Rebuilding a Torn RTV Lip vs a Full Recast | RUUIPON

A lip is the peel edge: the rim you fold to start demold, the pour lip on an open-back, the flash land on a split. When it tears, dumps nick, flash walks, and operators start using tools that make it worse. A *craft* flange nick away from the cavity can sometimes take a named platinum adhesive. A torn food lip — chocolate serif rim, gummy sheet edge — we would not Sil-Poxy. Recast against the unsanded master. Building a new lip from caulk or a rolled worm of leftover RTV is how you print a ridge into the next bar.

Does not apply when the *dump* tore and the rubber is intact, when you meant a torn *key* (previous page), or when the lip is a plaster jacket edge. Don't grease a ragged food rim to "help it slide."

Where it tore tells you the fix

Pour lip nicked by a spatula. Operator tool. Recast if the nick prints. Change the spatula SOP. Food: no metal in the well.

Peel lip fatigued after many cycles. Rotation of spare skins. Recast from archive. A glued worm lasts a few dumps.

Lip torn on first open at a thin serif. Geometry. Fillet, shallower letter, or split. Glue does not add tear strength to a membrane.

Lip swollen/matte from PU or epoxy. Chemistry. Recast; retire from food.

Run Structure Decision if the tear started at a hook: powder and grease will not save the lip.

ISO 3302-1 M2 is not a lip-repair class.

Why a rolled RTV worm fails as a new lip

Leftover mixed platinum, thixed and stuck onto a torn rim, rarely knits to a dirty, powdered, or inhibited face. You get a flap. The flap peels off inside a chocolate bar or leaves a step on a PU coaster. Recast the whole skin so the lip is continuous millimetres, not a graft.

If CAD must thicken the lip, that is $50 when scope applies. Don't "just Shore 40A" a food tray to survive a metal spatula.

Peel sequence that saves lips

Start the peel at the designed lip, not at a serif. Support the tray so you aren't folding a loaded sheet through 180° on a 3 mm rim. Invert-dump gummy trays want a different motion than a figurine glove — don't copy one SOP onto the other. If operators need a hook tool, the lip is already too thin; CAD a finger tab ($50 when scope applies) rather than a metal pick.

Chemistry lips (PU/epoxy etch) feel swollen and look matte. Glue will not stick. Recast and split cabinets. A food lip that saw resin is retired.

Dummy storage: a dummy that hangs on a torn lip tears it further. Fix the lip (recast) before you store with a dummy. Ozone and UV still kill shelves; a perfect lip in a window still yellows if the tool is clear.

Rotation: two skins, one jacket. MOQ 20 is the pack, not a single hero tray you keep gluing.

Typical shop: platinum shrink about 0.1–0.3% after full cure of the recast; don't "stretch the glued worm to compensate." ISO 3302-1 M2 stays on the dump drawing.

Worked example (anonymized)

Gummy sheet, platinum ~25A, peel lip torn after a metal scraper. Buyer asked to glue. We recast, added a 3 mm fillet on the peel edge in CAD ($50), wrote no-metal on the traveler, MOQ 20. Dry well, no tin.

One procurement mix-up

Treating the lip as a consumable you rebuild weekly. If it lasts a week, the peel path is wrong. Tooling charge is not a glue subscription.

Scraper SOP we write on food travelers

No metal in the well. No grease to "help the scraper." No tin leftover blamed on the tear. Plastic or none. If pectin skins in the cavity, that is a set-clock page, not a lip-glue page. Recast the nicked sheet, wash the spare by hand, rest it cavity-up.

A chocolate bar pour lip that chips becomes a flash ridge in couverture. Recast. Don't flame the ridge. Don't freeze the tray to pop a stuck bar as a lip-saver — that's a different myth.

If CAD thickens only the peel edge and not the cavity volume, say so on the drawing so fill weight doesn't silently change. Outer-row gummies already run 3–6% heavy when a sheet sags; a rebuilt worm lip makes that worse.

Who owns the recast skin is still the PO. Charge ≠ unrestricted title to glue it in the field and still claim the first article.

Witness dump of the recast should show a continuous lip, no graft line, and a dry ungreased well on food SKUs.

FAQ

Can I rebuild a chocolate pour lip with food-safe silicone glue? We would not. Recast. The glue is a new article and a dirt trap.

The lip tore only on the outer row. Recast the whole sheet? Usually yes. Outer-row sag 0.5–1.5 mm plus a nick is still one skin. Jacket the next one.

Will 40A stop lip tears? It can fight a spatula and fight a gummy dump. Confirm cause. Geometry first.

Do spare lips exist as inserts? We recast skins. We don't sell a lip cartridge.

If I already glued it, can you still recast from that skin as the master? Don't. Use the unsanded original master. A glued lip copies a ridge.
