Fix a Torn Silicone Mold: Don't Patch Food | RUUIPON

A torn RTV skin is either a recast or a craft patch. Sil-Poxy and similar platinum adhesives can close a *craft* tear on a non-food tool if the rip is in a flange or a jacket-side nick and the cavity face still copies. We would not patch a food-contact cavity with Sil-Poxy. Glue in a chocolate or gummy well is a new article you did not extract; it is also a flash ridge that becomes a dirt trap. Recast the skin against the unsanded master, same revision letter, same jacket keys. If the master is gone, you do not have a fix — you have a rebuild.

Does not apply when the *casting* tore and the rubber is intact, when you sliced the mold with a knife and want us to call it a material defect, or when the tear is a registration key you should have redesigned. Jewelry and concrete tears can be craft-patched in some cases; those dumps are still not food.

Craft patch versus recast — pick by where it tore

Flange or jacket-side nick, cavity face untouched, craft dump (resin, wax, plaster, concrete). A platinum adhesive (Sil-Poxy-type) on a clean, dry, de-oiled tear can hold a non-critical flange. Confirm: raking light on the *cavity* shows no ridge. Fix: clamp, cure per the adhesive TDS, coupon one dump. If the ridge prints, recast anyway.

Tear through a food logo well, a gummy ear, a chocolate serif. We would not patch. Recast. Do not "food-safe glue" a 177.2600 story back together. Do not dishwasher a glued well.

Tear at a thin serif or 1 mm web on first open. Geometry. Recast after CAD: fillet, shallower letter, split, or plug. Glue fills a knife-cut; it does not add tear strength to a membrane.

Tear after hundreds of dumps, lip gone. Fatigue. Recast from archive. Buy rotation if transit downtime hurts. A patch on a tired lip lasts a few dumps and then you are gluing again.

Sticky torn face. Inhibition or resin attack, not a clean rip. Adhesive will not stick to a greasy inhibited face. Remake the skin; fix the master.

Clean a craft tear with soap and water, rinse, dry. Do not solvent-soak platinum and then glue. Match platinum to platinum; tin residues inhibit. Clamp so the faces kiss without a hill.

The photo that would prove a recast is the unsanded master, the torn skin tagged scrap, and the new face on the same jacket keys. A white glue bead in a chocolate letter is the photo we refuse.

Common mix-up: glue is a recast and "food-safe silicone adhesive" blesses a chocolate well

Retail "food grade" on a tube is not 21 CFR 177.2600 extraction of *this* tray plus *this* bead. We would not patch food. The cousin mix-up is super-gluing a 10A lip (cyanoacrylate on platinum is a brittle joke) or filling a tear with more RTV without a platinum adhesive protocol — most "pour more in the crack" jobs delaminate. Another: sanding the master "to clean the tear pattern" and then asking for a recast of the original logo.

Worked example (anonymized)

A 16-cavity chocolate bar, platinum food path, lip tear at cavity 12 after a knife nick. Buyer asked us to Sil-Poxy overnight. We refused the patch, recast the skin on the archived CNC master, same jacket, same 177.2600 compound, no extra $50 because CAD did not move. Food first-wash SOP on the new skin. A resin figurine with a torn flange on the same week got a craft adhesive coupon and then a recast when the ridge printed on the cloak. Two different cabinets.

FAQ

Can Sil-Poxy fix a torn chocolate mold? We would not patch a food-contact cavity. Recast the skin. Adhesive in the well is not an extraction pack.

Can I fix a resin mold tear with more silicone? Uncured RTV poured into a crack usually delaminates. A named platinum adhesive on a craft flange can work; coupon it. Face tears still recast.

The logo serif keeps tearing after I glue it — now what? The web is too thin. CAD fillet or shallower letter, then recast. Glue does not add section.

Do I need MOQ 20 to recast one torn tray? Production of a locked design is MOQ 20 pieces per design. A single recast sample can sit in a proto conversation — ask us to line-item one skin versus a twenty-up reorder.

If I paid tooling, must you patch forever? No. Archive duration and ownership are PO terms. A tooling charge is not unrestricted repair, and food wells still do not get glue.

What a patch actually does to the next dump

Even a "successful" craft glue line is a hardness step. Resin flash will sit there. Concrete paste will stain the bead. Wax will hang. If you must coupon a flange patch, dump once, inspect, and decide recast before you schedule a week of production. Do not mix 1:1 platinum as if it were the adhesive — use the named platinum glue on a craft nick, or recast.

ISO 3302-1 M2 on the drawing does not glue a lip. Loaded sag of 0.5–1.5 mm after a torn jacket-side is a jacket spare, not Sil-Poxy.
