Molded keys are rubber bosses and sockets that find two RTV halves. Steel pins are hardware. On an RTV tool they belong in a rigid jacket — FRP or a printed shell — so the pin never touches the dump and never rusts into a chocolate serif. Driving a drill-blank through a 20A skin locates once and tears by the third open. Food cavities stay dry: no pin oil, no grease, no tin. If the SKU has no jacket, you don't get pins — you get filleted rubber keys or a redesigned shut.

Does not apply when you already have a steel HCR/LSR press tool (those pins are the press), when the mold is an open-back tray with no shut, or when a PC magnetic chocolate book uses factory hinges. Don't copy an injection-mold pin circle onto a glove.
Hardware versus rubber register
Molded keys (hemispheres, fences, unique pips) live in the rubber or in jacket pockets. Cheap, food-safe if the rubber is platinum, and they fail by tearing if they are too sharp in 10A–20A.
Jacket pins (dowels in FRP or a printed boss) take clamp and pot load. The pin hole is in the *mother*, not in the cavity. Bushings if the jacket will see hundreds of cycles. Keep the pin short of the dump.
Pins through the skin. We would not, especially on food. Rust, tear, lube film, 177.2600 problem.
Run Structure Decision: flat back → open-back (usually no pins). Else peel? If no → two-part / plug / core, and then choose keys vs jacket pins from clamp load, not from a hardware-store impulse.
Flash is the witness of a walking shut. Shallow rubber keys slide under hydrostatic head. Pins in a floppy glove without a jacket still walk because the rubber stretches around the steel. Stiffen the mother first.
ISO 3302-1 M2 is a drawing class on the dump, not a pin class.

When we actually quote pins
Vac-cast or pressure-cast splits with a rigid jacket. Large wet concrete gloves where a fence isn't enough. Production figurine tools that clamp the same way every shift. We would not quote pins on a 12-cavity chocolate bar. We would not grease pins "for food release."

A chocolate or gummy sheet almost never needs the middle row. A vac-cast figurine often needs the first two together. The third row is a recast waiting to happen. Don't borrow LSR leader-pin catalogs; those pins see steel, not 20A.
If you already drilled a food tray, retire it from food. Recast platinum, dry well, no tin. Tooling charge on the first skin is not a license to hardware-store the second.
Worked example (anonymized)
Two-part PU bust, platinum ~20A, buyer installed 4 mm steel pins through both skins. Third open tore three holes; rust stained a later dump. We recast skins without holes, built an FRP jacket with dowels that stop short of the cavity, unique rubber pip on the land. $50 CAD for the jacket pin layout. MOQ 20. Food never on this PO.
Recast the skin without re-drilling the mother
Once dowels live in the jacket, a cooked or torn skin recasts onto the same mother. Don't drill a second pin circle. Don't transfer holes from the scrap skin with a transfer punch "so they match." The new skin should be a smooth sock with rubber keys only. That is the point of putting hardware in the jacket. Food recasts stay platinum, dry, no tin, no pin oil from the last operator.
One procurement mix-up
"Registration" as a catalog of drill bits. LSR steel tools and RTV jackets don't share hardware. Tooling charge is not unrestricted right to drill the skin you paid for.

- Shut load: gravity, clamp, pot, or wet dump?
- Jacket material that can actually hold a dowel?
- Unique pip so 180° off is impossible?
- Food vs craft — pins even allowed?
- Who owns the jacket if we recast only the skin?

FAQ
Can stainless pins through a gummy tray be "food-grade hardware"? We would not. Holes tear, lube films the well, and 177.2600 did not include that hardware. Use tray carriers, not pins in the cavity.
Do jacket pins replace molded keys entirely? Usually you want both: pins for clamp, a unique pip so the jacket cannot close backwards.
My plaster mother ate the steel pins. Recast the skin? Usually recast or rebuild the *jacket* in FRP or print. The skin may still be good if the cavity wasn't holed.
Will harder Shore let pins live in the rubber? It delays the tear and still rusts into the dump. Move the pin to the jacket.
Is CAD required to add jacket dowels? USD $50 when we must model the jacket. A simple dowel add on an existing printed shell may be a drawing note, not a remodel of the cavity.
