTV." In the shop there is no shut face, no shrink policy, no seal, and often a 0.1 mm hairline that the printer cannot hold. We will not mix. Either you ship a finished, sealed print with a scale note, or we take the $50 CAD, rebuild a moldable master, and you sign lock. Paying tooling later still does not mean unrestricted ownership of that master — write archive rights.
Worked example (anonymized)
Grey SLA mascot, 70 mm, buyer-printed, intended as a chocolate cavity. First photo showed glossy wells and a sticky-looking build face. We asked for wash + UV notes; they had only "cured in sunlight on the windowsill." We declined to pour platinum on that print. $50 CAD to rebuild the mascot with 0.4 mm logo, draft on the closed arms (split, not a one-piece glove), lock, our sealed master, pour in the 3–7 business day window. First couverture witness released. MOQ 20 of that design. The windowsill print stayed a display model.
Food prints versus craft prints
A chocolate or gummy master has to survive platinum. That is the inhibition conversation. A PU figurine master can still inhibit, and a sticky cavity still ruins detail, but you are not also fighting a 177.2600 pack. Do not send one sealed SLA and ask us to pour a food tray and a resin glove as if the same print prep applied. Tell us the dump. If the print is hollow or has trapped solvent in a closed counter, open a drain or accept a new solid master — $50 CAD when we have to rebuild that. Mix stays 1:1 or 10:1; vacuum still happens; jacket still happens if the skin will sag.

We would not recommend reprinting a new master for every recast. Keep the sealed one.

FAQ
Can I use a 3D printed model as a silicone mold? You can use it as a *master* after wash, UV, and usually a seal. The silicone pour is still the mold.
Why did platinum stay sticky on my SLA? Inhibition. Uncured resin, some photopolymers, sulfur, latex, tin leftovers. Remake from a sealed master. More bake will not save a food face.
Do you always charge $50 if I already printed the master? No. $50 is when we still have to model. A pour-ready sealed print with locked mm skips that scope. A raw STL does not.
Will layer lines show in chocolate? Yes, if you did not sand and seal. Sign that texture or pay for a finished master.
Can I send a new print every time I reorder? You can. Size will drift. We would rather recast from the sealed master we archived. Tooling charge ≠ unrestricted ownership — say who keeps it.
